1 Agenda Wireless Networks and Mobile Systems Lecture 9 Satellite Internet Satellite Communication and the Internet It s History and the Technology History of satellite communication in the Internet Basic technology on satellite internet AI3 overview Satellite Internet 2 Satellite Communication and the Internet It s History and the Technology History of the satellite communication in the Internet Early stage of the Internet Very beginning Packet radio network in Hawaii. (1970) ALOHAnet Project by UH ARPANET(1970) SATNET 1975 Atlantic Packet Satellite Network First satellite network on the Internet US, England, Norway, etc. INTELSAT The First Demonstration of ARPANET, SATNET, PRNET 1977 First demonstration ARPANET San Francisco Bay Packet Radio Net (PRNET) Atlantic Packet Satellite Network (SATNET) Operation of Internet protocols with BBN-supplied gateways. Satellite Internet 5 Satellite Internet 6 1

2 The First Demonstration of ARPANET, SATNET, PRNET Major Events in the Internet TCP/IP released 1984 JUNET UUCP based network in Japan(R&D) 1986 NFSNET Government supported IP network in US UUNET The first UUCP based commercial network Satellite Internet 7 Satellite Internet 8 Major Events in the Internet Windows95 PC got IP stack in the OS as a default AI 3 Satellite IP testbed in Asian regions 1996 DirecPC IP connectivity service via one way satellite link UDLR-WG in IETF Unidirectional Link Routing WG established in the routing area of IETF. Current Activity and Near Future UDLR network deployment Asia(WIDE, AI 3,etc.) Europe(Udcast) On-board switching capability Experimental satellite program ACTS EULETSAT Switch the traffic on the satellite Satellite Internet 9 Satellite Internet 10 Satellite Internet Technology Satellite Internet Technology Network Topology Satellite link act as a both way communication link Satellite link act as a one way communication link Provide a connectivity to networks Provide a connectivity to a node RFCs ->BDL ->UDL Satellite Internet 12 2

3 UDLR network topology(rfc3077) Connect a host via UDL Provide a connectivity to networks. Provide connectivity to a node(host). Dynamic routing capability No routing capability. Satellite Internet 13 Satellite Internet 14 Connect a host via UDL(Cont.) Route a traffic to the satellite link by Proxy server. DirecPC model RFCs related to satellite communication RFC2488 Enhancing TCP Over Satellite Channels using standard Mechanisms RFC2767 Ongoing TCP Research Related to Satellites RFC3077 A Link-Layer Tunneling Mechanism for Unidirectional Links Satellite Internet 15 Satellite Internet 16 RFC3077 A Link-Layer Tunneling Mechanism for Unidirectional Links Current dynamic routing protocols require that links have to have bi-directional communication capability. RFC3077 provide a solution which allows to use dynamic routing mechanism on the UDL network. RFC3077 provide bi-directional communication using link-layer tunnel. Network Topology and Protocols Use satellite links as a both way communication links. No restriction using IP protocols (e.g. Dynamic routing protocols) Use satellite links as a one way communication links. UDL Standard protocols assume the communication links have both way communication capability. Satellite Internet 17 Satellite Internet 18 3

4 UDL network summary Network connectivity model Use RFC3077 Transparent dynamic routing operation Unicast and Multicast Host connectivity model DirecPC style service Subset of Network connectivity model There are several implementation DirecPC, MegaWave, etc. Future Satellite Internet Technology Key technology Multi spot beam antenna(ku and Ka band) Combination of small spot beam E.g. Tokyo beam, Osaka beam etc. On board switch Switch the traffic(packet) from one spot beam to another beam. Uplink from Tokyo beam switch to the Osaka down link beam. What kind of switch should be placed on the spacecraft? ATM? MPEG? IP? Satellite Internet 19 Satellite Internet 20 Summary Satellite communication has been used in the Internet from the very beginning. New technology which enables to use dynamic routing function on the UDL has been available(rfc3077). Next generation of the satellite Internet technology has been studied and it will be available soon. AI3 and SOI-Asia Satellite Internet 21 What is AI 3 Project? Asian Internet Interconnection Initiatives An international research consortium among research institutes in Asian region Started in 1995 Objective To form a group of researchers to develop leading edge technologies for the Internet What is AI 3 Project? (Cont.) Employing Satellite link for the Internet Bi-directional link Uni-directional link (One way link) One of the outcome from the WIDE is RFC3077 Footprint: from India to Japan Using flexible link capability Ai3 could provide IP connectivity where it is needed.
