3 WHAT ARE TOP TASKS? They are the priority use cases - the main tasks that users want to complete and the devices they are most likely to use to do this. They are based on the research that has been done up to this point. NB They are not in order of priority - they only show which tasks are more likely to be high priority use cases across all devices
4 WHAT ARE TOP TASKS FOR? They allow us to start prioritising at a high level - these core needs are what a user-centred design has to focus on, so the Top Tasks provide the foundations on which the user requirements (user stories) will be based. The user stories phase will explore and prioritise these tasks to a much greater extent, and they will define what functional user requirements are needed for each page template type. Two points to note: Top Tasks will not to be considered in isolation from each other: they are discrete tasks, but a user journey may involve more than one task. The top tasks are representative of each audience - they are designed to represent the majority needs. At this stage the needs are deliberately general, to cast the net widely.
5 WHAT ARE PERSONAS? Personas are the distillation of user experience research into a human form. They cannot be considered to be empirical, but the data included within a persona description - biographical details, attitudes, their situation, and the kinds of goals they have in relation to the website - derive from this research. They are individuals who represent a typical person from either all users, or a group of users, within each audience.
6 WHAT ARE PERSONAS FOR? Personas allow us to understand the needs of your users in an easily relatable fashion. Having a human face to represent the data makes it easier to remember and understand audience needs. They help guide the prioritisation of features for the new page template types: we can consider how each feature addresses the needs of each persona, as opposed to each team member allowing their own interpretation of the data to decide what to prioritise.

A prospective graduate student wants to apply for a programme

17 LSE PERSONAS AND USE CASES TOP TASKS: Well Established Task An established student needs to find the details for a course tutor desktop/laptop tablet mobile to contact them about an upcoming assignment An established student would like to see topical information relevant to their course, and read about it while writing up some coursework An established student needs to find out about a support service for students, where its office is located and who to speak to about their needs An established student is living away from campus, so wants to be able to listen to and watch lectures and other study aids on the way into lectures An established student needs to be able to book or organise services relevant to them while at university An established student wants to be alerted to information relevant to them at the university
