2 Code of Practice All Cleanroom operating procedures & safety protocols are contained in the Code of Practice (CoP) You must read the CoP & have signed the Declaration (CoP Appendix 2) to gain entry to the Cleanroom Current CoP available from Juraci Didone You will be informed of any updates The CoP and other information is available on the EXSS Cleanroom website:

4 Whose allowed in? Academic, RAs, PhD students - can obtain swipecard access Postgraduate MSc and MRes project students - with special permission by supervisor, can potentially have swipecard access Undergraduates (MSci, BSc, Erasmus) - no swipecard access, must be supervised at ALL times by Staff (Academic/Technician/RA) ALL of above must: see this Lecture, have induction by Sofia Bekou, do appropriate training, RISK, COSHH

5 Training Cycle i) Read & Sign current CoP / see Safety Lecture ii) Cleanroom Induction by Sofia Bekou iii) Accompanied by assigned Cleanroom Mentor (minimum first 3 sessions; must be signed off by Mentor) iv) Trained on appropriate complete RISK & COSHH) Equipment by Steward (& v) After 6 months can apply to be Senior User (asking Sofia Bekou, and the decision is given after a cleanroom committee meeting)

NORMAL HOURS: 9.00am pm Monday - Friday; AFTER HOURS - restricted to Senior Cleanroom Users* & specified low-risk procedures** (see CoP): am & pm Monday - Friday; ENTRY FORBIDDEN: Official College Out of Hours pm am Monday - Friday; Weekends***; Bank holidays; College holiday closures; (*Senior CR Users 6 months CR experience + signed off by CRC) (**AFTER HOURS Cleanroom Buddy System new CoP) (***Weekends- senior users only can work after providing an extended hour request form signed from the supervisor, ask for it SB)

7 College Safety Training Available on College Website (ask Steve Cussell to enrol you) - Fire prevention - Gas cylinder and cylinders regulators - COSHH Risk Assessment Foundation Training (RAFT) - 2 hour web based course Part of your training as a professional scientist

8 RISK Assessment Trained in each Cleanroom procedure (eg. mask aligner, spincoater, plasma asher ) by assigned Steward Sign trained-user list As part of this training you must Assessment Form for that procedure complete a RISK - details its risks & how to do it safely Copy in Cleanroom office must be signed by you Must keep a personal copy signed by you & Supervisor Risk Assessment Foundation Training (RAFT)

9 Chemical Safety - COSHH COSHH - RISK assessment where chemicals used Must complete a COSHH form for each process involving the use of chemicals (eg. spincoating a polymer film from toluene) - details the risks, how to use the chemicals safely & how to dispose of them - MSDS sheet for each chemical Copy in Cleanroom office must be signed by you Must keep a personal copy signed by you & Supervisor

10 Bring your own chemicals in cleanroom Ask the cleanroom technician before to bring anything When the new chemical is approved then bring the MSDS, the risk assessment and the COSHH form for your own chemical Any chemical brought in the cleanroom must be up to 1L bottle or lower Remember to write your name on the bottle or the group that belongs to Risk Assessment Foundation Training (RAFT)

11 Cleanroom protective clothing Before entering cleanroom ALL users must wear: Gloves (double pair to avoid spreading contamination) Cleanroom Suit Eye Protection! (no contact lenses) Remember you have to protect yourself from YOUR procedure AND all the OTHER procedures in the Cleanroom! Remember to change you CR coverall once per month

12 Laminar Flow and Wet Benches Laminar Flow Hood Wet bench Tell Tale = Air In Source of clean air for working with solid samples and sealed solutions Uncovered Solvents not to be Used here Extraction occurs down through the holes in the Bench. Work with Splash Guard Down Keep work 15cm back from edge Do not sit beside wet bench keep off Laminar Flow for increased Extraction Be aware of other experiments in Hood Keep sash to the safety working level

13 Handling of Solvents, Acids & Bases Only work with solvents in fume hood (wet bench) not on laminar flow hoods and normal benches. When using wipes with solvent on them leave in fume hood to dry, before putting in bin. When transporting Winchester flasks (volumes > 100 ml), must use basket.

14 Solvent Disposal assess in COSHH before use Disposal Chlorinated Solvent Waste bottle Non-chlorinated Solvent Waste bottle Do not tightly seal bottle lid when in fume hood (but do not leave it open as well) Never put any Acid/Base into Solvent Waste Never change label on any bottle even if empty If in doubt of how to dispose of anything ASK but should have assessed in COSHH before use (read the MSDS)

15 Resist Remover Disposal assess in COSHH before use Photoresist remover disposal In non-chlorinated Solvent Waste bottle If in doubt of how to dispose of anything ASK but should have assessed in COSHH before use (read the MSDS)

16 Acid Disposal assess in COSHH before use Depends on acid & what it has been used for For some, provided the amount of acid is < 10ml Run water down the sink for about seconds VERY SLOWLY add acid while water is running Continue to run water for up to 10 minutes depending on acid concentration NB. When diluting acids - Always Add Acid to Water (AAAW) and never the reverse (HF special case - do not currently use in Cleanroom) If in doubt of how to dispose of anything ASK but should have assessed in COSHH before use

17 Disposal of Sharp & Potentially Hazardous Items SHARPS BINS Waste vials (glass, plastic) Glass substrates Needles, Blades Broken glass, broken hard plastic Pipettes, Pipette tips Syringes, Filters (glass, plastic) ANYTHING WHICH COULD CUT OR PIERCE ANYTHING WHICH IS POTENTIALLY HAZARDOUS (contaminated syringes, filters, etc) Large items - see Sofia Bekou

18 Disposal of Soft Waste NORMAL BINS Paper Gloves Foil Tissues (*all the above only when are dry) If in doubt - see Sofia Bekou

19 Overcrowding If there too many people in the Cleanroom you are going to be unable to work safely Try to come back later when there are less people there. Be aware of other user s procedures.

20 Solitary Work Assess through RISK Low risk work Profilometer (Dektak & alphastep), using camera, etc - OK Solution work - few ml - OK Solution work - larger volumes (eg. > 100ml or so & handling Winchesters) - should be at least 2 people in Cleanroom AFTER HOURS 2 people in Cleanroom or use Cleanroom Buddy who knows your schedule

21 Last to leave the cleanroom? In the working hours: Switch off lights Turn off Nitrogen Switch off water After 5pm: Lock the office

22 Cleanliness It is a Cleanroom keep it clean! Wipe down all containers with IPA & a wipe before bringing into cleanroom Smokers must wait 30 mins after smoke before entering

23 Cleanliness Wipe up any small spills & splashes in wet benches Someone else s waste = unknown hazard! - label all your samples Clean-up your mess (spin-coater chuck, waste tissues, etc) Be considerate of other users When you are finished, ensure that you have returned everything to its place and tidied up after yourself;

24 Cleanliness forbidden items No ordinary paper, lab books, cardboard boxes (introduces fibres, particulates) Non forbidden, but: Mobile phones, laptops (introduces dust, particulates + this is a wet lab)

25 Cleanliness paper signs Never cut cleanroom paper (introduces fibres, particulates) Use either whole piece of cleanroom paper or write sign on folded wipe

26 Cleanroom Cleaning Rota You re a Registered User you re on the List Weekly rota work in pairs do all the duties Please sign the cleaning log when you carry out your duties. The log can be found with the clean room log book in the lobby. You are kindly reminded that these duties are for the whole week and require you to pay regular visits throughout the period.

27 Emergency Procedures Fire Evacuate & set off building Alarms (*other alarms in cleanroom ) Small Spillage Use Soaking Granules (trivorex, neutralizer and absorbent) (ensure you know where these are kept) Large Spills - Evacuate & set off building Alarms, inform Committee members immediately

28 Emergency Procedures Contact member of Cleanroom committee - see list at start If necessary Summon a First Aider (list on the wall of every lab), and contact the College emergency service on 4444 College emergency service from mobile

29 Incident reporting Procedure of reporting accidents and near misses Importance of reporting of all accidents and near misses Near miss: - Any undesired event or condition where no injury, ill health, damage or other loss occurs - A near miss today could be an accident tomorrow

30 Penalties When you don t : - Follow the cleanroom rules - Do appropriately the cleaning rota - Bring the appropriate COSHH forms - Clean your mess after use - Wear appropriate cleanroom garment - Label appropriately your stuff - Ask the permission to work over the weekends - Use of equipment without booking Consequences: - 1st time: stop the swipecard for a week - 2nd time: stop the swipecard for a month - 3rd time: discussing with the supervisor and agree what follows
