CircusNext Supporting European young authors in the field of circus arts Ivan Mosjoukine (JTCE 2010) - Milan Szypura A project coordinated by Jeunes Talents Cirque Europe association 9 rue de la Pierre Levée Paris Chairman: Claude Véron Executive director: Fred Cardon [email protected]
From Jeunes Talents Cirque to CircusNext The operation Jeunes Talents Cirque was created in 2001/2002, on the occasion of the year of circus arts led by the French Ministry of Culture. Held by the association «Scènes de cirque», the project aims at identifying young contemporary circus artists, and at supporting their emergence through a grant and residencies. This first edition was a success: in October 2002, thirteen young companies presented their creation projects at the Théâtre de la Cité Internationale (Paris, France). Among them were Camille Boitel, Baro d evel cirk cie or Ludor Citrik, now leaders of the French circus arts scene; all of them benefited from Jeunes Talents Cirque s support to create in good conditions and make a name for themselves. The operation was renewed in 2004, 2006 and 2008, and extended to other European countries. In 2007, Jeunes Talents Cirque Europe association was created and put in charge of the project. The association is entirely dedicated to producing and organizing the operation, and implementing a network of European partners. In 2009/2010, the first officially European edition (funded by the Culture Programme of the European Commission) was led in partnership with cultural organizations from Belgium, Spain, Croatia, Scandinavia, the United-Kingdom and France. Ten laureates from seven countries were selected, who are to present their first shows in 2011/2012. Baro d evel cirk compagnie Bechtout (JTC 2002) Over the years, Jeunes Talents Cirque Europe became a crucial operation for the development of contemporary circus, and for the acknowledgement of circus as an art form in itself. The artists supported have been developing diverse and innovative aesthetics, and have distinguished themselves by their wish of experimenting new forms. As contemporary circus is multidisciplinary, they have been opening to other performing arts (dance, theatre, music) and to new technologies (video, digital arts). Their shows have been broadly presented across France, where Jeunes Talents Cirque Europe is now well known, Europe along with the development of the network and the whole world (Asia, Africa, America). Contemporary circus has gone through a true development, and even the Festival d Avignon has programmed two contemporary cricus shows in 2010; one of them, Singularités ordinaires (Le GdRA), had been created with the support of Jeunes Talents Cirque Europe. 1
In 2012, Jeunes Talents Cirque Europe will go further through the European path and become CircusNext: a cooperation project designed on the European scale to offer optimal conditions to contemporary circus authors. The operation is now on a yearly basis, includes intermediate residency periods and favours maximal mobility of the artists across the European territory. The project is expected to last for five years and also aims at qualifying creation processes, renewing production methods and encouraging national cultural policies to evolve. Next call for projects in April 2012, next public presentation of the projects in Paris in April 2013: with CircusNext, contemporary circus is not done emerging! 4 In 2012, Jeunes Talents Cirque Europe becomes CircusNext A comprehensive operation to support artistic emergence - Jeunes Talents Cirque Europe operation The selection process itself keeps the original name of Jeunes Talents Cirque Europe and becomes annual from April Six major steps occur every year: Call for projects: published throughout Europe. Artists candidates are required to have completed their education and to be involved in a creation project, which must be either their first or second professional show. Selection on application files: a jury gathering artists and performing arts professionals is in charge of selecting twelve projects. Pre-selection residencies: an innovation of CircusNext project. Pre-selection residencies aim at equalizing the preparation to the selection for preselected candidates. Selection week: the twelve artists preselected present a 20-minute model of their project to the jury. At the end of the week, five projects are selected and receive a grant for writing (10,000 to 15,000 ). Residencies: laureates benefit from at least one month of residency in one or several partner venues, which allows them to work on their models and make their project evolve. These residencies occur in the best possible conditions Desastronauts Losing Grip (2010) Milan Szypura (ideally, artists will be remunerated in addition to total coverage of their expenses). Public presentations: laureates present their models to an audience of performing arts professionals, artists, etc. A public presentation gathering about 250 European professionals is held each year in Paris, at the Théâtre de la Cité Internationale, and concludes the support scheme. 3
A selection process led by renowned artists To favour the emergence of truly innovative researches and aesthetics, the selection process is led by a jury made up of European experts, including renowned artists and performing arts professionals (members of the JTCE network). In 2009/2010, artists Maksim Komaro (juggler, director, Circo Aereo, Finland), Phia Ménard (juggler, Non Nova Company, France) and Rose English (circus and theatre artist, director, United- Kingdom) were members of the permanent selection committee. The jury was chaired by Jean- Michel Guy (La Scabreuse, France), researcher, director and reviewer specialized in circus arts. - Laboratories («labs») In parallel with the selection process, CircusNext has created an innovative support process: the laboratories ( labs ). Labs are gatherings of about ten days, targeted to European artists identified over the course of the selection process (not necessarily laureates). 10 to 15 artists are invited to work freely and collectively under the supervision of experienced and renowned artists (director, choreographers, academics ). The labs can be dedicated to a specific theme (writing a contemporary circus performance; using new technologies, etc.) or consist of open sessions around the creation projects of each of the artists. They are held on specific territories, and always include a local dimension local development / development of circus arts on the territories. They might also be organized in partnership with a non-european country ( third countries ). Un loup pour l homme Appris par corps (2006) - Riccardo Musacchio & Flavio Ianniello - An area for exchange with performing arts professionals CircusNext is a way for the artists to meet performing arts professional and make themselves known, for instance on the occasion of the selection process and public presentations. This networking is a condition to the development of the projects and their viability. 4
A European-wide cooperation platform CircusNext is a cooperation project designed and organized by a variety of European partners: Cultural centres dedicated to multidisciplinary programming (e.g. Centro Cultural Vila Flor, Portugal; Copenhagen International Theatre KIT, Denmark) Artistic creation centres (e.g. La Cascade, circus arts and clown House, France; La Grainerie, France) Performing arts venues (e.g. CIRKO, Finland) Education venues and circus schools (e.g. Carampa, Spain) Festivals (e.g. Festival Mirabilia, Italy) Organizations dedicated to artistic support (e.g. Les Migrateurs associated for circus arts, France) Organization dedicated to circus arts development (e.g. Circuscentrum, Flanders, Belgium) The activity program is implemented by all the partners. Each member of the platform hosts some of the activities (residencies, selection weeks, public presentations, labs, etc.) and cofinances the grants for writing. Le Petit Travers - Le Partis Pris des Choses (2004) - Philippe Cibille Members of the CircusNext platform: UteClassen Kulturmanagement, Germany Circuscentrum, Flanders, Belgium - Humorologie, Belgium Kovenhavn International Theatre, Denmark - La Central del Circ, Spain Carampa, Spain - Cirko, Finland - Association JTCE, France La Cascade, maison des arts du cirque et du clown, France - Les Migrateurs associés pour les arts du cirque, France Le Maillon - Scène européenne, France - La Grainerie, France Festival Mirabilia, Italy Scuola Circo Vertigo, Italy - Arts Printing House, Lituania - Circus Xanti, Norway Theater Op de Markt, Netherlands Keijos, Poland - Centro Cultural Vila Flor, Portugal - Cirqueon, Czech Republic Crying Out Loud, United-Kingdom - Circus Futures, UnitedKingdom - Subtopia, Sweden.
