1 SMTP PROXY SERVER INSTALLATION FOR HP QUICKPAGE INTRODUCTION To ensure accurate billing, the HP QuickPage program requires collection of the metered information from the printers and multifunction products (MFPs) under contract. HP AutoSend, a standard feature in the device firmware on many workgroup HP LaserJet printers/mfps, can be used to provide this capability. HP AutoSend requires a suitable SMTP server to send the metered data to a given address. If the SMTP server is not available, SMTP Proxy server can be installed. This document provides a step-by-step guide to install SMTP Proxy server. This SMTP Proxy Server only accepts s sent by the printer and then forwards it via HTTP/HTTPS to the InCommand web -portal. The data contains only the metering information for billing purposes and do not include the data that is printed. INSTALLATION STEPS System Requirements 1. Hardware: Non-dedicated but highly available PC server or desktop. It would be preferable to choose a system that is available 24/7. 2. Operating System: Windows XP, Windows 2003 server, Windows Vista 3. Software:.NET Framework 2.0 (This comes by default with Windows XP SP3, Windows 2003 server, Windows Vista. In older systems, the installer will direct to the web page from where.net framework can be downloaded and installed). 4. Connectivity: The system must be connected to internet directly or through proxy (One must be able to browse internet pages using Internet Explorer). Also the system must be on the same LAN as the printers. 5. Hostname/IP: It would be best to choose a system with an assigned hostname and use it instead of the IP of the system. If there is no hostname or if hostname does not work with the printer, IP address can be used. It would be preferable to use a system that retains the IP after restart. Steps: 1. Launch a browser (Internet Explorer 6.0 or greater) and connect to Select a country.

2 2. Click on Support Tools link. 3. Click on SMTP Proxy Server executable.

3 4. Click on the Install button and launch the installer. The installer application is downloaded and launched. Choose the language. 5. Depending on the system settings, the installer prompts for permission to download and install.net 2.0 framework, if required. Select Yes. (If the system already has.net 2.0 framework installed, the.net 2.0 framework installation will be automatically skipped. ) 6. This starts the installation 6. Click Next to continue.

4 7. Change the Folder if must provide a new application folder to install the application. Leave the choice of Everyone as is. Click Next to move on. 8. Click on Install to continue.

5 9. A message box is shown that indicates that Port 25 is enabled to be reached by other systems in the network (for printers in the network to use this service). Click OK 10. After the installation is complete, the status is shown. Click on Finish.

6 11. The service manager application is started automatically. Depending on the network connections available appropriate choices are shown. a) System (PC / Server) connected to a single network (mostly will have only one IP Address. In some cases there could be multiple IP Addresses). Click Start Service. b) System (PC / Server) connected to multiple networks (usually internet and Local Network). Select the hostnames in which this service should be made available. Typically the network in which the printers would be connected (your local network). Ensure the selected items are ticked as shown below. Click Start Service. 12. Please verify the status of the server and if the system is connected to the internet. Please note down the hostname and use it as the SMTP gateway server in the server configuration of the printer.

7 13. Click on Change network selection if the selected network needs to be changed and if new choices have to be made. Note: - This manager application can be found in your programs menu. Steps to launch the application: a) Click Start b) Click All Programs c) Click HP SMTP Proxy Server d) Click SMTP Proxy Server Monitor

8 FAQ The status of the SMTP Proxy service is shown as Stopped. What should be done? Launch the monitor application: Start All programs HP SMTP Proxy Server SMTP Proxy Server Monitor. Click the Start link next to it and try starting the service. If it can t be started, try restarting the system. How do I verify if the printer is posting the information through this SMTP Service to the server successfully? Launch the application as shown above. Click on Service Info tab. The total requests received from the printers, number of times the information was successfully posted to the InCommand web portal server and status of the last posting attempt are shown. This information could be used to know the status of the service and/or for troubleshooting. The status of the Internet Connectivity is shown as Not connected in the SMTP Proxy Server Monitor. What should be done? Ensure the proxy settings are provided in Internet Explorer in that system and you are able to launch the site Then, refresh the status screen by clicking on the Refresh button.

9 The status of the SMTP Proxy service is shown as Running and connected to internet. But the AutoSend Test in the printer web page does not work an error is reported. What could be the problem? Please check if any additional firewall is configured to block any incoming requests. If so, please enable port 25 to be reached from the systems in the LAN. This is required for the printer to push the data into the SMTP Proxy server. Note: - This installation automatically enables if default Windows firewall is used. The IP of the SMTP Proxy has changed. What should be done? It is encouraged to use the hostname instead of the IP of the system. If there is no hostname or if hostname does not work with the printer, IP address can be used. It would be preferable to use a system that retains the IP after restart. If that cannot be done, the SMTP gateway server configuration in all printers should be updated with the new IP whenever there is a change Hewlett-Packard Development Company, L.P.
