1 Introduction A summary listing of electoral registers for the East Sussex area from 1832 to date. Parishes: to discover which constituency a parish was in, consult the parish index; this also tells you which polling district(s) a parish was in (or which polling districts it was divided into). This is important, because, except in very modern registers the arrangement within a given constituency was usually alphabetically by polling district and not parish. Parishes may also be divided into wards which are not listed in this guide. The parishes shown here are civil parishes, which in later years may well have different boundaries from their ecclesiastical counterparts. Dates: where two years are shown, the first year is that of the qualifying date for registration, the second (in brackets) is that in which the year of validity of the register begins. So from 1974 the qualifying date is 10 October; but the register is marked 1975, and is valid for one year from 16 February Borough constituencies: prior to 1915 certain places were in borough constituencies. Voters from these areas may also have been eligible to vote in the county divisions, though the relevant lists are not identical because the basis of the franchise was different. Where no borough register is available, therefore, (or even where it is) consult (also) the register for the appropriate county division. This advice does not apply to post-1918 borough constituencies. Local elections: at certain periods the registers were also used for local government elections (for which wards are especially relevant, and for which different electoral divisions applied: details are not given here). Poll books: before the Reform Act 1832 electoral registers were not maintained. However, printed poll books, recording the names of the electors and the candidates for whom they voted, were often published. County 1705 (Sussex Record Society 4), 1710 (DAN ), 1734 (ASH 3225; ACC 560/11), 1774 (DAN 2190; FRE 733), 1820 (SHR 326); East Sussex (AMS 6216); Lewes Borough , 1741, 1768, 1774, 1780, 1790, 1796, 1802, 1812, 1816, 1818, 1826, 1830, 1835, 1837, 1841, 1847, 1859, 1865, 1868 (LEW 5/3/1-30; R/L 12/11; ACC 8439/4/1); Rye Borough (search room library); Seaford Borough , 1786, 1790, 1794, 1796, 1806, 1807 (SEA 438, 458, 460, 467, 474, 478, 480).
