THIS COMMUNITY SERVICE GUIDE IS BY NO MEANS AN EHAUSTIVE LIST OF MINISTRIES IN WHICH TO SERVE, BUT A RESOURCE THAT WE HOPE TO ADD TO EACH YEAR AS OUR STUDENTS AND FAMILIES DISCOVER EVEN MORE OPPORTUNITIES TO SERVE IN OUR COMMUNITY. 3 ATLANTA COMMUNITY FOOD BANK , CONTACT: The ACFB, located just off of Hollowell parkway in Atlanta, distributes over 45 million pounds of food and groceries each year. Volunteer opportunities involve sorting and packing food boxes. Volunteer Department if families, school or youth groups are interested in scheduling an opportunity. You must make a reservation. Adults must accompany volunteers under 18 years old. All volunteers must wear closed toe shoes. You must download and sign their Youth Liability Waiver before your child can volunteer. ATLANTA MISSION Atlanta Mission, formerly called Atlanta Union Mission, provides people in Atlanta and the metropolitan area with emergency shelter, residential discipleship, job attainment services and transitional housing. Volunteer opportunities include serving meals, sorting through clothing and household items, spending time with children, hosting a monthly birthday party and special events and project. AYA gives students the necessary foundation for future educational and individual success. AYA is where our 8 th grade students have been organizing and running their Field Day for over 6 years. Ongoing opportunities include working with children after school, assisting with facilities and organizational projects (food bank, sorting materials) and special projects.
4 ATLANTA YOUTH PROJECT , CONTACT: Larry Teem at Seeking opportunities to reach urban youth in Atlanta.Volunteer opportunities involve tutoring and running activities for their after school program from 3-6 Monday through Friday. There is an opportunity for a large group of students to volunteer on a Saturday at God s Farm building fences, painting, cleaning and doing other farm chores. if you are interested. BOOKS FOR AFRICA , CONTACT: jen@booksforafrica.org Located in Smyrna, Books for Africa collect, sort, ship, and distribute books to students of all ages in Africa. Volunteers sort and pack books according to category and age level. Groups, families or individuals can come to 3 Saturdays of every month. (shifts are 9 11a.m. and 12 2p.m.) If interested, Jen at address above. CHASTAIN PARK CONSERVANCY , CONTACT: ray@chastainparkconservancy.org Volunteer opportunities include planting, landscaping, pruning, maintaining footpaths, and clearing brush. Families or individuals can volunteer on the the volunteer handbook and downloading a volunteer release form to bring with you to give to the project coordinator. First Saturday volunteers meet at the Chastain Park Red Parking Lot at the North end of the park on Powers Ferry Road at 9:00 am for orientation and instructions. No age limits. Wear closed toe shoes. CITY OF REFUGE , CONTACT: volcoord@cityofrefugeatl.org City of Refuge is an organization dedicated to community development efforts that lead to stability and sustainability of the local community in Atlanta. They manage a food kitchen, run children s programs, provide free unlimited health care for low-income individuals, and much more. Eden Village-empowers homeless women and children to attain self Meal Sharing- serving a hot breakfast to friends on the street. Sundays 8:45-10:15 Children s Programs-providing children with educational support. Youth Programs-providing recreational and social opportunities for youth in a safe environment. Compassion Atlanta- provides social services to the needy and disadvantaged.
5 COMPUTERS FOR YOUTH , CONTACT: This organization is a school/community initiative that helps students, teachers, and families in low-income areas harness the power of digital learning. CFY provides Family Learning Workshops to train families in a wide range of digital learning activities, as well as supplying low-income households with home learning centers to support and bolster their children s education at home. Volunteers help families learn basic software operations and give them hands-on experience with their new Home Learning Center. Sign up for either the Saturday morning session or the afternoon session. Each session lasts four hours. Complete the online volunteer from and they will contact you. FEED THE HUNGRY FOUNDATION/ACTION 4 MINISTRIES , CONTACT: Andrea Fowler, VP of Programs afowler@actionsministries.net Action Ministries provides food and educational opportunities to the homeless and working poor in metro Atlanta. Ongoing volunteer opportunities include food service at the Women s Community Kitchen and packing food boxes at Feed the Hungry. FCS URBAN MINISTRIES , CONTACT: FCS is a collective of visionaries and social entrepreneurs, transforming distressed urgan neighborhoods through Christian community development. As a collective, FCS currently has multiple organizations that work together to transform communities. There are over 15 organizations in The Collective, each with unique volunteer opportunities. These ministries range from the Beltline Bike Shop and Charis Community Housing to Green My Hood and Refugee Beads. Visit website for information. FLOOD , CONTACT: Flood provides local missions opportunities for students to live out the Great Commission by loving, serving, and leading others. These volunteer opportunities are for middle and high school students. You can play Bingo with the residents at a nursing home, prepare meals to be delivered, paint walls at a school, and play games with kids at a refugee apartment complex. These are just a few of the many projects to choose from. Projects are listed on their calendar and students can register by completing the registration form online.
6 GENESIS SHELTER ext.224, CONTACT: The Genesis Shelter focuses on homeless newborn babies under six months of age and their families, providing a supportive environment that offers Small groups can bring and serve a meal to residents, help with Playgroup on Monday and Thursday nights, or bring a fun craft to share for Kid s Craft. HANDS ON ATLANTA ; CONTACT: info@handsonatlanta.org Hands on Atlanta meets critical needs through volunteer service and civic 5 your schedule. Hands on Atlanta has done all the work for you by setting or your family. Just click on the project that you are interested in and all the details you need to know are on the page. Select sign up at the bottom with details about your project and directions. HOSEA FEED THE HUNGRY , CONTACT: volunteer@hoseafeedthehungry.com HFTH s mission is to raise public awareness about the problems facing families and individuals in poverty. Putting together meals for the homeless, assembling school supplies for children in need, and sorting through donated clothes are just a few of the areas where students can volunteer. MUST MINISTRIES volunteer center , CONTACT: volunteer@mustminitries.org MUST addresses the basic needs of individuals, families, and children around Atlanta. Hot meals, housing, clothing, employment services, and summer lunch programs for kids are just some of the services they offer. Volunteer opportunities include working in the food pantry, toy shop and clothing closet. All volunteers must go through an orientation. You must will contact you. Children ages can serve if accompanied by a parent or chaperone.
7 PIEDMONT PARK CONSERVANCY x247, CONTACT: Michael Paul coordinator of volunteer services preservation of historic Piedmont Park as a vital urban green space and as a cultural and recreational resource. You can volunteer with the Clean and Green Team and mulch, plant or spread pinestraw to beautify the park. This is a great individual, family or group project for ages 5 and up. Volunteers must register online (note: you are directed to the Hands On Atlanta registration site). PROJECT OPEN HAND Project Open Hand helps to combat hunger and malnutrition in Atlanta by providing healthy meals and nutritional 6instruction. Volunteers package meals, help deliver meals, and work with the Senior health and wellness programs. This is a great project for individuals and families or large groups. Groups can serve Monday through Thursday 9 4; Fridays 9 12; Saturdays and Sundays 9 3. To schedule a volunteer opportunity for your group, simply call volunteer services at the number above. 7 BRIDGES TO RECOVERY , CONTACT: 7bridgestorecovery@gmail.com This ministry was the focus of our Upper School NHS Service project in Spring of Pastor 7 also spoke at US Chapel. Located near school on Plant Atkinson Road, this ministry seeks to serve the lost and broken in Atlanta. They are the rescue team for Jesus. To volunteer, please call or . *Street Outreach every Saturday (rain or shine) groups meet at The Garden (2840 Plant Atkinson Rd) at noon. Teams depart from there and deliver meals to the homeless under the bridges and on the wear closed toe shoes and comfortable clothing. *The Garden every day meals are served for the 125 residents at the Garden. You can help serve lunch or dinner, bring crafts/activities for the residents, help sort donations, etc. Friday nights at 7:00, you can help make the 700 meals that will be delivered on Saturday at the Street Outreach.
8 SALVATION ARMY Their website sends you to a volunteer website called volunteermatch.org where you can click on an icon that represents the ministry you care about and volunteer in that area of interest. Once you choose an area of interest, you will be informed about all the details of that volunteer opportunity. TREES ATLANTA ; CONTACT: Susan Pierce Cunningham - susan@treesatlanta.org Dedicated to protecting Atlanta s forests and creating new green space, Trees Atlanta serves the city by planting, conserving, and educating. Be prepared to play in the dirt! The most popular volunteer activity is their weekly Saturday tree projects just about every Saturday. From 9am-noon, you can volunteer in different neighborhoods for tree planting, tree care, or forest restoration projects. Please Susan Pierce Cunningham if you are interested in scheduling a group.
