1 Normal Operating Procedures 1 Pool Information 1.1 Address: High Street, Abbots Bromley, WS15 3BW. 1.2 Telephone: Saundra Slater ext Structure of Pool 2.1 There is one dropped-level pool with hand-rails. 2.2 Access from the changing rooms appears at the shallow end. 2.3 No emergency EXITS are marked on the poolside. 2.4 The length is metres. 2.5 The width is metres. 2.6 The shallow water is 1.15 metre with a steep slope to 2.67 metres at the deep end. 3 Potential Risk Areas 3.1 Diving is only allowed under the supervision of the Swimming Teacher. 3.2 For safety reasons, it has become necessary to ask all accompanying teachers to keep their class in the changing rooms until the swimming instructor invites them onto the poolside. 4 Visiting Teachers 4.1 Are asked to bring to each swimming lesson: a) A register, including the pupils important medical details b) Suitable footwear for poolside duties c) A whistle d) Glasses (if appropriate) e) Writing equipment
2 Normal Operating Procedures 4.2 Visiting teachers are asked to familiarise themselves not only with the Safety Issues on Page 4 and 5 of the Motivational Award Scheme Staff Handbook but also with the Emergency Procedure in place at the Pool (see Emergency Action Plan). Children should be warned of the potential danger to their ears of diving into water deeper than 1.5 metres. 5 First Aid 5.1 The First Aid Kit is located in the office adjacent to poolside. 5.2 The telephone is located in a small room on the poolside. 5.3 The emergency number is Training 6.1 All Swimming Instructors appointed to undertake the Staffordshire Schools Swimming programme, have at least a current RLSS National Rescue Award for Swimming Teachers and Coaches (NRASTC). This is the minimum national recommendation. 6.2 All pupils and visiting teachers attending swimming lessons under our scheme, will be taught the Emergency Procedure (see Emergency Action Plan document) unique to the pool. There will be at least one practice during each course of ten weeks. 6.3 This document was last reviewed in November 2009.
3 Emergency Action Plan 1 Pool Information 1.1 Address: High Street, Abbots Bromley, WS15 3BW. 1.2 Telephone: Saundra Slater ext Emergency Action Plan for a Water Emergency Whistle Blow Action 1 short blast Attracts attention of pupil 3 short blasts Indicates emergency action One long continuous blast Clears the pool 2.1 The pupils leave the water and line up in twos at the shallow end by the fire door (3 big patio doors) and await further instructions. The Swimming Teacher deals with the emergency. For a serious emergency, the Class Teacher head counts and evacuates the pupils to one or both changing rooms. If further help or an ambulance is required the telephone is in the small room on the poolside. The numbers are: Medical Centre Extension 427 School Office Extension 435 Emergency 999 using the outgoing call button on the telephone. 3 Emergency Action Plan for a Non Water Emergency 3.1 Any emergency in the changing rooms will be dealt with by the class teachers and helpers. The Swimming Teacher should be informed if it is a serious emergency. 4 Emergency Action Plan for the Fire Alarm and the Assembly Point Location 4.1 There are two fire alarms, one situated on the poolside closest to the emergency exits, overlooking the grassed area, the other in the main entrance of the pool building Poolside On being informed or suspecting a fire, give one long continuous blast of the whistle. The pupils immediately leave the water and line up at the emergency exit where the Class Teacher head counts and, on instruction, evacuates the pool building to the assembly point.

The pupils have to walk about 300 metres up the drive, around the pool building to the pool entrance. 2.2 Inside the pool building foyer the pupils remove their footwear before entering the changing rooms. 2.3 Both changing rooms are to the right on entering the foyer. 3 Changing Rooms 3.1 Both have only bench areas. 3.2 All pupils to wear swimming hats. 3.3 All pupils to shower before entering the poolside for lessons. 4 Poolside 4.1 Pupils wait at the changing room exit for the poolside until called through by the Swimming Teacher. 4.2 Pupils go straight to their groups. 4.3 At the end of the lesson pupils line up before leaving the poolside. 5 Non Participants 5.1 Pupils not swimming enter the poolside at the same time as the other pupils.
6 Child Protection Advice 5.2 They sit on benches located around the pool. 6 Spectator Balcony Area 6.1 This is not used during school swimming lessons 7 Pool Visibility 7.1 The pool is visible from: patio windows / emergency doors along the width at the shallow end (from outside the building along the drive) windows along the right side of pool shallow to deep (which are gardens) Windows left side, middle to deep (school buildings). 8 Concern 8.1 Pool building entrance door is left unlocked after the first school enters. 8.2 Pupils are always supervised in both changing rooms but personal belongings are left unattended during swimming lesson. 8.3 The school drive and grounds, which lead from the main road, are not secure and unauthorized persons could enter.
