1 1 Advanced Data Protection by Global Data Vault Advanced Data Protection provides a genuinely better solution to protect business systems for small and medium sized companies. We see our job at GDV as more than just providing Business Continuity. We see it as protecting organizations, jobs, livelihoods and families.

2 2 Here are the things we all worry about: fires, floods, tornados, lightening, earthquakes, hurricanes, virus infections, hardware failures, software problems, hackers, thieves and spies.

3 3 Vision Let me share some thoughts about our vision and how it was formed...our space is busy: There are commodity backup solutions. There are sophisticated local backup solutions. And there are high end online solutions. And hybrid local / online solutions. None of these are good enough to provide proper protection. Why? Because none can offer fast recovery from every possible failure. Our vision and our goal was to build a solution to provide fast recovery from every possible failure and to be able to offer it at a price point that is affordable even for small and medium sized businesses. Next we ll cover the following: - what are all of the possible failures - what a typical customer infrastructure looks like - how ADP is deployed in the real world - discuss varying recovery options - and I ll ask a few questions about your recovery experiences

4 4 The 5 Failures Files, Folders, s A database: SQL, Exchange A server (software problem) A server (hardware problem) The entire infrastructure There are Five Failures which can strike your IT environment: You can lose files, folders or s. You can lose a database such as SQL or Exchange. You can lose a server as a result of a software issue like a virus. or due to hardware failure. Finally, you can lose your entire IT infrastructure due to a fire, flood or other site disaster - or simply just need to evacuate.

5 5 Typical Network application mail database... directory web servers This is a typical customer network. It includes application, mail and database serves. Many networks also have directory servers and / or web servers.

6 6 Customer Network How ADP is deployed: GDV provides a small appliance called a LDV which connects to your network.

7 7 Customer Network We also provide a portable disk drive to use to transfer the initial large backup to our data center.

8 8 Customer Network Global Data Vault A backup is made on the LDV and copied to the portable drive. All the data is encrypted for security. Then the drive is sent to our primary data center in Dallas.

9 9 Customer Network Global Data Vault From that drive, we create a private secure virtualized copy of your entire network inside our data center.

10 10 Customer Network Global Data Vault Then we create a redundant copy at our backup data center and initiate synchronization from your network, to the LDV and then to our data centers. Finally, we setup a VPN for DR access. Let s talk about the Five Failures and how APD compares to other recovery strategies.

11 11 Recovery in the Real World Recovery options: If you have lost files folders or s, it is fast and easy to recover locally or from the data center. If you were making tape backup, you would need to find the latest tape - then search through it. Have any of you ever tried to recover one lost XLS file or one lost folder from tape? Why not? It is too hard, too slow. ADP is all disk based so this type of recovery is fast. If you lost a database, if you re using tape, what problems does tape pose? you have the same speed issues to do the lookup on tape. If you were using online backup only, what sort of challenges are you likely to face? With ADP, your first option is to restore it from the LDV quickly. If you lost an entire server to a software failure, you ll need to do to a bare-metal restore. Better tape systems do support that, but not simultaneously with automatic offsite protection. How do you get tapes offsite? And then get them back if needed? Is that fast or easy? With ADP you can do a BM restore directly from the LDV. If you lost an entire server to a hardware failure, you ll need to do to a bare-metal restore - to dissimilar hardware. Online backup cannot do better than 24 hours in this case. Some tape systems support bare-metal restore to dissimilar hardware...has anyone here attempted bare metal restores to dissimilar hardware? ADP provides bare-metal restore directly from the LDV - even to new and/or different hardware - even to VM s. ADP provides VPN access to the virtualized copies of your servers. We can have your server running in our DC in an hour - and give you access that quickly. Is there any way to accomplish all of this with tape or online backup or any other solution?
