2 2 Perspectives STEM Employment in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) related careers is expected to increase by 13 percent through 2012 to 2022, according to the U.S. Department of Labor, or faster than the average for all careers. One million new STEM jobs are expected during this time span. It s an exciting time to work in careers whether you re designing state-of-the-art medical technology, using algorithms and financial software to predict financial market outcomes, solving engineering challenges as you build a road through a mountain range, studying the San Cristobal mockingbird and other endangered species in the Galapagos Islands, or working in a variety of other professions. Quote Too many students and adults are training for jobs in which labor surpluses and demand is low, while high-demand jobs, particularly those in STEM fields, go unfilled. Americans often complain of short vacations and long hours on the job and, while this is true for many U.S. workers data collected by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development shows that workers in many countries work for more hours per year than American workers (who labored an average of 1,788 hours in 2013). In Mexico, the average worker toiled 2,237 hours a year - earning less than a fifth of the pay of a typical U.S. worker. Here are other countries with the most annual working hours: South Korea (2,163 Hours), Greece (2,037 hours), Chile (2,015 hours), Russia (1,980 Hours), Poland (1,918 hours), Hungary (1,883 hours), Estonia (1,868), Israel (1,867), Turkey (1,832), and Ireland (1,815).
