Fall All Sections COURSE DESCRIPTION & OBJECTIVES GEB 4941 Internship Course is a self-paced, distance correspondence course designed to enhance your internship experience via goal setting, performing industry and company analysis, and selfreflection of vocational choices. All assignments are built to encourage critical thinking and exploration of career paths, identifying skill sets required for launching new careers in industry, and evaluating organizational work culture. In short, this course is designed to enhance student career readiness through self-reflection of vocational options. Upon conclusion, students should be able to answer the following questions: 1. Did this internship confirm or redirect my desire to work for this company, industry, or something similar after graduation? 2. What is required from me to become successful in this industry and type of workplace? 3. What leadership, education, or work experience deficits do I still need to acquire or improve? GEB 4941 Goals and Learning Outcomes Evaluate a company s mission statement, organizational structure, size, and position within an industry to ascertain vocational fit possibilities and compare/contrast to other companies in similar or competing industries Understand career paths, company education preferences, and job responsibilities of company employees and/or supervisors Target desired professional knowledge/skills to develop/enhance while serving as an intern and set specific goals to develop and enhance that knowledge/skills. Course Meeting Times & Lectures: None. All work is via online assignment correspondence. LOCATION & CANVAS ACCESS The course website is a part of UF s Canvas course management system. Enrolled students can access and submit assignments through the GEB 4941 Canvas class webpage. p Tip: Missing Canvas Access? Remember, Canvas access is not instantaneous after adding GEB 4941 onto your schedule; access usually occurs 24 hours after a student adds the course. Please be patient while waiting to access the course during this time.

Should you need assistance once the course starts, which person should you contact? It depends on your issue. Instructors Your instructor is always your first point of contact. Each student is assigned a Heavener instructor. You will receive an introductory Canvas from your instructor within the first two weeks of the semester. Your instructor will handle 90% of questions, problems, and/or issues surrounding on-site internship changes. Basically, your instructor for all issues involving: Assignment Grading. Instructors will grade all assignments and provide feedback on select assignments. If your assignments are not graded in a timely manner, contact your instructor first. On-Site Internship Changes. If you experience a supervisor change, department change, or change in offices geographically, inform your instructor. Your instructor monitors supervisor signatures closely on certain assignments so it is imperative to inform your instructor of any changes on your internship which may affect assignment grading. Career Consultations. Instructors care about your personal success and are available for 1:1 career consultations to troubleshoot any on-the-job internship issues or challenges. Course Manager The course managers handles large GEB 4941 administrative issues largely surrounding registration. Contact the course administrator (not your instructor) for issues involving: Credit Discrepancies. Students are registered for the exact amount of credits requested on their internship application. If your ISIS schedule says differently, notify the course manager immediately. Internship Cancelations. If your internship stops for any reason. Instructor Problems. If your instructor is not responding to s or it has been over three weeks since your assignment(s) was graded, the course manager will intervene.
Page 3 of 7 PROCEDURES & ADMINISTRATION Student Expectations GEB 4941 is a self-paced correspondence course. Students are expected to brief themselves on all assignment deadlines and plan ahead for increased assignment work load possibilities to avoid missing deadlines. Computer Problems Students experiencing difficulty accessing Canvas or having technical computer problems should seek assistance via Warrington s Technology Assistant Center (TAC), not through your instructor or the course manager. Located inside Heavener Hall, call TAC for immediate troubleshooting: If TAC is unable to resolve your computer problem, try contacting the UF Computing Help Desk at HELP or visit their website: helpdesk.circa.ufl.edu. UF Academic Honor Code Agreement As a GEB 4941 enrolled student I agree to the following statement: "I understand that the University of Florida expects its students to be honest in all academic work. I agree to adhere to this commitment to academic honesty and understand that my failure to comply with this commitment may result in disciplinary action up to and including expulsion from the University." All suspected GEB 4941 cheating violations will be reported directly to the Dean of Students Office without hesitation. ASSIGNMENTS Written assignments constitutes almost the full basis of your course grade. GEB 4941 is an academic UF course; collegiate scholarship effort is expected on each assignment submission. Inadequate work, poor academic quality, or assignments submitted with low word counts will receive automatic failing grades. There are six (6) assignments. Each assignment description is found in the Canvas webpage. 1. Company Profile 2. Personal Goal Setting 3. Supervisor Interview 4. Industry and Competitor Research 5. Personal Goal Evaluation & Reflection 6. Supervisor Evaluation Getting Started Canvas Quiz To gain access to course assignments, students must successfully answer all questions on the nongraded Getting Started Quiz. Located on the Start Here tab, the quiz features questions related to the course formatting and assignment dates. Students must earn a perfect 10/10 to unlock all GEB assignments. Most quiz answers are located inside this syllabus. Students have as many attempts as they need to earn the perfect score.
Page 4 of 7 Assignment Deadlines: Soft or Hard Deadlines? No company internship start and stop dates coincide perfectly with UF s Summer A/C or Summer B academic calendar. This is why GEB 4941 is a self-paced course and has soft deadlines on four (4) of the six (6) assignments. Soft Deadlines serve as guideposts; they merely assist students with academic pacing to keep students on-track to finish assignments in a timely manner. There is no penalty for submissions past these soft deadlines. Assignments submitted past soft deadline are always accepted for full credit. Assignments with Soft Deadlines, however, also have a hard deadlines. The four (4) assignments with Soft Deadlines are: Company Profile, Goal Setting, Supervisor Interview, & Industry/Competitor Research Hard Deadlines are set in stone and carry a hefty penalty for late submissions. Failure to submit any assignment before this deadline will result in automatic failure of GEB Definition Assignment Category Soft Deadline No Penalty for late assignment submissions Submissions after soft deadline accepted until the last day of class (hard deadline) 1. Company Profile 2. Personal Goal Setting 3. Supervisor Interview 4. Industry and Competitor Research Hard Deadline Severe Penalty for late submission (i.e., failure of GEB4941) Submissions after posted deadline NOT accepted 5. Personal Goal Evaluation & Reflection 6. Supervisor Evaluation Submission of Assignments All assignments must be typed (not hand written) and uploaded via the Canvas Assignments tab. Documents Accepted: PDF document uploads are preferred for assignment submissions, however Microsoft Word Documents (.doc or.docx) and Open Office files are also accepted where indicated. Any other type of file not listed above (e.g., Apple word processing documents, word perfect, publisher etc.) will not be graded and promptly returned. Naming Assignment Files: Name file submissions as follows: Last Name, Assignment Name EXAMPLE: Guffin, Supervisor Interview.pdf Wrong File Uploads: Canvas allows users one additional upload per assignment. If you mistakenly submit a wrong file, it is your responsibility to upload the correct file OR your instructor immediately through Canvas with the correct attachment before the hard deadline. The last file received by your instructor will be the assignment graded. Hard Deadline Late Submissions: If for some reason Canvas will not allow you to upload an assignment please the assignment to your instructor immediately before the hard deadline. There is no need to notify the GEB 4941 course manager; simply your instructor.
Page 5 of 7 SOFT & HARD DEADLINS Notice the assignment due dates and pairings in the chart below. There are three assignment groupings, with two assignments in each group. Group #1 is due towards the start of your internship Group #2 is due somewhere in the middle Group #3 is due towards the end. In other words generally speaking assignments #1 & #2 are due within the first 1/3 of your internships, assignments #3 & #4 are due the second 1/3 of your internship, and assignments #5 & #6 are due the last 1/3 of your internship. Assignment Group Assignment #1 Company Profile Assignment #2 Personal Goal Setting Soft Deadline 25 Sept #3 Supervisor Interview #4 Industry & Competitor Research 30 Oct #5 Personal Goal Evaluation & Reflection #6 Supervisor Evaluation None * All submission times are 11:59pm or earlier Ideal Assignment Submission Range ~Beginning of Internship (Weeks 1-4 ish) ~Middle of Internship (Weeks 5-9 ish) ~End of Internship (Week 10+) Hard Deadline 9 December * 9 December * 9 December * ** 9 DECEMBER is the LAST DAY TO SUBMIT ANY ASSIGNMENT (11:59 PM) ** All assignments must eventually be submitted before 11:59 p.m. on the hard due date. Do not wait until the closing minutes before the deadline and rush to upload all your assignments! Every semester a handful of students have a computer problem in the closing minutes before the hard assignment deadline and end up submitting late assignments; resulting in automatic failure of GEB4941. DO YOURSELF A FAVOR AND TURN THINGS IN BEFORE THE DEADLINE! Tip: Avoid Failing GEB All assignments must be submitted BEFORE 11:59pm on the hard deadline. Failure to successfully pass all assignments with submissions before the deadline will result in automatic failure of the class eventually resulting in you retaking GEB 4941 in a future term with a new internship. Grading & Assignment Feedback Assignments are usually graded and returned to students within two to three weeks. Please be patient waiting for your instructor to grade your assignment(s). There is typically around 400+ students in the course and each instructor is working with over 30 students.
Page 6 of 7 GRADES & PASSING GEB 4941 GEB 4941 is graded pass/ fail (S/U); students cannot earn a traditional letter grade (i.e., A, B C. etc..) or earn any grade points contributing towards their UF GPA. To pass GEB 4941 with a Satisfactory (S) grade, students must Earn passing marks on all six (6) assignments Submit all coursework before the hard deadline (i.e., if your last internship day of work falls after the hard deadline, all work must still be submitted BEFORE the hard deadline) Work the minimum internship hours corresponding to the number of credit hours requested at the time of your registration. o 1 Credit Hour: 150 hours of on-the-job internship work hours required, minimum o 2 Credit Hours: 260 hours o 3 Credit Hours: 370 hours o 4 Credit Hours: 480 hours Popular FAQs & Answers QUESTIONS 1. Assignment Submission: Page Lengths. How many pages should my assignment be? Read the each assignment instruction carefully. If there is not page length or word count requested, your assignment will be graded on the quality of work not quantity. Make sure you thoroughly answer each question demonstrating collegiate work. This includes showcasing personal-reflection, analytical abilities, and depth of response where appropriate. 2. Assignment Submission: Late Submission. I was lazy and did not plan ahead for my Personal Goal Setting assignment (Assignment #2). It s due tomorrow and my supervisor is not in town! Is there a penalty for submitting this assignment late? No. Re-read the chart above and re-read the differences between a soft and hard deadlines. The Personal Goal Setting assignment (basically assignments #1-4) have soft, suggested deadlines. If a student submits an assignment PAST this deadline there is no penalty; simply submit the assignment as soon as you can. There IS, however a penalty for submitting any assignment past the HARD deadline. 3. Internship Supervisor Change. Halfway through my internship I discovered I m getting a new supervisor (my current supervisor just left for a new job). What do I need to do? your assigned instructor informing them of the change (i.e., not the course manager). Failure to notify your instructor of internship changes may result in failing GEB 4941 (i.e., the supervisor signature should be the same signature for both the Personal Goal Setting assignment #2 and the Supervisor Evaluation #6). In short, if there are any changes in your internship you instructor.
Page 7 of 7 4. Internship Last Day is After GEB 4941 Hard Deadline. Ahh! I m still working at my internship for another two weeks and the hard deadline for GEB 4941 deadline is tomorrow. Can I please wait and submit my assignments on my last day of work? Sorry, you just failed GEB All assignments must be turned in before the hard deadline as clearly stated in this syllabus. Now you must retake GEB 4941 a different term with a new internship. YOUR INTERNSHIP: MAKE THE MOST OF IT! Congratulations again on your acquiring your internship! Heavener is proud of you for taking your next professional steps. The Career and Academic Peer mentors created a quick read for you entitled Maximizing Your Internship Experience to help manage your own internship expectations and uncover hidden professional development possibilities within your internship. A free gift to you to start your internship off on a high note. Best of luck on your internship!
