3 Brochure M.Sc. in Accountancy Accountancy is the language of business, and at the UoC you can be part of the conversation. The University of Curaçao, Dr. Moises da Costa Gomez (UoC) in conjunction with Rijksuniversiteit Groningen (RUG) offers a Master in Accountancy. This Master in Accountancy is designed to provide students with critical thinking and problem-solving skills, as well as the knowledge base to prepare for professional practice within the field of Accountancy and Controlling. Get on track for your professional qualification as "Registeraccountant" (RA) or a Certified Public Accountant(CPA) or Registercontoller (RC) and take advantage of the growing demand for accountants and controllers in the non-profit, public sector and corporate world

4 Curriculum M.Sc. in Accountancy This one and a half year program consists of 8 modules and a graduation thesis. Each module typically covers about six weeks of lectures, presentation, papers and a final exam. 5 Curriculum M.Sc. in Controlling In the one and a half year of the Controlling program, the courses Financial Accounting Theory, Financial Auditing I, and Financial Auditing II are replaced with the following courses: Management Accounting Change, Management Accounting Techniques, Corporate Finance and Research in Management Control. The tuition must be paid in full prior to the program start. There are competitive financing possibilities through Stichting Studiefinanciering Curaçao (SSC) and local bank(s). 5

6 Admission Admission to the Master in Accountancy and Controlling program is possible with: A Bachelor of Science degree in Auditing of the UoC or any other recognized university. A HBO Business Administration (BE)/Accountancy (AC) diploma with a premaster in Accounting. Bachelor in Controlling with a premaster in Accounting. Bachelor in Business Administration with a premaster in Accounting Schedule Classes will be in principle on Tuesday and Thursday from hours The four intensive week sessions with international lecturers will be from Monday until Friday from hours. The schedule may be subject to change. The instruction languages are English and/or Dutch. Accreditation The UoC offers a M.Sc. in Acountancy program that is positively assessed by one of the most respected accreditation bodies: the NVAO (Nederlands Vlaams Accreditatie Organisatie). Furthermore, through the cooperation agreement between the UoC and the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen (RUG), the RUG is assigned with among others guarding the overall quality of the program. 6

7 Graduation To graduate students need to complete all course requirements and write a graduation thesis on a topic related to their Master. Students graduating for the M.Sc in Controlling need to complete a graduation thesis on a topic regarding business economics ( bedrijfseconomie ). Students graduating for the M.Sc in Accountancy need to complete a graduation thesis on a topic related to one of the main courses in Accountancy: Internal Control, Financial Reporting, Financial Auditing, and Corporate Governance. 8 Course descriptions Accounting courses Financial Auditing 1 Overview: By using literature and practical cases, the theoretical foundations of auditing will be discussed. Furthermore application of theory will be dealt with on the basis of practice-oriented cases. Financial Auditing II Overview: Auditing II builds on the knowledge acquired during Auditing I and provides a more theoretical deepening. This is realized by several thematic points of view. These are amongst others: behavior (as well with respect to the organization as to the auditor), culture and (developments in) society. Financial Accounting Theory Overview: The course will deal with scientific research and the different phases of the empirical cycle. Whenever possible, the theory acquired will be linked to the reporting practice. Because of the increasing importance of the standard setting process for companies and their accountants, attention will be paid to the theories on which this process is based. Subjects to be dealt with include an introduction to various reporting theories external reporting under ideal circumstances the user approach of external reporting implications of efficient markets the use of information for the functioning of capital markets agency theory and its consequences for the structure of external reporting earnings management. Internal Control: Risk Management Overview: Enterprise Risk Management is a concept aimed at controlling the risks related to organizational goals. In this respect, the concept of Enterprise Risk Management is a key component of the theory and practice of corporate governance since it affects the 8

9 predictability of results and thus contributes to a decrease in uncertainty for supervisors and investors and therefore to value creation. This course will deal with the broad concept of Enterprise Risk Management and the theoretical models. Strategy & organization Overview: This course elaborates upon the impact of strategic decision making and the (financial) viability of the firm. State-of-art strategic concepts are discussed and exercised. Furthermore, the organizational implications are canvassed. Internal Control: Information System Design (OBIS) Overview: Internal Control focuses on how organizations manage the achieving of goals and provide reliable information on this. The lectures and cases will also focus on specific questions concerning internal control. Theoretical concepts that will be examined include internal control framework/enterprise risk management framework/typology model and various articles. In the cases, the design of internal management systems and the analysis of relevant control issues will be emphasized. International Taxation Overview: The goal of this course is to provide the students with a general knowledge of the various tax systems and generate a proposal for a paper with a topic in fiscal law. Advanced research Overview: The goal of this course is to prepare students in the Master of Science in Accountancy program sufficiently to later independently conduct a master thesis under the guidance of a thesis advisor.. 9

10 Course descriptions Controlling Courses Management Accountancy Change Overview: This course aims to provide knowledge and an understanding of change processes implicated in new accounting techniques and systems. The course will deal with both the technical requirements of accounting change and with its social consequences. The change in question will be discussed from two angles: structure and behavior. Structure refers to the structural changes required in the design of organizations as well as the requirements for the factual knowledge level of staff members to work with new accounting instruments. Behavior concerns the ways in which staff members, within their social group, deal with changing responsibilities and activities as well as with the requirements for functioning. The course concentrates on formal and informal means to embed a management accounting system in daily practice. Corporate Financing Overview: This course extends your knowledge from your introduction to finance or financial management of your bachelor program. You apply the core principles from finance to a valuation case from the corporate finance practice. Research in Management Control Overview: The course elaborates on the knowledge gained during previous courses on management accounting (although for some students this course may be a first introduction to the field). 10

11 The objective of the course is to gain a further understanding of the operation and purpose of management accounting and control instruments. The tools provided by management accounting are studied in a context of the managerial control of organizations. After following the course, students should be able to: identify the purpose of accounting systems in different situations and understand how they influence the organization's planning, control and decision making, identify and analyze control problems in organizations, use and critically analyze the various quantitative techniques (also in relation to more qualitative management control instruments), design, select, and appraise accounting instruments of organizations, and analyze and present research papers on management accounting and control.
