This handbook provides guidelines for a wide range of the computer-related issues you may encounter as a faculty or staff member. Please save this handbook for future reference. This handbook is also available at the following link: The CBA Information Technology Consultant (ITC) staff provides computing services/support to CBA students, faculty, and staff. This includes operating the administrative computer systems, maintaining computer laboratories and classrooms, and providing desktop/laptop computer support and training. Information Resources and Technology (IRT) maintains computing information and policies for the CSUS Campus. 3 The CBA ITC Staff The CBA has two Information Technology Consultants (ITC) to answer any information technology questions, Jeff Bingel and Jim Hayes. The ITC offices are located in rooms Tahoe 2085 and Tahoe The ITC maintains CBA servers, Web Page servers, SQL Database servers, file servers, and classroom servers. Primary responsibility and first point of contact is: Primary Secondary Contact: Contact: Desktop Support Jim Jeff Classroom Support Jim Jeff Network Support Jeff Jim Support Jeff Jim Xythos Support Jeff Jim For computer supplies such as toner, paper, disks, and CDs see the Office of the Associate Dean for Faculty. Non-Emergency Work Order Requests Please use the Online Work Order System for all non-emergency computer requests. Using the work order system allows us to track requests and get everything done in a timely manner. Requests made verbally or by regular may be delayed, or forgotten amidst all the other things going on for ITC staff. Start up your web browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape, Firefox, etc.) and go to the web link : and click on the, Work Order Request icon/picture. Fill in the requested information using your Saclink username and password, and click Submit Request at the bottom of the page. Save the link as a Favorite in your web browser. 4 Computer Emergencies The following list describes the emergency situations in which you should page the ITCs: The Classroom/Lab PC or laptop will not turn on or function properly and the class is waiting. You are locked out of your PC and you cannot do any work. You suspect there is a computer virus on your PC. You have to meet a deadline and need help operating your PC or software. In the case of COMPUTER EMERGENCIES only, page: Jeff Jim Use the pager numbers for computer emergencies only! See the above list for definitions of computer emergencies. If your page is not answered within a reasonable amount of time, please contact the Office of the Associate Dean for Faculty at ( from an on-campus phone). Classroom instruction is one of the ITC s top priorities. If you are experiencing problems with a computer in the classroom please contact the CBA ITC or the Office of the Associate Dean for Faculty. Remember the ITC s can only help with computer related problems; if it is a projector problem, remote control problem, furniture, trash, or any other problem you should contact the Office of the Associate Dean for Faculty (ADF). Off-Campus/Home Computer Support Saclink has a 56K modem bank of telephone numbers you can dial into to connect your computer to the internet. For a list of these numbers go to: This service is free, but you have a time limit of 20 hours per week. Due to resource and liability reasons, the CBA ITC s cannot support your home computer, even if it is owned by the university. Please do not call or page us about problems with your home computer, regardless of whether you are using it for work or personal projects. 4 College of Business Administration
5 Establishing an Account 1) Setup a Saclink Account The Sacramento state computer network is called Saclink, and your campus will be routed to your Saclink account. The University encourages everyone to create and use a Saclink account, rather than outside accounts, to facilitate campus communications, including in emergency situations. To create a Saclink account go to and follow the online instructions. For assistance in creating a Saclink account you can call the Saclink Helpdesk at (916) (On-campus phone x87337), them at saclink@csus.edu or visit the Helpdesk in the Academic Information Resource Center, room Once the account is created, you must log in and choose an name (Alias). Several choices of names are available but your last name and first initial (John Doe = Doej) is the preferred choice for ITC purposes. 2) Microsoft Outlook Setup Information: When you log into your new computer account for the first time, you will need to configure your software to get your new . Double click on the yellow Outlook icon and follow these steps: a. Choose Microsoft Exchange Server Computing Information Handbook, Fall
6 b. Under Microsoft Exchange Server type: mapi.saclink.csus.edu and YOUR new username next to the User Name box as indicated below. Click Check Name to verify that the mail server recognizes your username. If it does not, please contact the ITCs. Click Next, then Finish. How to Check on the Internet (Web Based ) You can check your from any web browser (ie. Internet Explorer, Netscape, Firefox, etc.) that has internet access. Go to the CBA home web page at this web link: and choose my cba in the bar across the top, then click on Outlook Access. For information on how to use your online (through the Internet from any off-campus computer) go to the Web page URL below and choose How to Access your home using Outlook Web Access (OWA). 6 College of Business Administration
7 Software & Hardware University site licensed software is available to all faculty and staff on the campus Information Resources and Technology (IRT) website. Please check software.csus.edu for software downloads and availability. Faculty requests for software programs not available through a site license must be submitted to the Office of Associate Dean for Faculty. Hardware purchase requests must also be submitted to the Office of the Associate Dean for Faculty. The request will be evaluated by ITC staff for compatibility with existing CBA hardware before it is approved. Classroom Computers Almost all CBA classrooms have either a computer workstation or laptop interface panel installed. A view of each classroom installation can be seen at the CBA classroom web page link: Additionally, a ceiling mounted computer projector is connected to the PC or laptop interface panel. The username for the classroom PC is instructor, the password is cba. Please make sure all three boxes are correct before clicking enter. Do NOT give this information to students. Students can login with username, student and a blank password. If there is some software you would like installed on the classroom PC s please put in an ITC work order at least 2 weeks in advance. To request software to be installed on the CBA lab computers for student use please submit a work order by July 31 st for the Fall semester, January 1 st for the Spring semester, and May 1 st for Summer. Laptop Computers Most CBA classrooms have a laptop docking station to hookup your laptop to the classroom projector. If you do not have a laptop, the ITC office has a laptop pool that you can checkout a laptop for classroom instruction or university related off campus events. Additionally, a video hookup cable for laptop connection to the projector can be provided. Laptops and/or video hookup cables may be checked out on a daily basis only. This time period may be extended for university related off-campus events. Computing Information Handbook, Fall
8 Xythos Document Sharing The CBA s Xythos document sharing server can be accessed through your web browser (Internet Explorer, Netscape, or Firefox) by going to the following link: and logging in with your CBA Username and Password. This is a great way to share files with other users, or to work on files from your home computer (or classroom computer) providing it has internet access. Unacceptable/Illegal Use of CBA Computers All faculty, staff and students are encouraged to use CBA technology resources to the utmost, but some limitations must be enforced. The downloading and sharing of illegal software is prohibited and will be reported to the Dean s office if detected. All computers as well as the information on them, including , are the property of the university (even if it is personal ). ITC Support Limitations Please keep in mind that our support has limitations, and ITC does not support the following items: Personal computers/laptops located at your home or business. Classroom Projector issues like light bulb burnouts and remote controls (contact UMS at x86918). House Cleaning (trash or dirty classrooms are to be reported to the Associate Dean for Faculty at x85577). Classroom Environmental Issues (AC and Heat Issues, contact ADF at x85577). Moving or providing/replacing furniture (contact ADF at x8577). Personal Web pages (contact Saclink at 8x7337 for faculty web help) Leaving the College As a general CBA practice, faculty or staff discontinuing their employment at the CBA will continue to have access to their computer accounts for 2 weeks after their official last day.
