Of course, we also devote our complete attention to anyone who wants to have lots of fun with his bike in daily situations. Our series models incorporate the experience of 20 years of bike-development, used in conjunction with highly valuable feedback from our top athletes. This feedback helps us develop technologically mature, high-value, lightweight and comfortable racing bikes that satisfy all needs. We care for the specifics, no matter how minor they may be. Ergonomic cockpits, lightweight components, a more flexible seat post to allow for more comfort or even half a tenth of an inch less flex at the bottom bracket under full stress will all contribute to the riding experience. Which is exactly what we put our heart and soul into. When combined with our passion and experience, this allows for wonderful synergy. 6 STEVenS AHEAD SINCE 91 FROm the Past into the FUTURE. If your roots lie in racing, you adopt a simple philosophy: Push and drive until you REACh the finish in winning position. We started out in At the first Eurobike show, our first self-made frames saw the light. In that same year, we developed our first carbon MTBs and racing bikes. STEVENS was founded by Werner and Wolfgang von Hacht, two brothers who are long time enthusiasts about the sport of cycling. This was the birth of a new German brand that since then has established excellent reputation, in Germany as well as internationally. The bikes made in Hamburg are sold in 24 countries, and there are 500 authorized STEVENS retailers just in Germany. Over the last years, retailers have elected the STEVENS bikes three times as best in brand 6

7 attractiveness, and in 2010 we were even named best bike vendor of all brands (SAZ). Naturally, we re quite proud of these awards. Sometimes we still reminisce about the ground-breaking reviews of our mountain bikes and which achieved best ratings in renowned bike magazines or the firstplace of our Italian racing frame STEVENS Star, back in 95 and 96. Since then, our bikes have earned numerous decorations. The STEVENS Jazz, which won the Stiftung Warentest test in 2004, lay ground to our current success in the trekking and city segments. The crowning award might have been the Milestone of the year 2009, which the STEVENS Xenith earned last year. We also take great pride in the athletes we support: They repay our support with championship titles and highly valuable feedback about our bikes. Among them are German champions, European champions, World champions and Olympic medalists, together representing STEVENS in almost any kind of bike racing: road racing, triathlons, cyclocross, time trials and mountain bike racing, only to name a few. True professionals like Jens Schwedler, Mike Kluge, Hanka Kupfernagel, Marianne Vos, Daniel Unger, Lisa Norden, Ralf Eggert, Philipp Walsleben, Niels Albert, Katie Compton, Amber Neben and Arnaud Jouffroy direct our attention to aspects that may enhance the performance of STEVENS bikes even further. Belgian champion Sanne Cant s conclusion is: STEVENS The best bike I ever had. Our developers and engineers strive to innovate each and every year, impacting the bike scene and enhancing your daily cycling experience. Because we know further improvement and enhancements are always possible. Naturally, the achievements of the last 20 years make us feel honored. 9 In the STEVENS research and development department, our engineers and technicians find ideal conditions. The laboratory is a dream-come-true for any engineer obsessed with bike-development. It features modern high-performance computers, the latest software and state-of-the-art analogue test benches. The test range right beyond our front doors needs a mention, too. In this office ideas and suggestions are applied to the STEVENS bikes. If one of our top athletes suggests an improvement to his bike, we review and test it thoroughly. If it works, we ll make good use of it. Many innovations for our Cyclocross and road bikes have been implemented this way and we will be continuing to do so. Of course, our development department also runs its own tests, independent of the opinion of racing professionals: for instance, the stiffness of the bottom bracket and head set of our frames is measured, and forks need to prove how comfortable and stiff they are. It is here that suspension components get finetuned for the STEVENS bikes. All our theoretical creations are put to the acid test before they are released to the streets as technically mature STEVENS bikes. Should we find a single flaw no matter how small the process of development, construction, building and testing is repeated once more, until every single test is passed and all members of the development team are satisfied. And our developers aren t easily satisfied: a maximum of esthetic functionality needs to be attained. By the way, our engineers prefer to test outside on the actual road or on the trails. 10 Lightweight Construction Competence Landmarks of our history meilenstein AWARD 2009 The Meilenstein, awarded by the German magazine Trekkingbike, is considered the Academy Award of the cycling world. In 2009, we won it with our trekking bike Xenith. Its spectacular weight of only 9.8 kg lower than that of any other series bike is probably the most obvious reason this absolutely high-value and fully loaded bike took the prize. Of course we celebrated this properly. The next morning we started the process of trying to improve the Xenith even further. That s just how we are.

12 Power on Demand Thanks to STEVENS collaboration with the BionX engineers, the design of the new E-Randonneur impresses with a most harmonic integration of the battery into the innovative frame. It sits particularly low at the bottom tube, which makes for almost perfect weight distribution and resulting in lively handling and riding dynamics. Design meets Technology Convenient details like the ergonomic handle, the integrated lock and the sliderguiding on the seat tube make it easy and straightforward to change the battery after charging. The futuristic design makes good use of every gram and reduces the system to the essential: a delight of electric mobility.

13 Pioneer work Prestigious brand, trendsetter, pioneer the Canadian company BionX is a key player in the Pedelec market. BionX has many years of experience in the development of sportive rear motor systems, and is considered the epitome of agile, lively and powerful bicycles. Thus, they are a perfect partner for STEVENS. BionX technology sl: super lightweight. This is true for the frame, which is designed following the principles of lightweight construction, and also for the motor. Both frame variants of the Randonneur SL are equipped with the new and super lightweight BionX 250ht SL motor and thus offer a maximum of efficient riding dynamics and range. Strong Acceleration and Energy Recovery The BionX 250 HT motor can be run in 4 different support moduses. Level 1 with 35%, level 2 and 3 with 75% and even 150% of the momentum the rider generates, and the turbo-level 4 that supports with 300% of the rider s power. Climbing a mountain or accelerating at a traffic light with level 4 support reminds you of driving a sports car! 14 interview: Think ahead ThomAS Harter and OLIVER ROEmER from SEED develop innovative products. For STEVENS, they dealt with the topic of ELECTRIC mobility. They took the time to ANSWER the most important questions REgARDINg the STEVENS Pedelec series. You have a lot of experience with innovative MTBs and road bikes, especially in combination with carbon. Why did the topic of Pedelecs and trekking bikes appeal to you? Oliver: Although the work on road and mountain bikes never ceases to pose new challenges, these naturally always regard weight, aerodynamics, suspension-anything that might make an athlete faster. The topic of trekking and e-bikes respectively Pedelecs needs a completely different approach, because the every-day use suitability of the bicycle is the most important aspect, and thus poses completely different challenges. Bicycles for every-day use are indeed used differently and the integration of many more components like light systems, mud guards, racks or, as in our case, electric auxiliary motors significantly raises the complexity. The collaboration with STEVENS offered great opportunities for SEED to make a really innovative step and approach the topic of e-bikes from a different point of view than others did, technologically as well as esthetically. Did the design or the function come first during the development of the E-Randonneur? Oliver: During the development of the E-Randonneur, we gave priority to the classic principle form follows function. After it was decided to use a rear motor, the main concern was to make sure that the Pedelec would offer the same sportive handling that other Stevens bicycles exhibit. In collaboration with our design team we accepted the challenge of riding dynamics and style, because we didn t want to make concessions in any area. This way we managed to implement an outstanding integration with a low center of gravity that perfectly represents the STEVENS brand. Why use the BionX motor? Thomas: The BionX motor has many advantages that match STEVENS interests well. Not only does it allow for a nearly completely free choice of drivetrains, it s also the most sportive motor available on the market, and the weight reduction of 900 g that s expected from the new generation of BionX motors make this model a great match for a sportive Pedelec. Additionally, BionX has a lot of experience in this segment, which is important because the reliability of the motor is crucial, especially for the rider of a Pedelec, with the motor greatly increasing the range. Last but not least aspects like energy recovery as well as the easy and intuitive user interface tipped the scale in favor of the BionX motor. What s new on the E-Randonneur? Thomas: The frame and the battery of the E-Randonneur are redesigned from scratch. Because of the complete integration of the battery cover into the frame we developed a forging using FEM technology that combines a low center of gravity, a perfect weight/stiffness ratio and easy handling of the battery like probably no other Pedelec on the market. Through the use of an optimized battery, the capacity could be raised by 25%. In addition to these hard facts it s one other very important aspect that counts: its great look represents riding pleasure. 14

18 Bosch technology Motor, Made in Germany Bosch a new player on the Pedelec motor market. The world-famous group from Stuttgart collaborated with STEVENS to develop an integrated system that features a middle motor, a multi sensor control and optimal battery technology. The rider can chose one of three support modes in several riding programs. In level 1, 50% of the momentum will be created by the motor, while level 2 and 3 will push with 100% and 200% of the rider s input. The rider s current power is measured with a momentum sensor in the bottom bracket. Additionally, the Bosch system will permanently determine the pedal frequency and the velocity to ensure a perfect adjustment of the motor s power. Let things Run their Course The Bosch motor is considered one of the most efficient and smooth machines on the market. With optimal motor speed its power emerges gently and economically. More like an enduring marathon power source than an accelerating rocket, the Bosch ebike system excels on every-day bicycles and low stepover-height Forma bikes. Bosch is using the latest battery-cells that offer long life-cycles, high load cycle counts and efficiency to the max. Welcome to the future. Range determination 18 Rather logical: The more the rider pedals himself, the higher is the range of the Pedelec. By the way, there doesn t exist a standardized way to measure the range of Pedelecs yet. The ranges commonly reached strongly depend on the terrain and the effort of the rider. The more efficient and more intelligent you use the motor power, the higher the ranges you can achieve as with all other means of transportation

OUR SOVEREIgn, AVANTgARDE, SupERFLyer, EspRIT and all Pedelec models are all equipped with the new, INNOVATIVE daytime running light. stevens and Busch & Müller share the desire to bring innovation to series models. A few years ago, this common characteristic changed into cooperation. Guido Müller, junior director, answered our questions. STEVENS collaborates with Busch & Müller to create innovative products. In the past we have developed the integrated suspension fork mount. We then helped to create the rear stripe light, and now in 2011 many STEVENS bicycles are equipped with the daylight running light. You may wonder what the advantages of this new technology are? Currently most cyclists ride early mornings or throughout the day without light. The new LICHT24 protects the rider further with highly visible LEDs that do not point downwards onto the road like the usual headlights, but slightly upwards to signal somebody is coming to oncoming traffic. In particular, the LEDs are at the brightest level during the day, while in the dark the main headlight operates with full brightness to illuminate the road. In 2011 STEVENS celebrates its 20 year anniversary. What have been the key lighting technology milestones thorughout these last 20 years? STEVENS has already been supporting the development for 15 years. It s striking that STEVENS always has been very open to innovations. Even back in their first year STEVENS did use the new LED 4Dlite parking light. When the adequate technology to integrate it into the rack was released in 1998, STEVENS switched to the D-Toplight. The introduction of LEDs in headlights was another milestone. We released the first of these in Back then, a prototype was introduced by the German magazine aktivradfahren under the name of The blue wonder on a STEVENS Sovereign. Shortly after that everyone was talking about the Sovereign and the LED technology. From our perspective, the high quality of the light components represents STE- VENS effort to innovate. If you buy a STEVENS bike, you can be sure that it s a technically absolutely sophisticated product. The motor and the battery of the Pedelec STEVENS E-Randonneur provide the power for the lights. How does that work? You control the lights with the normal display at the handlebar. The rider can select one of Always On, Off and Automatic. The Always On mode provides the best safety, because the lights are always on: during the day in daytime running light mode, in the dark the headlight automatically switches to night mode. The Automatic mode switches the lights on in the dark and off when its bright. Busch & Müller is considered the pioneer in modern light technology. It is producing in Sauerland, Germany, while competitors moved their production facilities to Asia. What s your opinion on Germany as a business location? STEVENS assembles all trekking bikes in Germany, and we have very strong connections to our geographical surroundings, too. We know that we can absolutely rely on our 150 employees.
