1 Software Announcement April 17, 2001 IBM AIX Performance Toolbox for POWER Version 3.0 Obtain and Analyze System Data; IBM AIX Fast Connect for POWER Version 3.1 Enhanced Systems Management Overview AIX Performance Toolbox (PTX) for POWER Version 3.0 enables you to monitor, analyze, and tune system performance in distributed environments. Hundreds of performance metrics and a suite of customizable GUIs are available. An administrator can: View the exact state of the system and tune parameters accordingly Pinpoint immediate or long-term bottlenecks with built-in analysis tools combined with 2- and 3-dimensional graphing capabilities Generate customized reports based on hourly, daily, weekly, or monthly activity In conjunction with the Performance AIDE, you can use PTX to: Visualize live performance concurrently on multiple systems Create 24 x 7 recordings of large sets of performance metrics Filter data based on user-customized criteria Filtering criteria can be used to generate events to a monitoring console or execute administration scripts. Additional utilities help you convert recorded data into formats suitable for import by third-party spreadsheets. An administrator can add tools to menus, either with fixed parameters to match specific situations or in a dialog window. The outputs from these tools can be saved for later review. PTX is designed to support the analysis of network, filesystem, memory, and process activity on IBM pseries and RS/6000 platforms. AIX Fast Connect for POWER Version 3.1 delivers outstanding performance and attractive price for any number of Windows clients. Using Fast Connect, PCs can take advantage of the performance, scalability, and reliability of AIX. Multiple PC servers can be consolidated onto a single, scalable IBM pseries or RS/6000, to reduce system complexity and simplify systems management. Fast Connect is internationalized, which includes messages in 26 languages supported by AIX and Unicode capability to support international characters in file and directory names and other character strings. With Fast Connect, AIX file and print services are available to Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, and Windows 2000 users as part of their Network Neighborhood with no additional software required. Windows clients can access AIX files using the Journaled File System (JFS), JSF2, CD File System (CDFS), Network File System (NFS) mounted subsystems, and DCE/DFS file systems, and AIX printing services using Microsoft s Common Internet File System (CIFS) and Server Message Block (SMB) protocols over TCP/IP. 2 Description AIX Performance Toolbox for POWER Version 3.0 Performance Toolbox (PTX) is a comprehensive tool for monitoring and tuning system performance in distributed environments. In conjunction with the Performance AIDE, PTX provides the user the ability to concurrently visualize live performance on multiple systems. The AIDE also provides agents for creating 24 x 7 recordings of large sets of performance metrics, and for filtering data based on user-customized criteria. Filtering criteria can be used to generate events to a monitoring console or execute administration scripts. Additional utilities are provided to convert recorded data into formats suitable for import by third-party spreadsheets. By providing an umbrella for tools that can be used to analyze performance data and control system resources, PTX assists the system administrator in keeping track of available tools and in applying them in appropriate ways. This is done through a customizable menu interface. Tools can be added to menus, either with fixed parameters to match specific situations or in a dialog window. A new Java -based analysis interface focuses on trend analysis of large sets of performance metrics. You can customize a variety of visualizations for Workload Management (WLM) activity, allowing class and resource usage to be compared across different time periods. Other enhancements simplify remote recording configurations and overall product scalability. The Performance AIDE s unlimited license simplifies packaging and pricing. New wlmperf GUI support long-term analysis of Workload Manager class activity by resource. You can obtain snapshot, detailed, tabular, and trend views of Workload Manager performance. AIX Fast Connect for POWER Version 3.1 Fast Connect Version 3.1 includes significant new function, manageability enhancements, increased performance, and Windows 2000 support. It now implements User Name mapping, for example, Client User Names are not required to be same as AIX 5.1 user names. This feature accommodates client s user naming rules that may differ from AIX 5.1. Fast Connect maintains name mappings that can be configured from command line or SMIT. This feature supports mapping of multiple PC user names to single AIX 5.1 user name. Administrators can appreciate the flexibility in managing access of resources on AIX 5.1. NT password encryption support offers a higher level of security by allowing mixed case and longer passwords. Fast Connect DCE/DFS integration feature now supports encrypted passwords, in addition to plain text passwords you benefit from higher security and no longer need to modify Windows clients to enable plain text passwords. Fast Connect users can now change passwords from their Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows NT, or Windows 2000 PC clients, eliminating the need to logon to AIX for password change. Further, users can change their own passwords and synchronize them with AIX passwords using newly added cifspasswd command. This release of Fast Connect adds support of Windows Terminal Server (WTS). WTS makes Windows 2000 server multi-user. In addition, WTS can also map network drives to AIX 5.1 using Fast Connect. You gain access to AIX 5.1 resources and its own clients. Fast Connect can now provide Logon Service to Windows 2000 clients using IBM Network Client Version 4.4. This function provides roaming user profiles and startup scripts support. Logon support is available for Windows 95/98 users using Microsoft Client as well. Fast Connect servers are enhanced to provide detailed information about connected sessions including files open by individual users. An administrator can force a session to close or even a file to close. This function is supported through the command line. Graphical access to these functions is provided through Web-based System Manager. Further manageability enhancements include Web-based System Manager for AIX 5.1 support, which makes managing Fast Connect easier. The number of options that used to be server wide can now be configured on a per-share basis, offering additional flexibility to system administrators. Performance enhancements include directory search caching and memory mapped files. Search requests are one of the most expensive operations, in terms of system resources. Therefore, depending on customer environment, directory caching can show significant performance increase. Memory mapped I/O exploits AIX s memory mapping feature for user files, increasing read and write performance. Fast Connect now supports share-level security required by some of the existing AIX Connections customers. Capability to send messages to PC clients is added. Fast Connect includes Windows 2000 Active Directory integration. Fast Connect server and shares can be published in Active Directory using cifsldap command. This feature allows users to access Fast Connect shared file systems in graphical mode using the Windows 2000 Network Neighborhood directory browser

You can read, navigate, and search online HTML documentation. The Documentation Library Service also contains a Print Tool button. When you click this button, you see a list of books that can be downloaded in a single printable file for printing on your local printer. You have the option of customizing this list to include your own book for printing. This serves customers who want to view books online or read documents in hard copy format. Limitations: Refer to the product README files for any limitations. Performance Considerations Network-saturated environments may limit monitoring capabilities of Performance Toolbox. Fast Connect requires 512 K physical memory per client and enough CPU resource availability based on workload. Consult the Fast Connect Sizing (SG ) redbook for further information. Planning Information Installability: Use AIX migration procedures for PTX Version 3.0, Performance AIDE Version 3.0, and Fast Connect Version 3.1. Some customer reconfiguration is required. Direct Customer Support: Direct customer support is provided by AIX Support Line. This fee service enhances customers productivity by providing voice and electronic access into the IBM support organization. One CD-ROM and publications Your PoE for these programs is a copy of a paid sales receipt, purchase order, invoice, or other sales record from IBM or its authorized reseller from whom you acquired the program, provided that it states the license charge unit (the characteristics of intended use of the program for example, number of processors, number of users) and quantity acquired. Information about how you may obtain Program Services will be provided by the party (either IBM or its authorized reseller) from whom you acquired the program. Security, Auditability, and Control PTX Version 3.0 and AIX Fast Connect Version 3.1 use the security and auditability features of the AIX 5L Version 5.1 operating system software. The customer is responsible for evaluation, selection, and implementation of security features, administrative procedures, and appropriate controls in application systems and communication facilities.
