3 1 PODUC DESCIPION his section contains an overview of the DDP system and brief descriptions of the DDP 8- Position X-Connect Module and the DDP Card, which installs in the module. 1.1 DDP System Overview he DDP system provides a centralized interconnection and circuit access point (called the Digital Distribution Point or DDP) for DS1 (1.544 Mbps) and E1 (2.048 Mbps) digital bit rate circuits operating between cross-connected digital telecommunications equipment (herein called Network Elements or NEs ). he DDP system offers a flexible alternative to hard-wiring NEs to one another, with the crossconnects being the flexible wiring for the circuits. Figure 1 illustrates, in block diagram form, the end to end connectivity between cross-connected NEs when DDP modules are present proving circuit access at the cross-connection. As shown, the cross-connection, in this case, involves two DDP modules, one of for each of the cross-connected NEs. DDP System End-to-End Connectivity Digital circuits are terminated within the DDP modules using a make-before-break, loopthrough connector assembly. Optional circuit cards, installed in the DDP modules, provide the ability to test, patch, or monitor circuits at the cross-connection. he NE circuits passing through the DDP modules operate with or without the circuit cards installed. 4 1.2 DDP 8-Position X-Connect Module he DDP 8-Position X-Connect Module is designed to provide an interconnection and circuit access point between cross-connected NEs. he module is installed on an equipment bar, usually with other like modules. In a typical cross-connection, two DDP modules are involved, one connected to each of the two cross-connected NEs, with the DDP modules then connected to one another (for an illustration, refer to Figure 1). Each module provides interconnection for eight NEs. Jack access to the NE circuits is available using the optional DDP circuit access cards, which provide make-or-break functionality, as already described. Figure 2 shows the main external features of the module, including: Wire Wrap Pins provide termination points for the cross-connected NEs. he module has eight rows of wire wrap pins (with ten pins per row) in the bottom section of the module. Circuit Card Slots allow insertion of optional DDP circuit cards. here are eight card slots corresponding to the eight rows of pins in the bottom section of the module. In a typical cross-connection, two DDP modules are involved, one connected to each of the two cross-connected NEs, with the DDP modules then connected to one another (for an illustration, refer to

5 DDP Circuit Card (described in the next topic) installs within the module, providing the ability to test, patch, or non-intrusively monitor the NE equipment on either side of the cross-connect. 1.3 DDP Circuit Card he DDP Circuit Card, shown in Figure 3, installs in the DDP module. Each circuit card provides, OU, and MON jack access to one NE to NE interconnection. he card can be inserted right side up providing monitor access to the OU signal, or upside down providing monitor access to the signal. DDP Card Being Installed in DDP Module he DDP circuit card utilizes a make-before-break design for circuit access, patching, and nonintrusive monitoring. his design assures that, when a jack is inserted, circuit access is made before the existing circuit is broken. he card is not required for the NE to NE circuit within the DDP module to function. With no card installed, the NE to NE circuit still functions. As a result, the same card can be removed from one slot and placed in any another slot to obtain jack access to any of the eight circuits. Page , ADC elecommunications, Inc.
