1 BMP Racing Cams Single Cam Engines BMP performance cams are manufactured from new O.E.M. or Schrick cam billets. We do not sell or recommend reground performance cams. The profiles listed are our most popular for street and some track applications. All grinds including full racing applications are shown on the BMP web site. Milder grinds are designed to work well with original carburetor or fuel injection systems. Lower duration cams offer better mid-range performance, and will work with air conditioning. For optimum performance, software modifications are recommended. More aggressive grinds require more fuel and/or custom software programming. These high duration cams afford excellent top-end performance, with marginal lower-end performance. Idle speeds are typically at 1000 R.P.M. These profiles are recommended for track use only. When installing a new cam it is imperative that you also install new rocker arms, and new rocker shafts if needed. Cams with long duration and increased lift may require additional piston-to-valve clearance. (3) steel retainers and hardened keepers included Performance Cam Tech Tip: Select the correct cam for your application. High duration cams are very impressive at the upper R.P.M. ranges. However these same cams offer little improvement at idle or low R.P.M. Vehicles with automatic transmissions will show little improvement since the transmissions will normally shift to the next gear before the engine reaches the power band. For higher torque select a low duration cam with higher lift. For more high R.P.M. horsepower select a high duration cam. For street sport applications we recommend the cams, generally speaking, with a duration of less than 290. For track only applications we recommend the cams with greater than 290. Never use old or worn lifters on a new cam. And make sure the oilers are clean and free of debris. Heat Treated Valve Keepers With added spring pressure and R.P.M. levels the factory valve keepers are operating at their maximum stress level. To reduce the chance of failure we now offer replacement keepers that are heat treated. This is truly cheap insurance for an expensive engine. Units sold separately. Each valve requires 2 keepers. The eccentrics listed below are exact replacements for the original units, except that they are.060 larger in diameter. Will fit all single overhead cam 4 and 6 cylinder engines. Sold individually. 2 BMP Racing Cams Twin Cam Engines The BMP design performance cams are ground on high quality new O.E.M. or Schrick cam billets. We offer a large variety of grinds for each vehicle model and engine type. The milder grinds are the best choice for mid-range performance improvements. More radical profiles are recommended for track applications only. To optimize any performance cam installation, we recommend software modifications. The more radical grinds will typically Idle at 1000 R.P.M. Since the hydraulic lifters operate in direct contact with the camshaft we always recommend new lifters. For the milder street durations cams, new O.E. springs are usable. For constant high R.P.M. and added safety we recommend purchasing a high performance spring kit. The more radical cams may require additional valve to piston clearance. Springs require# $ Adjustable Cam Sprockets M3, M5, M6 Exhaust Cam Gear Rocker Arm Retainers All stock BMW engines have only one choice for cam timing. This choice is limited to alignment of a single dowel pin and bolt pattern, which dictates the exact timing of the cam. In a performance or racing application, moving the cam timing only a few degrees can improve mid-range torque or maximize top end horsepower. In high R.P.M. situations these springs permit the rocker to move laterally. Rocker arm failure is the result. Once the rocker leaves the valve stem contact area the rocker will bind against the retainer resulting in broken rocker arms. The BMP retainers will stop high R.P.M. rocker arm movement. 3 BMP design Underdrive Pulley Sets What is Underdriving? ENGINE PERFORMANCE The concept is simple. Each driven external engine accessory (alternator, water & powersteering pump, A/C compressor), draws a certain amount of horse power. Add this load to the rotating mass (or weight) of each accessory s moving components, and you can expect to loose upwards of 10% of the engine s gross horse power. By increasing the pulley diameter of the driven components we reduce the drive ratio of those components, consequently reducing the load required to drive them. This is similar in concept to riding a bicycle in low gear versus high gear. In Low, pedaling is much easier and acceleration is faster. High gear requires more of your power, and acceleration is slow. Our underdrive pulley concept essentially transfers some of the available engine power output from the driven external accessories to the flywheel-end of the crankshaft. This increases the power propelling the car, without sacrifice to the accessories. The reduced ratio also slows the accessory speed, which at race track R.P.M. reduces the wear to each component. For vehicles with high-amp stereo requirements, we offer the audiophile series which uses a standard-size alternator pulley to maintain maximum alternator output. All BMP underdrive pulley sets are manufactured from lightweight 6061-T6 billet aluminum, CNC machined to ±.001 tolerance, ensuring the best strength, balance, and fitment. Final coating is hard-anodized for additional protection. Each pulley utilizes lightening holes to reduce weight yielding the most horsepower gains. Typical gains are +12 HP and +8 lb/ft of torque across the RPM range. New!! A combination of hardware and software allows access to, and control over, the tuning data stored in an engine s control unit. The days of the guess and burn chip designer are gone! All of the BMP design chips are developed using a Mustang dynamometer and a Horiba air/fuel ratio analyzer. The Horiba air/fuel ratio analyzer provides very accurate and fast measurements of the oxygen content of the exhaust, translaings these values directly to an air/fuel ratio number, as the existing oxygen sensor does. The Mustang dynamometer used by BMP incorporates powerful electric power-absorbers, capable of holding up to 550 horsepower (at the wheels) in a steady-state situation. A two man team handles the final real world road testing and fine tuning. The engineer makes tuning changes according to feedback from the trained test driver. The immediacy of the comment-change-feedback is possible only with such advanced equipment. This guarantees the finest performing software packages available. BMP Hot Chips BMP design not only offers a high performance chip upgrade for your stock BMW. We also offer a complete program of custom chips for some of the more common bolt-on performance upgrades. These up-grades include, high flow air filter systems, free flow exhaust systems, performance camshafts, big bore throttle bodies, and light weight flywheels. We have experienced additional gains of up to 3 horsepower by optimizing the air/fuel ratio for each of these custom applications. Available for most BMW cars. The increased voltage output of today s ignition systems require wires that can properly insulate against grounding or cross-fire. Our high performance, double-wrapped, 7mm dia. plug wire sets will resist temperatures up to 600 F. They are constructed of a copper core, multi-strand wire, wrapped with two layers of silicone rubber. BMP performance plug wire sets are built to exact factory blue prints. Late model cars sets include new impulse sensor cable. As an added bonus, BMP silicone wire sets are supplied with high temperature silicone grease facilitating future removal of the connectors. Why insist On Copper Core Wire? Each plug wire lead in a BMW s wire set must have the exact same resistance ± 10% of a specific value which is unique to the ignition system. Since each lead of a wire set has a different length, this can only be achieved by using copper wire (no resistance) with specific value resistorized ends. Our plug wire sets are manufactured to exact O.E. drawings with 19 strands of tinned copper wire and exact resistorized ends. The precise resistance values can NOT be achieved with Spiro-Core wire! Spiro-core wire was developed for American and Japanese cars that do not required a specific ignition resistance. Using spiro-core wire eliminates the use of the more expensive resistor type plug connectors, which are used on all European automobiles. The difference is that not all plug wires are equal length. With Spiro-core wire this is why resistance values of number 1 spark plug wire are much different than the values of cylinder number 6. The resistance will vary as much as 1000 ohms. per foot of spark plug wire. Wire Insulation: The purpose of good wire insulation is to protect the cable from voltage leaks. The single most important factor for rating insulation performance is the material, not the thickness. Silicone, while resisting temperatures of up to 600 degrees, will give you the greatest protection against these voltage leaks. BMP wire sets are manufactured with2 layers of high quality silicone, unlike some manufactures who use 1 layer of silicone over a less expensive inferior layer. Our product uses 7.0mm, double-wrapped silicone over 19 strand copper core wire. This is the correct wire diameter which fits perfectly into the Factory type plug and cap connectors. Direct-Fire Plug Connectors When replacing the spark plugs on your direct fire ignitions systems we recommend replacing the spark plug connectors. In many cases the resistor in the connector has been damaged due to extreme engine heat or high voltage. 7 Aluminum Water Manifold High Temperature Hood Pads The factory water manifold on all M50 and M52 engines are manufactured from a super durable high quality plastic. Unfortunately plastic will not handle the heat, or over torquing of the mount bolts. Water leaks and overheating has claimed many of these engines do to the failure of the original plastic component. We have now reproduced this item in low pressure cast aluminum. Even if the original unit on your vehicle is not leaking at this time we strongly recommend replacing this item. We recommend also replacing the profile gasket at the same time.
