2 2 NGVs the right model for everybody NGVs get moving: Thanks to a whole new generation of high-performance turboengines, driving an NGV is now not just the sensible thing to do, it s also really fun! Leading manufacturers are putting their trust in new gas-fuelled engines which have excellent acceleration, good ranges and are nevertheless unbeatably environment-friendly. Whether VW, Opel, Fiat, Mercedes, Ford or other car makes, whether mono-fuel vehicles, which only run on CNG, or bi-fuel cars capable of running on two fuels: Anybody who runs a car on CNG makes a good choice. Natural gas takes off Clean, economical, responsive: Attractive vehicles with the latest generation of sporty gas turboengines pack ecology, economy and driving pleasure under the bonnet. Convincing environmental advantages, reasonable purchase and maintenance costs, better ranges and the increasingly dense network of CNG filling stations throughout Germany are best arguments for the NGV. E.ON Ruhrgas is playing its part with innovations in infrastructure and technology. Powering ahead on the global market Worldwide there are over million NGVs on the road and the trend is rising. Every year over million new NGVs are registered worldwide. In Europe alone, more than million NGVs are in service. Outside Europe, most NGVs are to be found in Argentina, Brazil, India, China and the USA and they are now conquering the global market. So many advantages NGVs: internationally established in the market Attractive vehicles thanks to responsive gas turboengines CO 2 reduction: Natural gas meets the goals of a forward-looking energy and climate policy Attractive vehicle types: from small cars to heavy trucks (examples of models) Small cars Light commercial vehicles Minivans Fiat Panda.4 V Natural Power Fiat Punto Evo.4 V Natural Power VW Caddy Ecofuel van Opel Combo. 3 Scirocco R-Cup: Natural gas is also successful in motor sport Pole position for natural gas mobility Reliable, safe, forward-looking: So far over 90,000 NGVs are in operation on German roads. According to the German Energy Agency, this figure will rise to.2 million cars and 0,000 commercial vehicles by Ranges of over 40 km when driven on CNG together with extremely low fuel consumption of less than kg/00 km, with the VW Passat for example, make NGVs particularly attractive. The positions of the fuel tanks are as varied as the NGVs themselves. In trucks, the tanks are mounted under the loading platform; in buses, a roof tank means no loss of space in the interior. With cars, the tanks are either located in the boot/load area or as a particularly space-saving alternative under the vehicle. E.ON Ruhrgas is researching into the latest generation of tanks, which, as combined pressure and adsorption storage tanks (ANG storage), are to double the storage capacity compared with conventional cylinder tanks and therefore again increase the space in the interior and the range of NVGs. 4 4 Nationwide filling station network Fill up and only pay half as much: Natural gas has good environmental qualities and is also cheaper than all other automotive fuels. Lower price and significantly reduced fuel tax rate: Throughout Germany, natural gas was only half the price of petrol in Due to the favourable CO 2 balance, investing in an NGV is also worth while from the low vehicle tax aspect. CNG filling stations in Germany There are currently some 900 filling stations in Germany. This makes Germany No. in Europe. And the network is steadily expanding. The energy companies, above all E.ON Ruhrgas, are systematically working on creating a nationwide infrastructure for natural gas mobility. E.ON companies operate more than 0 CNG filling stations in urban and rural areas throughout Germany. E.ON Gas Mobil alone already operates 0 of the roughly 200 CNG filling stations on German motorways and will be further expanding the motorway filling station network in the years to come. Thanks to this extensive infrastructure, natural gas in conjunction with biomethane is already making a significant contribution to environmentally benign road traffic. 5 Refuelling safely and conveniently Refuelling with CNG is child s play: Just attach the nozzle and that s it. Thanks to a well-designed system of standardised pump and nozzle fittings, refuelling is safe and easy to handle. And it hardly takes any longer than refuelling with petrol or diesel. A further advantage is that when you refuel with CNG no unpleasantly smelling vapours can escape. With natural gas in your tank you save money Natural gas mobility is worth while: Thanks to its convincing environmental benefits, the fuel tax rate on natural gas as an automotive fuel is lower than on other fuels. And this lower rate is long term it will apply until at least 20. Particularly in view of rising petrol and diesel prices, natural gas mobility is therefore unbeatably economical. With natural gas, fuel costs are cut by more than 0% compared with petrol (compared with diesel the saving is more than %). The CNG pump price is roughly 99 cent/kg (H-gas). If energy content is compared, that is equivalent to an average petrol price of cent/l and a diesel price of cent/l. By the way, CNG at the filling pump is charged in kilograms instead of litres, one kilogram of natural gas (H-gas) being roughly equivalent to. litres of petrol. There s no more economical way of driving With natural gas, you do not just save at the filling pump and cut emissions but also save resources. Natural gas will be reliably available for many decades. And feeding regenerative bio-methane into the network even makes it the fuel of the future: renewable energy, permanently available. Distance covered on 0 of fuel in km CNG 2 LPG Diesel Petrol Source: erdgas mobil (200), comparison of fuel costs taking the example of an Opel Zafira CNG filling station: The main components of a CNG filling station are compressor (), high-pressure storage tank (2), piping and fuel pump (). A standard facility can refuel some 0 to 0 cars and light commercial vehicles. 2
6 The way forward in environmental protection Clean, quiet, cheap to run: The use of natural gas as an automotive fuel is revolutionising the motoring world. NGVs are not only cheaper to run and quieter than conventional cars, they also emit much fewer pollutants. Natural gas lessens the environmental impact Natural gas as an automotive fuel can, in conjunction with the use of biomethane, help reduce the impact of road traffic on the environment. NGVs emit virtually no soot particles CO 2 emissions are considerably reduced (by about 2% compared with petrol) much fewer pollutants (NO X, SO 2, unburned hydrocarbons etc.) reduction of the ozone and particulate matter problems in urban areas use of biomethane cuts CO 2 emissions even further With natural gas into the future Natural gas is the bridge to renewables and the fuel cell. Therefore, low-emission gas-fuelled vehicles have special significance for the achievement of the European climate goals. Natural gas is the way forward. This is how biomethane is produced Energy plants, e.g. grass or maize Animal husbandry Liquid animal manure or dung Fermented residues are used as fertilizer. This reduces the use of mineral fertilizers considerably Receiving cesspit Collecting tank for biomass Fermenter In this container the biomass is decomposed by anaerobic bacteria in the absence of light and oxygen. Biogas forms in this fermenting process Gas storage facility The biogas formed is stored in the dome of the fermenter, directly over the fermenting biomass CO 2 reduction through the use of natural gas/biomethane in % 00 Gas processing plant The methane content and quality of the biogas are increased to raise it to the natural gas quality in the pipeline system Natural gas pipeline network The treated biomethane can be fed directly into existing natural gas networks and transported to the filling stations 0 Biomethane Source: dena Petrol Diesel CNG CNG + Biomethane 20 % biomethane
7 What you should know about natural gas as an automotive fuel In 2009, no other alternative type of drive was so much in demand with purchasers of new vehicles. According to the German Department of Motor Vehicles (KFA), there were more than 2,000 new NGV registrations last year. Are more frequent TÜV inspections required for NGVs? No, NGVs are treated in the same way as conventional vehicles. Does servicing cost more for an NGV? Normally not, depending on the manufacturer, service checks are performed at the regular service intervals. How high is the resale value of mass-produced NGVs? Thanks to the increasing demand for used vehicles, the resale value of mass-produced vehicles is good according to DAT (Deutsche Auto Treuhand). Dedicated sites on the Internet make it easier to resell NGVs. What exhaust gas standard do NGVs meet? All current new CNG-fuelled cars meet the Euro 4 or the Euro standard, which enters into force on January 20. Then stricter limits apply to nitrogen oxides and soot particles. The particularly strict Euro standard, which will apply from 20, is already met. What is the engine behaviour in CNG and petrol modes? With most newly developed and CNG-optimised massproduced vehicles, performance is the same in both CNG and petrol modes, in some cases even better in CNG mode. Is the boot smaller with a CNG-fuelled vehicle? Yes and no, only retrofitted vehicles lose some space in the interior due to the retrofitting of gas cylinders. With new mass-produced vehicles, however, there is no loss of space in the interior because of the underfloor tanks. What is the current situation with regard to filling stations? There are already some 900 filling stations currently in operation. The infrastructure is being continually expanded and conveniently located stations integrated in the network. What about insurance for NGVs? As far as insurance is concerned, NGVs are generally treated in the same way as any conventional vehicle. Some insurance companies even offer lower premiums for vehicles with alternative drives. How is an NGV classified when it comes to vehicle tax? The new emissions-based vehicle tax in Germany is calculated according to the type of drive, the cubic capacity and the CO 2 emissions of the particular vehicle. Depending on the model, NGVs emit about 2 % less carbon dioxide and are therefore put in a category with a lower tax rate. Are NGVs allowed to use an underground car park? Yes, in Germany you can drive an NGV into any underground car park. The same positive regulations apply in all the different German states. However, the car park owner can decide not to allow NGVs to use his car park. The reason for this is nearly always ignorance of the facts.
