Valkenburg is Distinguished research professor in the Amsterdam School of Communication Research ASCoR, and director of CCAM The Center of Research on Children, Adolescents, and the media. Her research interests include children's development as media consumers, and the cognitive, emotional, and social effects of media and technologies on children and adolescents. Valkenburg received her MSc (1992, cum laude) and PhD (1995, cum laude) from Leiden University. In 2003 she was awarded an NWO-Vici grant, and in 2010 an ERC Advanced Investigator grant. She has published 100+ peer-reviewed articles, 5 solo-authored books, and 33 book chapters. In 2006, she was recognized as the most productive communication scientist in Europe. In 2011, she was awarded the Spinoza award, which is the highest scientific award in the Netherlands. Valkenburg is a member of the Royal Netherlands Academy of Sciences. Valkenburg is the founder and chair of CCAM, which currently hosts 23 researchers from nine social and behavioral sciences. Together with CCAM researchers, Valkenburg has received 14 competitive grants and awards that together amount to 10 million euro. CCAM has been recognized as one of the best research centers in the world (e.g., Qanu, 2008). In September 2010, Valkenburg and her colleagues Jochen Peter and Moniek Buijzen initiated a well-evaluated international MA-program Youth and Media. Valkenburg is a member of the board of the Social Science Division (MaGW) of the Netherlands Organization for Scientific research (NWO). She is associate editor of Human Communication Research and a member of the editorial boards of five other journals in her field. In 2008, she founded the first international academic division Children, Adolescents, and the Media within the International Communication Association. This division now hosts about 280 international researchers focusing on youth and the media. 1
