5 Rationale/background of project development Health indicators Quantifiable characteristics of a population used as supporting evidence for describing the health of a population e.g. life expectancy, prevalence rate of diabetes In BC, health authorities and local decision makers depend on reliable health indicator data to plan effective and targeted programs and policies 5

7 Concept BC Community Health Atlas project evolved through an iterative process Partnership of PHSA with the Ministry of Health, BC Stats, DataBC, and Island Health Web-based, interactive mapping tool that provides user-friendly access to reliable data Over 200 indicators related to community health and well-being Tool for local, regional, and provincial planning and decision making 7

9 Architecture Internet Mapping Framework 2 (IMF2) Utilizes ArcGIS Server and Geocortex Essentials to provide a rich tool set for users on multiple viewer platforms (i.e Silverlight or HTML 5) - Connects to British Columbia Geographic Warehouse - Includes a middleware component to provide dynamic layers and layer level security - 9
