1 EXECUTIVE OVERVIEW OF THE CLOUD, FOR THE CLOUD The State of the Art in IT Performance Management IT performance management tools are following application and infrastructure workloads to the cloud, giving users lightweight, low-overhead monitoring services for modern distributed workloads. This report examines these emerging technologies, as well as their differentiators, their target market segments and their drawbacks. KEY FINDINGS The cloud continues to emerge as the deployment option of choice for performance management tools that monitor and manage modern Web applications and the distributed environments that support them. This shift is being driven by cloud adoption itself as more applications are deployed in the cloud or consume cloud services. Enterprises, managed service providers and other SaaS vendors are turning to modern cloud-based management tools as the easiest and best way to manage these applications. Cloud spending will increase by 37% in the next six months, according to our latest ChangeWave Corporate Cloud Computing Trends report. SaaS accounts for 72% of overall cloud usage, and spending on SaaS will increase by 32% over the next six months. While security concerns remain the largest single obstacle to cloud adoption, a number of performance issues also registered on 451 Research s recent Cloud Wave 5 Study. These include service-level management, service availability/reliability, network concerns, and limited transparency and management. We feel that these issues will continue to create pull for IT performance management as-a-service offerings. The devops trend, which bridges application development and IT operations, goes hand-inhand with this phenomenon as developers seek to deploy Web applications in the cloud and turn to APM tools that were built to monitor and manage these applications. The most vibrant sector in cloud-based performance management tools comprises those APM tools that cater to the devops user. DECEMBER 2013
