Duke is vernoem na Thomas Duke, wat IN vroeë jare toe Duke nog beide sy slagtande gehad het. tussen 1903 en 1923 veldwagter in onder Sabie was. Dit kom nadat die omgewings impak studie voltooi is en goedgekeur is op 27 September, luidens Anelle Lotter van Zitholele Consulting. Inwoners moet wel daarop let dat daar in die stadium slegs toestemming gegee is om die Tzaneendam se wal te verhoog en nie die konstruksie by die voorgenome dam in Nwamitwa of enige van die ander geassosieerde infrastrukture nie. In terme van hoofstuk 7, regulasie 385 van 2006 kan rolspelers appelleer teen die besluit. Raw sewerage runs through the streets in Modjadjiskloof and children are often seen playing near it. "The sewer system is new and was only signed off a few months ago," says DA Councillor for the GLM, Matie Willemse, "Retentions have been paid and contractors are sitting pretty while the residents of the affected areas suffer daily. Taxi slams into jack-knifed truck A TERRIBLE accident took place on the Phalaborwa road close to the Mieliekloof turn-off, on Thursday last week. According to reports, a vehicle travelling towards Tzaneen made a turn onto an adjoining road in front of a truck. Several passengers were injured and taken to hospital after this accident and the driver of the taxi was caught in the crushed vehicle and had to be cut free of the wreckage. The funds generated will be used to open a Recreation centre in Mooketsi containing a gym and a swimming pool etc. Fantastic stalls, live entertainment, MTB challenges, a dance and so much more will be on offer. There will be a 70km, a 35km and a 10km Mountain bike challenge on the day. Entry fees are as follows: 70km: R150, 35km: R100 and the 10km fun ride: R40. Every participant that completes will receive a medal and big prizes will be up for grabs. Entry forms are available on the brand new website: and at Boulevard Cycles in Tzaneen. The last day of entry will be on October 22, late entries will be accepted on the day, but a penalty fee will be c h a rg e d. A Scooter race for the young ones will also start at around 14:00 at R30 per entry. The categories are: 0-4 years - scooters, 4-7 years - scooters and bicycles with side wheels and 7-11 years - bicycles. The winner will receive a wonderful medal and all kids will receive a gift. 7 ALGEMEEN/BRIEWE 'n VRYSTATER, Johan Jacobs het onlangs die eerste paar tree van 'n beplande km jaar-lange staptog gegee - ten bate van kinders met diabetes. Jacobs het verlede week in Tzaneen aangedoen. Johan Jacobs van Parys gaan altesaam kilometer te voet aflê om bewustheid te skep en geld in te samel vir dié siektestoestand. Jacobs het die Juvenile Diabetes Action Group (JDAG) 'n paar jaar gelede gestig, en stap nou onder dié vaandel. Hy gaan by verskeie dorpies stop en met kinders in skole praat oor vroeë diagnosering en gevaartekens van dié siekte. Hulle beplan om een miljoen oranje Diabetes T-hemde tydens sy staptog te verkoop, en met daardie geld wil hulle toetsstrokies vir mense beskikbaar stel wat dit nodig het. Hy het vanaf Hoërskool Parys begin stap, en sal van daar deur Carletonville, Brits, Rustenburg, Tzaneen, Nelspruit, Richardsbaai, Kaapstad en Springbok stap waarna hy huiswaarts sal keer. In Ward 3 of Kgapane, in Greater Letaba Municipality, the new councillor has not been heard of or seen again. We are advised that her Ward Committee has been established, yet we have no idea who is on it or where to direct our concerns. Enquiries made within the Municipality reveal that our Councillor has not yet attended a council meeting either. We are told that she works at the local hospital, but is actually resident in Phalaborwa. In terms of the ANC s regulations, she is not allowed to hold a position in a Government Department and at the same time hold the position of a Municipal Councillor. Money is being spent on an official s salary, but the recipient has not yet performed. The DA has one representative in the Municipality. He has uncovered corruption, mismanagement of funds, tender irregularities and much more. He puts in double the time of any other Councillor in the Municipality and ensures that he attends the majority of the Council meetings. Once again, the DA is leading by example. The Letaba Municipality, the Mayor, Municipal Manager and the Councillors are an embarrassment to us. This is not what the people voted for. Hopefully the voters are starting to see the light. Missing from the photo is Candice Dabner. THE Round Table Tzaneen 96 celebrated South African heritage during National Braai Day at the Oasis Mall, with Tzaneen's very first drive thru braai. The preparations started early and by 08:30 Round Table Tzaneen 96 was ready for their customers. The National Braai Day was well supported by family, friends and the community. Round Table Tzaneen 96 would like to thank all their sponsors and the community for all their assistance and support shown during the project. A total of 225 boerewors rolls were sold between 08:30 and 15:00. The Tablers, pipe liners, guests and ladies were greatly surprised by the amount of boerewors rolls sold. The drive thru was extremely popular, the customers enjoyed the idea of a drive thru as well as the service that went with it. Money raised from this well-run project will be donated to a worthy cause within the Tzaneen area. Although the project did not raise a huge amount of money for charity, the Round Table Tzaneen 96 is planning on making this a more frequent event, which we can all look forward to. Charity organisation offers wellness program The CHoiCe Trust group has recently come up with a Wellness Programme that will focus on HIV/Aids and other health issues in farms. The programme is aimed at encouraging farmers to support their employees in living positively and healthily. "The spotlight has been on migrant workers who have been identified as a most at risk population - whose living and working arrangements have created a dangerous lifestyle that leads them to being more at risk of being infected with HIV. The programme does not focused only on migrant workers though, and has also not focused only on HIV and AIDS. "There are many different health concerns that are addressed - including unhealthy diets, substance abuse, hypertension and other silent killers, as well as social issues such as gender inequality - which have increasingly negative impacts on businesses and farms. "HIV/AIDS and other health issues lead to decreased productivity, decreased quality of services, and decreased work moral and work ethics," says Nikki Sturt Thompson of CHoiCe Trust. The Wellness Programme by CHoiCe Trust is designed to assist management to realise the impact of HIV/AIDS and other health issues, in order to accept it and support employees. The programme includes HIV counseling and testing on site, health talks with workers, hygiene assessments, and, amongst other things, working with employees to identify peer educators amongst themselves who will tvpeople41section1conv ert.indd 1 0 PM 2011/10/04 03:22:4 become advocates for healthy living and open disclosure. The Du Roi group is already working closely with CHoiCe in this Wellness Programme and has noted the benefits that it has brought to their business. "Our wellness policy is in place and includes a detailed wellness survey to ensure that the company's efforts are focussed and based on actual problems that will be extrapolated in an action plan for the future, which includes CHoiCe in the on-going improvement of the health and wellbeing of all in our companies," says Davson. "This is an opportunity for local farms and businesses to join hands with the organisation and become responsible employers in addressing these critical health issues, before their impact on worker productivity and business profits become even more severe," said Thompson. THE matriculants of St. George College held a colourful matric farewell evening recently at Tzaneen Country Lodge. The headmistress, Joya Varughese, welcomed all in the beautifully decorated hall. The learners were brilliantly dressed for the occasion. Everybody enjoyed the evening thoroughly with great music, fun dance and delicious food. Every learner was presented with a gift. The best dressed boy, girl, best couple and best dancer were all given special gifts before the function ended at 21:30. "It was indeed an unforgettable evening for everyone" said Varuhese. Altona struts his stuff in Johannesburg ONE of the top twenty IEB competitors at the IT Showcase held in Johannesburg during the holidays, Christopher Altona, is a grade 12 Stanfordian. Altona with his IT teacher, Joy Park. Stanfordians in the city of love OVER the September holiday 18 Stanfordians, accompanied by two staff members, made their way to the French capital, Paris. They spent a very enjoyable week exploring and touring the wonderful city and visiting its many attractions. Their itinerary included all the famous sites such as the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower, and also some less known areas such as daily markets to get a view of French life. The majority of the group are members of the French Club and showed off their linguistic skills when ordering in shops and cafes, and the others in the group were art students who could appreciate fully the works they were able to see in Paris fantastic galleries. All in all, it was another excellent and enjoyable Stanford trip abroad.

DIE Hoërskool Merensky se Skool vir Agri-Wetenksappe het onlangs 'n uiters geslaagde toer na die Kruger Nasionale Wildtuin onderneem. 'n Groep Graad 10 leerders wat Landbou Wetenskap of Landbou Bestuur as vak neem, is die geleentheid aangebied om die werksaamhede van die personeel in die Kruger wildtuin van nader te aanskou. Lesings wat aangebied is deur van die beste navorsers in die wereld was van die hoogte punte van die toer. Besoeke aan Vossies pronk op matriek afskeid DIE Matriekafskeid van die Hoërskool Ben Vorster het op 29 September plaasgevind. 'n Paar interessante nuwighede het hierdie jaar se matriekafskeid gekenmerk. Vir die eerste keer ooit het die funksie op twee plekke geskied. Die Vossies het eers by die skoolsaal bymekaar gekom saam met hulle ouers vir die afhandeling van al die formaliteite. Besondere moeite is gedoen met die vervoer tot by die skool. Onder die klank van polsende Afrika-dromme, het die matrikulante die toeskouers verstom met hulle stylvolle aankoms en klere. Die ouers het in die saal gewag en die toesprake is alles in die saal afgehandel. Hierna het die Vossies op 'n Afrika-safari vertrek per bus na Letaba River Lodge, waar hulle onthaal is op wonderlike kos en gedans het tot laat. Die reëlingskomitee wil graag van die geleentheid gebruik maak om André de Lange en sy bekwame span by Letaba River Lodge te bedank vir en geluk te wens met die ongelooflike diens wat hulle ontvang het. Dit het alle verwagtinge oortref en die Vossies het verstom gestaan voor die onbaatsugtige moeite wat gedoen is om van die funksie 'n sukses te maak. Plasies leerders lê besoek af in Kruger Wildtuin departemente wat nie vir die publiek oop is nie het die leerders baie insig gegee in die velde van bewaring, omgewingsbestuur en bio-diversiteit. Daar is deur die loop van die dag hard gewerk en geleer maar ook tyd ingeruim vir 'n bietjie aftyd waartydens 'n wild besigtiging rit plaasgevind het. Verdere toere word vir volgende jaar beplan en sal ook deel vorm van die graad 10 leerplan in die toekoms. DIE Vossie skyfskietspan wat puik gevaar het aan die SA kampioenskap in die Kaap. Sewe van Ben Vorster se skuts was deel van die Limpopo-span (22 Limpopo skuts)wat hul staal teen die res van die land se beste skuts gaan meet het. Daar was 397 skuts ingeskryf vir die kompetisie. Die Vossies het baie goed gevaar met Lambré Griesel wat sewende geëindig het in die 10m staan posisie met n telling van 357 uit 400. Hy eindig 12de uit 115 0/21 skuts met 1085 uit 1200 punte en 'n gemiddeld van 90.3%. Daar was slegs 3,3% verskil tussen hom en die algehele wenner van die kompetisie. Jan-Daniël Griesel en Machané Dupper het geskitter met 84% onderskeidelik, Bernadine Voster 81,4%, Werner van Rensburg met 79% en TJ Voster het 72% behaal. Lammie Griesel wat ook die voorsitter is van die Limpopo Skole Skyfskiet Unie, is baie trots op die Vossies. Hy het ook die Limpopo Span Kaap toe vergesel. The Plasies also took 15 silver medals and 8 bronze medals, firmly stamping their mark on the final results. THE PLASIES were the proud hosts of the 3rd annual Westfalia Tritech National Science and Technology Fair on September 23 and 24, and the Plasies bagged most of the medals during the fair. This competition involved the participation of over 5000 learners in school and regional levels and ultimately resulted in 220 learners participating in the national finals. The competition was extremely stiff with a number of outstanding projects being presented by the participating learners. Judging started early on Friday morning with learners' projects being evaluated by a panel of specialist judges and their peers. It is precisely because of the peer review process that participants in Westfalia-Tritech have been able to improve the quality of their projects. After the gruelling judging process the participating learners were bussed off to the Magoebaskloof Adventure centre where they participated in a number of enjoyable activities including a wall climb, obstacle course and a canopy tour. Once again Merensky learners have excelled in the final round of Westfalia -Tritech, receiving 8 bronze medals, 15 silver medals and 20 gold medals. In addition to the above the following Plasies were awarded prizes in the specialist categories: Kyle and Cavan Smith for Best Contribution towards the Community, Alicia du Toit for Best Contribution towards Environment (Grade 10-12), Simone Schoeman for Best Health Science (Grade 7-9), Loame Van Zyl for Best Contribution towards Environment (Grade 7-9), Elisio Rechfor Best Engineering Project (Grade10-12); Franco Matthee for Best Project Grade 8, Hishaam Khanfor Best Project Grade 9, Rodney Stevens for Best Project Grade 10 and Chantel Schoeman for the Overall Best Project. Merensky is also extremely proud that for the 3rd consecutive year the overall winner of the Westfalia-Tritech national finals is a Plasie.
