2 2 Perspectives Here s Why Tests Matter Source: Wall Street Journal, by Pierson & Riles; 3/30/16 & The College Connection Newsletter May/June 2016 Earlier this month, students for the first time took a new, and allegedly improved, SAT. The test s developer included non-contemporary vocabulary and removed penalties for guessing the wrong answer. The changes came with a predictable outcry, with a familiar refrain from parents: Why do we have this exam at all? Why do colleges put so much stock in the results? It appears that there s a simple reason for this emphasis on testing: Policy makers and educators are effectively eliminating other ways of quantifying student performance. Classroom grades have become meaningless. Figures for the U.S. Education Department show that between 1990 and 2009, high school graduates mean GPA rose 0.32 points even while their ACT and SAT scores remained the same. Even at the university level, it seems that faculty has decided that grades don t matter. The director of the Yale Journalism Initiative wrote an Op-Ed a few weeks ago in the Washington Post titled There s Nothing Wrong with Grade Inflation. A recent headline in the Chronicle of Higher Education asks Why Do Colleges Still Use Grades? Alfie Kohn, the author of several books on restructuring education, has concluded that grades poison everything they touch, undermining intrinsic motivation to learn and warping the whole classroom dynamic. But eliminating grades simply kicks the problem of evaluating students upstairs to graduate school or employers. Grades are increasingly a lousy signal, a sociologist explained, especially at those elite places that just hand out the A s. Standardized tests, for all their faults, are the only thing left to judge students by. It Bears Repeating Teenagers, How about becoming a volunteer this summer? With the number of internships offered to college students expected to drop by 21% in the coming years, volunteer opportunities are becoming a key way for high school and college students to gain experience and try out career paths. About 3.3 million college students volunteered in 2005, according to College Students Helping America, a report from the Corporation for National Community Service. It may be a personally rewarding experience and it could lead to an interesting topic on which to develop a college application essay. 3 3 Summer Advice to prospective college students: Read a book a week this summer. Develop your own reading list. Start with an area of interest and definitely include a novel. If you are unable to develop a reading list, go to your local library and ask the librarian. Librarians are terrific sources of interesting reading advice. Develop a love of reading which will be the most positive step that one can take to achieve academic success in college. If presented with the option of taking a SAT Prep Course or taking a Reading/Speed Reading Course, no brainer, take the Speed Reading Course. It will have lasting benefits wherever you matriculate.
