1 Liebe Schülerin, lieber Schüler! Dies ist der schriftliche Teil der Abschlussprüfung Englisch für den Mittleren Schulabschluss. Es gibt drei Teile darin, zu denen jeweils mehrere Aufgaben gestellt werden: Teil A: Listening (Hörverstehen) Teil B: Reading (Leseverstehen) Teil C: Writing (Schreiben) Du hast ausreichend Zeit! Die Testzeit beträgt für alle Aufgaben zusammen 105 Minuten. Lies dir bitte jede Aufgabe gründlich durch und bearbeite sie, so gut du kannst. Wenn du mit einer Aufgabe nicht zurechtkommst, gehe zur nächsten über. Besonders in Teil A Listening ist es wichtig, dass du vor dem Anhören der CD-Texte in der schriftlichen Aufgabenstellung zunächst nachliest, was du beim anschließenden Hören herausfinden sollst! Benutze evtl. einen Bleistift, um deine ersten Vermutungen zu kennzeichnen, bevor du nach dem zweiten Hören den Füller nimmst. Für die Teile B und C (Reading/Writing) denke daran, dass du in deinem Wörterbuch nachschlagen kannst, wenn du Wortschatzprobleme hast. In Teil C Writing nimm dir die Zeit, die Schreibaufgabe erst zu planen, dann einen Text zu schreiben und diesen vor dem sauberen Abschreiben zu überprüfen. Nutze die Zeit und überprüfe in der Aufgabenstellung, ob du alle Aspekte bedacht hast. Kontrolliere hinterher noch einmal die sprachliche Richtigkeit. Bitte erst umblättern, wenn du dazu aufgefordert wirst. 3

Read the questions (1-7) and tick ( ) the correct answer (a, b, c or d). Only one answer is correct. There is an example (0) at the beginning. You will hear the recording twice (2x). 6 B B1 Reading Task A summer job in Costa Rica Task: Read the text. Then answer the questions (1-6) below in 1-6 words. There is an example (0) at the beginning. "Samanthaaaaaaaa." I heard someone shouting my name across the river. I wiped my soil-covered hands on my overalls and wandered over to the river to peer through the trees at whoever was shouting to me. It was one of the local lads who worked at the lodge up the road. He tied his horse to a tree and wobbled over the plank we used as a bridge, waving a small piece of paper in his hand. COME QUICKLY PLEASE. TONIO HAS LEFT, WE HAVE AN UNEXPECTED ARRIVAL OF AMERICAN TOURISTS AND YOU ARE THE ONLY PERSON IN THE VILLAGE WHO SPEAKS ENGLISH AND SPANISH AT THE MOMENT. CAN YOU HELP? This was the beginning of my job as a bilingual receptionist and tour guide. As you already know I m Samantha and I ve just finished school. My best friend, Sarah, and I decided to travel abroad to get to know the world outside our little town in Sussex. As we are both interested in ecological stuff we had gone to a tiny village in Guanacaste in Costa Rica in order to gain experience on an organic farm. However, after a few months, our money was running out, so the offer of a part-time job at the local eco-lodge was a blessing. We were offered the part-time position of bilingual receptionist at the eco-lodge but, over time, we were trained as tour guides and accompanied a Spanish-speaking guide on 8- hour horseback tours through the Costa Rican rainforest. We served as the guide s translator for any English-speaking tourists. Eventually, we were taking groups out on our own. The experience gained ultimately opened up whole new career opportunities in different parts of the world as an eco-tour guide. This is a great example of how your knowledge of other languages can sometimes find you the dream job that you might never have found in over a year of trawling every Internet job website. At the beginning of the time in Costa Rica it was really hard for us, because we missed everything our families and friends, the food and even school. But now as we nearly have finished our work here and have to go back, we are sad again, because we ve met a lot of nice people and gained a bunch of new experiences. 8

8 B B2 Reading Task Sailing solo around the world? Task: Read the text and the statements (1-7) below. Are they true, false, or not given in the text? Tick ( ) the correct box. Recently, Dutch authorities put 13-year-old Laura Dekker under state care, after her parents had refused to stop Laura from sailing around the world single handed. She is one of the growing number of young people who have recently sailed or are preparing for a solo trip around the world. This has started a debate about whether teenagers should be allowed to sail around the world unaccompanied. The latest teen to attempt a solo round-the-world voyage, Australian Jessica Watson, set sail from Sydney on the 23,000 mile journey, although the government had told her not to go on this journey. When sixteen-year-old Jessica crashed her boat during a preparation sail, it made headlines. A report said that Watson had been sleeping at the time. Having checked the radar, minutes before crashing, she failed to notice a 63,800 ton ship a mile away. People all over the world are talking about the growing trend of young sailors like Jessica Watson and Laura Dekker who are hoping to sail around the world. "It's a tricky question," Olympic sailing gold medalist Shirley Robertson told CNN, "because sailing has always had that sense of adventure to it and it is a sport for enthusiasts. And some people are just made for that. But at such a young age, how can you know that the person is ready?" So far two teenagers have already broken world records for solo circumnavigation. In 2009, 17-year-old Mike Perham became the youngest person to sail solo around the world. His father, Peter, told CNN that the question should not be about age, but experience. "It's not so much age that's the barrier," he said. "You need a whole set of skills and must be physically fit. And it all depends how quickly you can develop those skills. Mike had already sailed across the Atlantic and that was good preparation. To be honest, he probably couldn't have raised the money if he had been 18 or 23. The sponsorship he received was partly because the attraction was his age." 10

9 Shirley Robertson believes that teenagers are keen on sailing around the world because "there is this feeling that when you're young you can do anything. In adventure sports people think that you have to be the strongest, longest, fastest first. It's part of our culture. But why not get a bit more experience first?" And she added, "As a mother myself, I would say you have to be at least 18. Before that I wouldn't let them go on a round-the-world trip. I would encourage them to do it with other people. As a sailor you learn most from other people." Statements Laura Dekker was placed under state care for two months. People are discussing whether teenagers should go on sailing trips alone.
