Cold mounting systems are particularly useful for delicate specimens that will not withstand the heat and pressure from a Hot Mounting press, and are also a good way of producing high volumes of mounted samples since 1 mix can produce many samples. 8 K EMET FIXING SYSTEMS Abrasive papers or polishing pads type Kemet Fixing Systems Kemet have a variety of mounting methods suitable for all types of grinding and polishing consumables. Kemtak KMS Disc Magnetic Disc Paper Ring Non- Adhesive Adhesive - Magnetic Non-adhesive grinding papers: Non adhesive papers can be used with a paper holding ring. This clamps the papers in place, and allows for easy and fast changing. Paper rings are available to suit 200, 250, and 300mm diameter platens. Paper Ring Ø 200mm Ø 250mm Ø 300mm Self-adhesive Grinding and Polishing Consumables: Self-adhesive consumables can be used in 3 different ways. Option 1: The self adhesive discs can be fixed directly to the platen. Option 2: The Kemtak disc is used with Bramet self-adhesive grinding papers. It can be mounted onto the machine platen, or onto a KMS disc if is being used with a magnetic platen. The plastic barrier film on the Bramet disc grips the Kemtak non-skid surface so that the adhesive is not used. This makes it faster and cleaner when changing from one grit size to another. (Fig. 1). The machine platen is fitted with a magnetic disc. This allows easy change over from one consumable to another. Multiple KMS discs are needed to use this method in the most productive way. (Fig. 2). 16 K EMET POLISHING CLOTHS Chemo-textile Cloths. PSU-M: Medium / Hard chemo-textile cloth are for smoothing and polishing operations. Commonly used with Kemet Diamond Compound 14 micron and finer. Kemet Chemo-textile Cloths Manufactured to the highest standards with accurately controlled uniform thickness. Self-adhesive, and available in medium (PSU-M) and extra hard (PAD-K) formats. 23 M ACHINES FOR SPECTRAL ANALYSIS Spectral 250 Specification The Spectral 250 is a table-top portable surface grinder for the preparation of steel samples for Spectroscopy. A compact design with vibration free operation makes it a practical instrument to work with. Low noise and dust generation levels as well as standard outlet for dust exhauster are additional advantages. The 250 mm dia Drive Plate is dynamically balanced for smooth running. As grinding discs are held on the plates by vacuum they do not need to be self adhesive. 40 to 120 grit discs can usually be used to obtain the desired surface quality. The Spectral 250 is equipped with an electronic brake system which brings the motor to a quick full stop in seconds. Spectral 350 Specification The Spectral 350 Dual Disc grinder is used to achieve excellent precision flat surfaces on iron and steel specimens for Spectroscopic Analysis. The robust and vibration-free construction has been designed for continuous operation at high sample throughput. The Spectral 350 has 2 independently driven 350mm dia plates. These are dynamically balanced for smooth running. Speeds can be set at 1400 or 2800 rpm so coarse and fine grinding can be done on the same machine. Abrasive discs are fixed to the plates by vacuum they do not need to be self adhesive. They are easy to replace and the full width of the disc can be used. A strong Aspiration Device (Blower) unit is available as an accessory with easily replaceable filter. This creates a dust free working environment. Both plates are covered half way by a lid which allows grinding in just one area for operator safety and comfort. The Spectral 350 is also equipped with a breaking device which brings the plates to a rapid stop. The details below will help to determine the most suitable system for your application: Step 1 Impregnate porous samples using the Vacumet, or mount samples directly onto glass slides using the KEPT resin. Step 2 Use the Geoform to first section the mounted sample, and then grind to the required thickness. Step 3 For polishing up to 3 specimens, use the Forcipol 300-1V with the Forcimat TS head. 25 C UT-OFF, GRINDING & POLISHING MACHINES Geoform Thin Section Cutting and Grinding Machine Specification The Geoform is a precision thin sectioning machine for mineralogy, combining cutting and grinding functions. With the cutting module, using Diamond or CBN wheels up to 200mm diameter, the specimen is mounted on the holder by way of a vacuum and sectioned to a thickness of approx 0.5 micron. Water cooling avoids deformation. The grinding module is designed for precision grinding. A universal vacuum holder accepts different sizes of glass slides by changing the location pins. A vacuum pump delivered as standard holds the glass slide fixed on the holder during the grinding process. A built-in digital micrometer ensures high precision and the specimen is ground with an accuracy of microns. Kemtech 15 Geological Lapping Machine The Kemtech 15 Geological lapping machine is able to accurately lap thin sections mounted on glass slides down to 30 microns. Silicon carbide can easily be applied to the cast iron serrated lapping plate for lapping. Polishing of thin sections can be achieved using a polishing pad. 26 M ACHINES FOR THIN SECTIONS Kemet 300LVAC Polishing Machine The Kemet 300LVAC special purpose-polishing machine is designed to work alongside the Kemtech 15 Geological lapping machine for polishing geological mounted samples. The basic machine has a 300mm diameter polishing plate. All drive elements are mounted on a heavy-duty aluminium alloy casting, giving vibration free operation and silent running. Water inlets with control valve are standard features. The control panel has a process timer, variable speed control and forward / reverse control switch and its own vacuum pump and connectors to suit Kemet vacuum jigs (not supplied with the machine). Kemet Vacuum Jigs The KEMET VACUUM JIG is a precision workholding and sizing fi xture for use with KEMET and other Flat Lapping Machines. The Jig is suitable for accurately sizing Geological thin sections, wafers, crystals and any precision parts where parallelism and precision fi nish are required. A range of face plates are available making the Jig suitable for holding all popular Glass Slide sizes. Special holding profi les can be supplied to accommodate wafers crystals and precision parts. Any components and specimens can be held which can be located inside a diameter of 110mm and are under 6mm in thickness. Special versions for larger sizes are available on application. 27 P ERISTATIC DOSING SYSTEMS AkuDisp Peristaltic Dispenser The AkuDisp is a peristaltic dispenser designed to work with Forcipol and Kemet lapping machines. It incorporates a stirrer and has programmable timer which is preset with 10 second time intervals and will pump for 2 seconds. A separate purge button will return any solution in the pipework and spray head to the receptacle. The AkuDisp can be programmed to pump slurries for specifi c durations and frequencies enabling metered dispensing. This allows a user to accurately control consumable usage. When integrated onto a Kemet/Metkon machine, the AkuDisp will start and stop with the host machine timer. This means an operator can leave a machine to concentrate on other tasks, safe in the knowledge that the AkuDisp will switch off unattended. The AkuDisp is easily serviceable, with all rotating parts fi tted to the exterior.
