Transportation Trends minutes spent commuting million residents in the GTHA 3
The Cost $6 billion travel costs + lost productivity These costs will double in the next 30 years if we don t improve our transportation. 4
The Cost- Environment Over 500,000 tonnes/year in Greenhouse Gases (GHG) is due to traffic congestion That means 15% of daily emissions is due to excess traffic congestion. 5
The Cost- Social Impacts 82 minutes/day average time a driver spends commuting Average times each person spends commuting could increase to 109 minutes per day in next 25 years. 6
Metrolinx, an agency of the Government of Ontario under the Metrolinx Act, 2006, was created to improve the coordination and integration of all modes of transportation in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA). Three Operating Divisions GTHA: o 8,242 km2 o 6 million people o 4 levels of government o 30 municipalities o 10 transit agencies 7
Increase the percentage of people living within 2km of rapid transit to 81% Reduce commute times to an average of 77 minutes per person per day Triple the length of rapid transit service in GTHA to 1,725km Decrease Greenhouse Gas emissions from passenger transportation per person by 29% 8
Current Projects Underway 52km New light rail transit 8.6km New subway extension 59km New rapid bus transit

Technology- PRESTO Fare Card Today we have over 540,000 PRESTO users who are able to do this. We re already working on the next generation of PRESTO, adding functionality and convenience such as open payment. PRESTO is one strategy in The Big Move and is an important part of achieving a truly integrated transit system that makes it easier for riders to get to their destinations. 11
Technology- Customer Communications GO Mobile App smart phone applications provide information about train and bus departures, schedules, service updates and arrival alerts for GO Transit services GO Tracker, a website that provides real-time, dynamic data on the GO Train location and status. It allows customers to see all train departures from their preferred GO station. Regional Transit Traveler Information System brings together various traveler information components into one information system 12
Technology- GO Transit Intellitrain alerts the control centre when there are any abnormal conditions with a locomotive All double deck buses are equipped with geofencing technology that triggers an alarm if the bus goes on an unsafe route The dispatch office can also slow down and stop the bus remotely 13
Technology- CAD/AVL (Computer Aided Dispatch/Automatic Vehicle Location) Service status and next bus information for our customers on various digital channels (mobile devices, online, interactive voice response system over the phone, electronic signs, etc.) Audio/visual next stop announcements on our trains and buses Improved communications between bus drivers and operations control centre, improved connections between trains and buses, enhanced service planning. 14
Innovation- Union Station Train Shed Renewal 2012 Canadian Architect Award for Excellence The central area of the train shed roof is 5,000 squaremetres, and will be replaced with a glass atrium. Stair enclosures will be upgraded to glass structures, except at platform 12/13 where heritage features will be carefully restored to their original finish The roof will feature an environmentally friendly green roof with solar panels to generate electricity which will light the station and power elevators, passenger information signs and public address systems.
Innovation- Electric Vehicles Four electric vehicles are available for staff as part of a pilot project Produce no point source emissions Reduce fuel consumption and maintenance costs Metrolinx has also issued a Request for Proposals and begun preliminary work to install charging facilities for public use at 10 GO Transit stations 16

Principles to Guide New Funding Dedicated Revenue The public can see exactly what they are paying for and have an assurance that funds are not diverted to other priorities Fairness in Costs and Benefits Distributes costs to everyone who benefits, recognizing that we all benefit from transportation infrastructure Equity across the Region Ensures that no part of the region is left behind by having all areas pay their fair share and benefit from investment Transparency and Accountability Ensures transparency in administering funds and reporting on results 23
Recommended Investment Tools Recommended Investment Tools 24
Achieving Equity Across the Region The Big Move builds a regional system to support an integrated regional economy; we all benefit from an effective system At same time, need to provide equity across the region: About 41% of funds generated in the 416 area, and 42% of investments made in the 416 area About 59% of funds generated in the 905 area, and 58% of investments made in the 905 area Does not include development charges or the Partnership Initiative 25
To build smart cities we will need dedicated investment GTHA is one of world s great urban regions Our transportation system has been holding us back We have an opportunity to turn this around Investment Strategy gives us the opportunity to make SMART decisions on how to invest: In our future In our economy In our quality of life 26
