2 Introduction Speakers When taking the crucial step from accountant to a senior finance professional it is imperative that you are aware of the legal, regulatory and organisational context of arriving at a more senior position. In order to succeed you need strong interpersonal skills because technical skills alone will not be enough. This five day-modular programme has been tailored by finance and development professionals, and is aimed at understanding the important skills required to help deal with new and challenging situations faced by those aspiring to a senior finance role. You will be able to learn and test new techniques in a risk-free environment. Who should attend? Individuals recently appointed to, or aspiring to, senior positions such as financial controller or director in the private or public sector where interpersonal and communication skills are expected from the board and other senior executives. What will you gain? The knowledge and skills to make a positive change in your personal performance, using skills such as management, communication, leadership, influencing and negotiation and project and stakeholder management. Garry Buick ACMA, CGMA Garry is the Director of Professional Development at BPP, and has had extensive experience in management reporting and financial control. He has worked with GlaxoSmithKline in a number of area Finance Director roles in the manufacturing division. He also worked in China as a key member of the implementation team for low-cost product sourcing. Richard Mallett FCMA, CGMA Richard has a wealth of experience in roles including Corporate Finance Manager at Reed International, Group Financial Controller at Sainsbury s and Technical Director at CIMA. During his time with CIMA, Richard was also Technical Adviser to the UK member of the Professional Accountants Business Committee of the International Federation of Accountants. Andy Wilkes ACMA, CGMA Andy has worked in senior management for over 17 years, helping public sector organisations implement more commercial accounting methods. Andy has experience in change management and budgeting across Government and managed a team that developed and delivered the technical systems and associated financial awareness training for the Highways Agency. 3

There is a need to motivate your team when it is faced with large increases in workload such as acquisitions, systems implementation and year end statutory reporting. Appreciate the differences between management and leadership Understand where leadership fits into organisations Recognise and apply different leadership styles Coach and develop team members Explore the art of motivation Meet the challenge of delegation Realise what stops you from delegating and learn effective solutions Get the appropriate level and balance of supervision for each individual 4 5

4 Module 4 Influencing, persuading and negotiating skills Module 5 Project and stakeholder management You will often have decision making powers for the procurement of various goods and services from outside suppliers and will have to negotiate the best possible deal. There are many situations when senior finance executives have to negotiate with internal stakeholders, not least in the budget process. Influencing, persuading and negotiating skills are essential for relationship building. Understand the fundamentals of negotiation Negotiate more comfortably Understand the negotiation process and leverage it to achieve desired outcomes Develop effective interpersonal and communication skills Understand negotiation theories and recognise patterns Plan and participate in team negotiations Recognise difficult negotiators and have strategies for dealing with them effectively You need project and stakeholder management skills to lead large and diverse plans. These skills are essential for all projects, including more routine processes such as year end reporting and budgeting.
