The Phoenix Philanthropy Group Alignment with the Goals of The Arizona We Want 2.0
THE PHOENIX RESPONSE TO THE ARIZONA WE WANT GOAL 1 Education Prepare Arizonans of all ages for the 21 st century workforce. Educare Arizona: Phoenix Philanthropy conducted an organizational assessment of Educare Arizona, the 13th school in the Educare Learning Network and the first of its kind in the Southwest, including further definition of roles and responsibilities of partners, staff, and Board; onsite interim management; and assisted in hiring and onboarding of new CEO. Maricopa Community Colleges Foundation: Our firm has partnered with the Foundation, which serves the nation s largest community college district, to strengthen its fundraising capabilities and to prepare for and conduct a $50 million comprehensive campaign, its firstever campaign. Graduate high school students who are college and career ready. Align graduation requirements to national and international standards. Customize education to meet students goals. 19% of Arizonans rate their community highly for the quality of its public schools. Educational institutions are one of our firm s four key areas of emphasis. Our educational clients range from early childcare providers through public school foundations and charter schools to higher educational institutions. Our Arizona educational clients have included: Educare Arizona, Balsz Education Foundation, Arizona School for the Arts, Arizona College Access Network, Maricopa Community Colleges Foundation, Pima Community College, Arizona State University - School of Art, Herberger Institute for Design and the Arts, Children's Museum of Phoenix, and Southwest Autism Research and Resource Center. The Phoenix Philanthropy Group will continue to partner with educational clients to enhance their fundraising, governance, management, organizational capacity, and performance in order to serve more Arizonans with highquality educational programs
THE PHOENIX RESPONSE TO THE ARIZONA WE WANT GOAL 2 Job Creation Create quality jobs for all Arizonans. Our Mission The Phoenix Philanthropy Group partners with organizations to build the strategies and resources to optimize their impact on our global society. Our Vision To empower organizations to achieve the greater good. Every day we further our mission and vision by partnering with our clients to deliver strategic, outcomes-driven revenue generation, constituent relations, strategic planning, and organizational development services that help our partners fulfill their missions and achieve their goals. Increased job opportunities. Job training programs for all ages. Lower business taxes. More investments in renewable energy. 96% of Arizonans do not rate their community highly for economic conditions. 76% do not believe the next generation will have a higher standard of living than we have today. In the 10 years since its founding, our firm has grown from three consultants to sixteen employees and contract workers, ranging in age from 25 to 70. In our work with clients, we stress the importance of building sustainable organizations that not only meet their social and financial goals, but provide the stability of ongoing work for their employees. Many of our clients have educational or development programs designed to increase employability and professional success. We believe that organizations with effective governance and sustainable, measurable effectiveness have a positive impact on the economy as a whole. Over the next few years, the Phoenix Philanthropy Group will continue to drive initiatives which will contribute to economic viability and job creation in Arizona. Specifically, we will: Commission research by ASU s Seidman Institute, ASU Lodestar Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Innovation, and the Alliance for Arizona Nonprofits to quantify the social return on investments in nonprofits and their economic relationships with public and private sector entities. Continue to encourage our clients to operate in an effective and efficient fashion that will support a sustainable and growing work force. Encourage our clients to consider social entrepreneurship ventures which provide training for their clients and lead to future employment.
THE PHOENIX RESPONSE TO THE ARIZONA WE WANT GOAL 3 Water, Forests and Open Spaces Protect Arizona s natural environment, water supplies and open spaces. Grand Canyon Association, Arizona: Phoenix Philanthropy worked with the Grand Canyon Association Arizona to undertake a comprehensive assessment of their internal organizational and development capacity. The association is the official nonprofit partner of Grand Canyon National Park, raising private funds to benefit the Park, operating retail shops and visitor centers within the park, and providing premier guided educational classes, hikes, and tours about the natural and cultural history of the region. Water management plans for all regions of Arizona statewide, regional and municipal job training programs for all ages. Policies that balance population growth with preserving open space. Of 14 quality of life features, Arizonans rate the state s natural beauty, outdoor parks and trails as its greatest asset. The Phoenix Philanthropy Group facilitated the development of a transition plan for the forty-year old Valley Forward organization to expand into the statewide Arizona Forward, which brings leaders from across the state together to encourage cooperative efforts to improve Arizona s sustainability and vitality. Other clients in the environmental arena include the Arizona Foundation for Resource Education, Arizona Science Center, and the Grand Canyon Association. The Phoenix Philanthropy Group will continue to partner with clients in the environmental sector to enhance their fundraising, governance, management and organizational capacity and performance in order to be effective advocates for wise use of Arizona s natural resources and to increase understanding of environmental issues.
THE PHOENIX RESPONSE TO THE ARIZONA WE WANT GOAL 5 Healthcare Provide health insurance for all, with payment assistance for those who need it. Dignity Health Foundation East Valley: Phoenix Philanthropy provided campaign preparation, planning, and management for the $5 million community-funded initiative as part of the $125 million Tower C project at Chandler Regional Medical Center. This five-story tower will add 96 beds and expand the capacity of emergency services and medicalsurgical unit, allowing CRMC to expand on its mission of delivering compassionate, high-quality, affordable health services; serving and advocating for the poor and disenfranchised; and partnering with others in the community to improve quality of life. In addition to meeting the increasing healthcare needs of Chandler and surrounding communities, approximately 180 jobs will be added to the hospital s staff. Health insurance that is publicly available to all Arizonans with payment assistance for those who need it. Healthcare discounts for people who adopt healthy lifestyle behaviors. More doctors and healthcare professionals to provide primary healthcare services. Only 23% of Arizonans rate their community highly for accessible healthcare. Our firm has partnered with healthcare organizations such as Dignity Health, Arizona Burn Foundation, the Southwest Autism Research and Resource Center, and Maricopa Integrated Health System to strengthen their organizations, allowing them to provide enhanced services to their communities and assist a greater number of patients and their families. As part of our strategic plan, The Phoenix Philanthropy Group seeks to increase the number of healthcare organizations we serve in various capacities whether campaigns, assessments, or fundraising training to build their culture of philanthropy and increase contributed revenue to serve more patients and their families. We will explore a more expansive definition of healthcare and the overlap of some sectors, i.e. how integrated healthcare intertwines with human and community service. We will focus our efforts on hospital networks, foundations, teaching hospitals, smaller systems, community medical clinics and other healthcare organizations in Arizona and the Western Pacific region.
THE PHOENIX RESPONSE TO THE ARIZONA WE WANT GOAL 6 Young Talent Make Arizona the place to be for talented young people. Engaging, Developing, and Retaining Arizona s Young Professionals Quality jobs. More places where young people can gather. Protection for the environment. Culture of openness and opportunity for all. Only 6% of young Arizonans believe their community offers good job opportunities. 19% rate their community highly for its nightlife; 20% believe it s a good place to meet people. 42% of young Arizonans give high marks to the state s open spaces. Young Arizonans believe leaders need to be willing to listen. The Manifesto Project s Board Apprenticeship program, the resulting product of the market research phase, is being developed and implemented by a consulting associate at The Phoenix Philanthropy Group. This program encourages organizations to reserve a "shadow" position on their Board of Directors for a high- potential young professional who will serve a 1-year non-voting term where they will gain invaluable high-level strategic experience in their chosen sector. This professional experience will give participants a greater stake in their communities, inspire them to seek future leadership roles, and encourage them to begin and continue their careers here, in our state. The Manifesto Project s goal is to have 50 organizations implement the Board Apprenticeship program by January 1, Several Phoenix Philanthropy team members have served as a driving force behind the creation and development of The Manifesto Project. The Project, inspired by The Arizona We Want 2.0 Report, began as a year-long market research study to uncover why our state was failing so miserably to retain its young talent. The study, which convened 25 statewide "focus groups, polled more than 1,000 young professionals on what would encourage or discourage them from staying in Arizona for the long term.
THE PHOENIX RESPONSE TO THE ARIZONA WE WANT GOAL 7 Civic Engagement Empower citizens and increase civic engagement. The Arizona Leadership Forum is an elevation of the dialogue, a catalyst for empowerment, and an ongoing movement of leadership and transformation for our enterprises and our state. More citizenship participation in all aspects of citizenship. Leaders who understand complex issues and work across party lines. 10% of Arizonans believe their elected officials represent their interests. 24% believe the next generation will have a better standard of living than we have today. The Phoenix Philanthropy Group is one of three Founding Presenting Sponsors of the Arizona Nonprofit Leadership Initiative, whose goal is: To empower and position the nonprofit sector as a leading driver in economic development, positive social change, and enhancement of the quality of life for all Arizonans. One of our Senior Consultants serves on the Board of Barat Education Foundation in Chicago, which has developed a creative educational immersion program called "Our American Voice," which aims to teach youth about civic engagement. The foundation plans to launch the program in Tucson in The Phoenix Philanthropy Group is once again the Founding Presenting Sponsor and project manager for the third iteration of the Arizona Leadership Forum. This year s forum will bring together C-Suite level executives and leaders in the nonprofit, for-profit, and political sectors to discuss the importance of public-private partnerships and transformational leadership. Over the next year, The Phoenix Philanthropy Group, in partnership with ASU s Seidman Institute, ASU Lodestar Center for Philanthropy and Nonprofit Innovation, Arizona Community Foundation, and the Alliance of Arizona Nonprofits will oversee work on Phase 1 of the Arizona Nonprofit Economic Vitality Study. This study is designed to create a comprehensive assessment of the size, scale, and scope of the nonprofit sector in Arizona, while calculating the economic impact of the sector as a whole and social return on investment in the sector.
THE PHOENIX RESPONSE TO THE ARIZONA WE WANT GOAL 8 Community Involvement Foster citizen well-being and sense of connection to one another. Social Venture Partners of Arizona has found The Phoenix Philanthropy Group an invaluable partner as we try to stimulate Philanthropy in the Valley. With a diverse group of consultants with a wide-breadth of expertise, SVPAZ has been amazed by the strategic vision and leadership Phoenix Philanthropy has provided our organization and those we serve. Terri Wogan, Executive Director, SVP Arizona A deeper sense of community connection. More neighborliness. 25% believe Arizona is a good place to meet people. 37% believe they are treated with respect at all times n their community. Members of The Phoenix Philanthropy Group serve on the following local and state boards: Social Venture Partners Arizona Stop Bullying Arizona Association of Fundraising Professionals Arizona Humanities Arizona Forward Regional Council Arizona Science Center Learning Committee Arizona Planned Giving Round Table The Phoenix Philanthropy Group is committed to being a firm that advances organizations that support and enhance our communities. Specifically, we will: Continue to support team members service on state and national boards and committees. Continue to be an active Arizona Advocate with the TAWW network.
