1 PT 620 CONTEMPORARY PREACHING/COMMUNICATION (3 Credits) Course Syllabus Trinity Graduate School Semester / Year: May 2015 Residential Session 4 Teaching Blocks: May 4-8, 2015 Professor Name: Rev. Rick Wadholm Jr. Professor [email protected] Course Description: Recognizing the shift in culture and the impact of technology, this course is designed to introduce the student to the context in which preaching (which includes contextual communication) now takes place. Beginning with an affirmation of the role of preaching in the Church, the course examines cultural shift, the impacts of literary and historical deconstruction and models for communicating the timeless message of Christ in the 21st Century. Options for further research that include the use of technology in preaching, preaching in a pluralist context and exploring alternative models of church will enhance the value of this course. The student will be better able to assess the needs of his or her listeners, engage the art of storytelling and generally be better equipped to serve the contemporary church. Course Objectives: This course aims to: 1. Identify and critique contemporary preaching environments, with emphasis on the unique challenges of public ministry in the 21 st century. 2. Discuss and analyze techniques, preaching plans and supportive ministry resources such as drama and media. 3. Facilitate, through discussion, an evaluation of existing models of communication and through directed reading, an increase in theoretical and practical proficiencies in communicating ancient truths in their contemporary context. Upon successful completion of this course students should be able to: 1. Accurately assess preaching environments and contexts, 2. More capably speak into contexts that involve pluralism or postmodern thinking, 3. More astutely plan preaching and communication within their ministry context.
2 4. Be better equipped to support their preaching with the effective use of technology, media and other resources. Required Textbooks: Brueggemann, Walter. 7 NAME Rev. Rick Wadholm Jr. PT 620 Contemporary Preaching/Communication DATE Critical Book Review Brueggemann, Walter. The Practice of Prophetic Imagination: Preaching an Emancipating Word. Minneapolis: Fortress Press, [this is how you will cite each of your books you are reviewing] You will write four critical book reviews consisting of approximately 500 words for each of the assigned books for review. A critical book review contains a brief summary of the book with discussion of the orientation of the author, followed by an interaction with the intention of the volume and whether it sufficiently meets its own agenda (what it says it will do and how, and whether it accomplishes it well or poorly) and any recommendation regarding its readership or pertinent directions for further study/clarification. Parenthetical page citations should be used rather than footnotes. Proper Turabian/Chicago Style footnotes should be used if citing any other works as you critique the book.
8 NAME Rev. Rick Wadholm Jr PT 620 Contemporary Preaching/Communication DATE Research Paper Title Each student will write an approximately word research paper on an issue of contemporary preaching/communication. This paper is due within six weeks of the module. The paper will be typed, 12pt Times New Roman with one inch margins and following proper Turabian/Chicago Style footnote guidelines. Engage and interact with Martin's book for this paper. You do not need to engage the entire work, but only appropriate sections pertinent to your topic. Works cited should include at least eight works. Include at least three journal articles in the works cited as part of the eight required. Topics for consideration might be contemporary models for Pentecostal preaching, effective communication of the gospel in the digital age, preaching to a multicultural congregation, or a theology/philosophy of preaching in a postmodern context. The grading of this assignment follows the criteria delineated on pages of the Graduate School s Academic Handbook. Careful attention should be paid to the assessment tools found there as the assignment is prepared and submitted. This syllabus is provided to students and participants for their general guidance only. It does not constitute a contract; either expresses or implied, and is subject to change without notice.
