3 Who am I?! Born in Washington, D.C.! Grew up in Virginia Beach, Virginia! B.S. Biology, Howard University 1994! Eight years as a Biological Lab Research Assistant (NIH and USUHS)! M.A.T. Secondary Science Education, Trinity University 2005! Ten years STEM teaching experience! Married 13 years; 3 children

5 McKinley Tech Brief History! Established in 1902 as a technical school (McKinley Technical HS)! Emphasized trades such as building, printing and engineering! Moved to present location in 1928; addition built in 1957(sq. footage: 282,000- capacity: 2000)! School was shuttered in 1997 due to under enrollment (approx. 500)

During the mayoral election campaign of 1998 then Chief Financial Officer Anthony Williams promised the city a technology focused high school to connect city youth with the growing technology basis of the Washington metro area economy.! After assuming the position of Mayor in January, 1999 planning began for finding a site for a technology high school! Demolition of the interior began in Construction was completed in 2004.! Total cost (including overruns) - $75 million

8 McKinley Tech Brief History Cont d! The school was reopened as McKinley Technology High School with an enrollment of 400 (grades 9 and 10)! Grades 11 and 12 were added in 2005 and 2006! McKinley s first graduating class (140 students) in a decade received their diplomas in June of 2007.! In 2012, McKinley was named a National Blue Ribbon School by the Department of Education
