12 Consolidation Approach Identification Existing servers are identified and then classified by either internal or vendor application. Classification The process continues to break down and classify each database further using a set of criteria. Organization The conclusion of the process yields a set of databases that are organized into those that can be consolidated and those that cannot.

14 Server Consolidation First phase is a focus on host consolidation. Host consolidation introduces substantially less risk than instance or database consolidation.

15 Server Consolidation The second phase involves gathering the stragglers. Other techniques are employed during this phase to seek out servers and databases that escaped detection during the initial discovery process. This phase is an on-going process and will run concurrently with subsequent phases.

16 Server Consolidation The third phase of the project involves further refinement of the consolidation process. This phase addresses the process of reducing the number of database instances and their associated databases

17 Server Consolidation Data Consolidation is the most difficult and complicated of any phase. A well-managed and successful data consolidation effort can result in large cost savings through a reduction in storage space and reduced administrative costs.

The Microsoft Assessment and Planning (MAP) Toolkit is a powerful inventory, assessment, and reporting tool that can securely assess IT environments for various platform migrations and virtualization without the use of any software agents. This versatile toolkit: Quickly discovers clients, servers, and applications across your IT environment. Conducts migration and virtualization assessments for your IT projects. Auto-generates reports and proposals. Scales well to small businesses as well as large enterprises.

21 What Is MAP? With MAP you get the following reports and proposals for migration to SQL Server 2008: Discovery and inventory Identifies the various SQL Server instances in your organization. Detailed reporting Covers specific SQL Server instances that include component name, version, edition, and more. Hardware and platform details Details for computers that are running SQL Server instances including determining whether the machines are virtual or physical. Identification and evaluation. Determines which existing SQL Server deployments are suitable for migration to SQL Server 2008 based on hardware and platform requirements.

25 MAP Tool Notes Primary focus of tool is to determine virtualization candidates Setting maximum memory determines how tool organizes consolidation candidates. Set the memory to the maximum value if you aren t virtualizing. Tool uses WMI to gather server information. Domain or enterprise admin rights or a user id with admin rights to ALL database servers is needed Tool has two modes, server identification which requires 4-6 hours and performance data capture which requires or more hours. Performance data capture can result in LARGE storage requirements of gigabytes or more. Tool uses SQL Express by default but can use an existing SQL Server database.

26 Other tools SQL scripts to determine database size and location Performance monitor counters to collect statistics on memory, disk, transactions, etc. Surveys and audits of application owners to ascertain peak periods, required availability and future growth
