2 Department History Professional Grooming and Animal Care (formally Pet Grooming) began in Veterinary Assistant program was added in 2004 to the newly formed Animal Studies department. Moved into the newly built Northwest Campus building in Veterinary Technology Phase 1 agreement with TCTC began in the summer of Animal Studies building built in This houses the Vet Tech program and the grooming lab facilities.

6 Animal Studies Department Goal The goal of the Animal Studies department is to provide quality education for our students.

7 Professional Grooming and Animal Care The Professional Grooming and Animal Care program strives to teach students how to respectfully care for and groom pets while providing quality care, showing compassion, integrity, and continuing to further their education throughout their career.

8 Veterinary Assistant The Veterinary Assistant program s goal is to educate students in the veterinary field in order to properly assist veterinarians as well as to be loyal to the welfare of animals by providing excellent care, alleviating animal suffering, and educating the community. In addition, to devote their self to a commitment of lifelong learning and progress to become a competent and worthy Veterinary Assistant.

9 Professional Grooming and Animal Care This program trains students in the art of pet grooming. Graduates gain employment in retail grooming salons as well as starting their own grooming business.

Groomers take grooming to the next level in competitions and creative grooming. This is an artistic craft. 15 Veterinary Assistant Program Trains students to assist a technologist and veterinarian in a medical setting. Graduates obtain job opportunities in veterinary offices, hospitals, specialty offices, and shelters.

16 Veterinary Assistant Those that enjoy medical setting. Enjoy working with animals. Numerous career opportunity settings available to graduates. Industry of veterinary medicine is growing and the need for trained assistants is strong. Assistant s duties may vary depending upon veterinarian, assistant s skill level, and practice size. Graduates can choose whether to work at a practice that specializes in small breeds, farm animals, exotics, wildlife, or specialty medicine. There is the ability to grow within the industry.

21 Veterinary Technology Phase I This is Phase 1 of Tri County Technical College s Veterinary Technology program. Pre-veterinary technology Phase 1 is the first year in this associate degree program.

22 Veterinary Technology Phase I A challenging career working with animals. Appeals to those interested in the veterinary medical field. Graduates continue their education and complete Phase 2 at TCTC. After completion of Phase 1 and 2 graduates are expected to take state and national licensing exams. Successful completion of licensing exams provides title of LVT. LVT enjoy careers within veterinary offices, hospitals, specialty practices, shelters, wildlife sanctuaries, zoos, farms and research labs. This is a growing industry and the need for licensed LVT in our area is strong.

23 Salary Expectations Dependant upon level of education, experience, size and location of business One of the top 20 fastest growing occupations where education makes a difference Average salary $20,000 - $38,000 (AS degree) Average salary $33,000 - $42,500 (BS degree)

24 Veterinary Technology Phase I Basics Phase 1 is 2 semesters (core classes) Phase 1 is part of the TCTC Veterinary Technology associate degree program. Phase 1 consists of 41 credit hours. Offered full time, day only at this time. Admission is determined by weighted admission (competitive entry). Physically and academically demanding program.

25 Important: Start Date! Per the AVMA requirements, students must complete the Associate s degree in 3 years if they are a full time student and in 4 ½ years if they are a part time student. Part time or full time status is determined by Tri-County Technical College once students begin Phase 2. Courses with the VET synonym within the Associate s degree, including pre-requisites, are calculated into these timeframes. You have established your official start date once enrolled in VET 103 or VET 105.
