The Nippon Foundation / GEBCO Postgraduate Certificate in Ocean Bathymetry Training Program at the Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping, University of New Hampshire Dr Rochelle Wigley Project Director Nippon Foundation GEBCO projects Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping, University of New Hampshire [email protected] Amon K. Kimeli, MSc Research Officer Kenya Marine & Fisheries Research Institute [email protected]
What is the General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans(GEBCO)? Aims to provide the most authoritative, publicly-available comprehensive bathymetric datasets for the world s oceans from the deepest basins to the coast
GEBCO History His Serene Highness Prince Albert I of the Principality of Monaco ( ) offered to finance the production of the first General Bathymetric Chart of the Oceans in April 1903
1905: Ed sheets (1:10 million at the equator) 18,400 points : Ed. 2 30,000 points : Ed ,400 points : Ed. 4 (never completed) : Ed. 5 (Improved by inclusion of sounding controls where discrete soundings appear as grey dots and echo-sounding tracks as grey lines)
GEBCO s products FREELY-AVAILABLE bathymetric data sets and products: Global gridded bathymetric data sets (hosted by BODC) Global set of digital bathymetric contours Gazetteer of Undersea Feature Names GEBCO Digital Atlas GEBCO world map Web Map Service (WMS) IHO-IOC GEBCO Cook Book
What is new in GEBCO-2014 The grid is a continuous terrain model for ocean and land with a spatial resolution of 30 arc seconds Associated with GEBCO Source Identifier (SID) Grid information on ship measurement vs. interpolated depths) GEBCO Sub-Committee on Undersea Feature Names (SCUFN) digital gazetteer of the names, is available via a webmap application (IHO DCDB hosted by NCEI)
QUESTION: Where should GEBCO head into the future? Multiple approaches to looking at this question: 1. Understanding needs of international community 2. Understanding what GEBCO community thinks about its future 3. Building capacity to reach these objectives
Capacity-building initiative: postgraduate training course The Postgraduate Certificate in Ocean Bathymetry (PCOB) Designed to train a new generation of scientists and hydrographers in ocean bathymetry is funded by: The Nippon Foundation of Japan and taught at: The Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping / Joint Hydrographic Center; University of New Hampshire, USA
Nippon Foundation Charitable organization since 1962 that has a central goal to help build a society where all people support one another Guiding Principles: * Discover * Prioritize * Be creative * * Do it now * Be open * Grow * * Expand networks * THE FUTURE OF OUR OCEAN 1 of 8 main activity focuses 10 funded programs under this banner in 2015
Center for Coastal and Ocean Mapping / Joint Hydrographic Center of the University of New Hampshire RESEARCH THEMES: Development that supports the concept of map once use many times i.e., integrated coastal and ocean mapping Improving the sensors New approaches to data processing New approaches for visualization of data Tools and approaches for the adaptation of technologies (benthic habitats / water-column) Innovative approaches and concepts for the electronic chart of the future and e-navigation National leaders in Bathymetric data for potential US LOS submissions
Capacity-building Nippon Foundation initiative: / GEBCO GEBCO training Scholars program: scholars from 33 coastal states over last 11 years
Amon Kimeli His perspective as a Year 11 (2014/2105) Alumni 60 scholars from 31 Coastal states
1.5% of Indian Ocean covered by publicly-available MBES data
Why do we need bathymetry data? An accurate knowledge of the shape and depth of the seafloor has numerous applications: Safety of Navigation: In January 2005 USS San Francisco (SSN-711), a US nuclear submarine collided with a unmapped seamount ~ 675 kilometers (364 nautical miles) SE of Guam at a depth of 160 m Scientific and academic research: Tectonic and ocean current models Geohazard modelling and mitigation: Tsunami-propagation and storm surge models Sustainable Resource Management: Fisheries-resource management, aquaculture, petroleum and mineral exploration, renewable energy resources Environmental Stewardship: Habitat monitoring, national heritage, management of marine protected areas

Nippon Foundation / GEBCO Training program Students MUST also undertake a working visit NOAA NGDC offices in Boulder, CO another research organization (s), and/or a research cruise over the summer NOAA Chart adequacy workshop Lab visit selected by student and home organization - in a related and relevant field of interest NOAA NATIONAL GEOPHYSICAL DATA CENTER
Nippon Foundation / GEBCO Training program Qualifications attainable: GEBCO Postgraduate certificate in Ocean Bathymetry UNH Graduate Certificate in Ocean Mapping FIG/IHO/ICA Category A hydrography
Strengths Combines both theory (science and technology) and practicals (field work). Networking amongst GEBCO scholars, Alumni and CCOM graduates significantly from NOAA and other USA govt. agencies Interacting with academic, scientific and business leaders at CCOM, UNH and through lab visits, internships and other GEBCO meetings
Success of GEBCO program Acknowledge ongoing support of Nippon Foundation for GEBCO training project and other special projects In regular communication with ~95% of graduates 1. Selection process that improves each year 2. Global distribution and network of ocean mappers 3. Ongoing involvement of Scholars within GEBCO and GEBCO projects
Indian Ocean Bathymetric Compilation Project
Shallow-water bathymetry initiative: Regional mapping contribution: Improving GEBCO s global grid
Teaching Tool KMFRI provided with dataset that they could not read or display with no metadata associated and so no idea on information they had on shelf morphology
CROWD-SOURCED BATHYMETRY: Sea-ID Super Yacht Project
Crowd Sourced Bathymetry Background: Expand the current IHO super yachting pilot project to include and test the CSB concept with a wider spectrum of mariners A GEBCO pilot project was discussed at Joint IHO-IOC Guiding Committee for GEBCO from 13 to 15 June 2014 at IHB At EIHC met with SEA ID, GEBCO and NHC and scope of pilot project discussed and agreed upon Terengganu Miri TB SUTRA 1 Sabah Sumatra / Sumatera MV AISHAH AIMS 2 MV AISHAH AIMS 3 Kalimantan Loggers were successfully installed on board MV Aishah AIMS 2, MV Aishah AIMS 3 in Kuala Terengganu on Peninsular Malaysia & TB SUTRA 1 in Miri, Sarawak. from 19th to 23rd January 2015.
Crowd Sourced Bathymetry LESSONS LEARNT: Some information on metadata and setup essential Need to simplify hardware for easier installation and data retrieval not all vessels have technology of super-yachts Explore whether this technology can be adapted for fishing industry? Data must be made publically-available and exploring ways to do this through GEBCO and IHO-DCDB Cannot assume all vessels adopt good practices
Where to next? The Future of the Ocean Floor Forum A Nippon Foundation - IHO/IOC GEBCO Forum June 15 17, 2016 (Principality of Monaco) Aim: Understand role of GEBCO in next 10 years and into the future What is required of global data sets and what do users need How must GEBCO grow and meet these requirement
