April 15, 2016 Presented by David Falldien Disaster Recovery: For business continuity
About Me: Senior System Administrator at Dalhousie University Working in IT for 15 years, and the DalCard Program for 13+ of those. Responsible for multiple enterprise wide non-erp systems including disaster recovery, capacity planning and lifecycle maintenance.
Disaster recovery focuses on the IT or technology systems supporting critical business functions, as opposed to business continuity, which involves keeping all essential aspects of a business functioning despite significant disruptive events. Disaster recovery is therefore a subset of business continuity. - Wikipedia
It s all about Business Continuity To aid in Business continuity we have to have a DR plan. Todays talk focused on the IT side of DR (recovery from sustained interruption or failure in systems use, access or functionality)
What would you do?
Or worse yet, what if this happened?
What do you consider acceptable disruption?
Do you have a Disaster Recover Plan? Are aspects of your system critical in a life safety situation (fire, earthquake, flooding) Financial implications of failure How is the universities mission affected by system down time?
Scope and Requirements
One of the first and most important steps is Defining scope and preforming a business impact analysis.
EXAMPLE impact 1 (top row): low: disruption workaround available medium: partial outage in multiple pos area high: Total outage impact 2 (side row): low < 50 customers per hour med < 100 customers per hour high >100 customers per hour
What is out of scope? This is as important as what is in scope. Clearly define what you plan on not including in the scope of your DR plan.
Business Continuity by Design
Old School Backup and restore effective, but results in downtime for the restore Clustering Helps protect against system failure but is still typically co-located.
New(er) school Virtualization Separates the application and hardware allowing for hardware failure without downtime Cloud based Decreases on premise liability but increases data concerns and internet connectivity issues Mixed environment of cloud and on premise.
Emergency Communication Plan
1. Develop a modern communications plan 2. Ensure executive collaboration and decision-making 3. Conduct frequent training and testing 4. Compose your message carefully 5. Select the right automated notification technology
Test your DR plan!
What are the goals of each test Define key stakeholders What are the constraints of the test What will you do with test results
Simple tasks to test fundimentals Ensure backups are being tested regularly Review DR plan to ensure all required tests are being done
Remember your Office Card office may not be accessible. Still a need to produce cards for access or meals
