1 Great Lakes Bible College Online only from archives Syllabus Ezekiel-Daniel (Major Prophets II) TS-108 Course Description: Both Ezekiel and Daniel prophesied during the period of the exile. Their message is both timely and timeless. This study introduces the student to an important chapter in Israel's history and to a genre of Old Testament literature known as apocalyptic. Among other things, these books establish an important foundation for understanding the language used by John in the book of Revelation. Instructor: Jim Holston Contact Information: 147A Cornerbrook Cres. Waterloo, Ontario NV 1L3 Canada (519) jholston@becon.org Course Objectives: 1. The student will learn the contents of Ezekiel-Daniel. 2. The student will learn the historical, literary, and theological Ezekiel-Daniel. 3. The student will learn the major themes of Ezekiel-Daniel. 4. The student will learn better how to interpret and apply the message of Ezekiel-Daniel. Required Textbooks: Craigie, Peter C. Ezekiel. The Daily Study Bible. Westminster John Knox, Baldwin, J. G. Daniel: An Introduction and Commentary. Tyndale Old Testament Commentaries. Downers Grove, IL: InterVarsity Press, Course Procedures and Requirements 1. Term Paper. Write an exegesis paper on one extended passage (minimum 10 verses) in Ezekiel or Daniel. The paper should be an in-depth examination of the passage, which brings out its original meaning and current relevance. The process used should be to first study the passage without the aid of outside sources. Address the grammatical, historical, literary, and theological aspects of the passage. In this stage use only a Bible (various translations if you like) and a concordance. Second, study the passage with the aid of other books (commentaries, Bible dictionaries, word studies, journal articles, etc.). Where appropriate, set out the variety of possible interpretations of the passage before giving and defending your own interpretation. Term papers are to be pages in length, printed, double-spaced, 12 characters per square inch (e.g. Times New Roman 12). A preliminary bibliography of at least 30 sources is due by Week 7.

2 After your teacher reviews your progress and makes suggestions, you are to revise the bibliography before trimmed it to the best 15 (or more) sources in the final paper. The paper will be graded on the basis of thoughtful engagement with the text, writing style, correct form, and quality of sources used. The final paper is due on Week Memory work: Ezekiel 36:24-28; 37:24-28; Daniel 2:44; 3:17-18; 7: The verses from Ezekiel will be included on Exams 1 and 2. The verses from Daniel will be included on Exam Semester Grade Breakdown: Each assignment will be given a specific number of marks. The course grade will be determined by the percentage of total marks the student has earned during the semester. See the current catalogue for the GLBC s Grading System. 4. Late assignments will be penalized. The longer overdue, the greater the penalty. Yet it is always advantageous to hand in even very late assignments if they are well-done. No assignments will be accepted after the final exam is given, except in the case of prior permission by the instructor due to extenuating circumstances (e.g. death in the family). You are responsible for contacting the instructor and explaining the extenuating circumstances. 5. Exams. Three exams are scheduled (subject to change). Course Outline 1. General Introduction 2. Introduction and text of Ezekiel 3. Introduction and text of Daniel Schedule Dates (subject to change) Week 1, General introduction, Ezekiel Week 2, Ezekiel Week 3, Ezekiel Week 4, Ezekiel Week 5, Exam 1 Week 6, Ezekiel Week 7, Ezekiel, preliminary term paper bibliography of 30 sources due Week 8, Ezekiel Week 9, Exam 2 Week 10, Daniel Week 11, Daniel Week 12, Daniel, term paper due Week 13, Daniel Week 14, Final Exam Selected Bibliography Ezekiel Allen, Leslie C, Ezekiel Word Biblical Commentary.
