1 Undergraduate Memo Curriculum Update for General Finance Degree Date: January 26, 2015 From: Dr. James E Upson, Economics and Finance, College of Business Administration To: Jane Evans, Chair, Undergraduate Curriculum Committee c/o Lucina Zarate, Project Manager Subject: Degree Plan Change for General Finance Concentration Computers and computer applications have become an integral part of business life. Demonstration of capability in business related computer applications is a core competency of a successful business candidate. In order to establish this competency in our business students, I am proposing a change to the degree plan for the general finance degree from the College of Business Administration. I plan on introducing two financial lab courses, FIN 4311A and FIN 4315A. These lab courses will teach advanced financial modeling in Excel using market data acquired from the WRDS database. Each lab will be 1.5 credit hours. The FIN 4311A course will be integrated with Fin 4310 Managerial Finance course. A number of financial modeling techniques will be addressed in the FIN 4311A course: Sales Forecasting, Balance sheet and Income Statement forecasting, Capital funds forecasting, Capital budgeting using Excel, Monte Carlo simulation of forecasts and Capital Budgeting, Sensitivity Analysis, and Demand/Price optimization. The student will learn the following excel functions: Regression analysis, sensitivity table function, goal seek, optimizer, plotting functions, format and table functions, data import functions, general statistical functions in Excel, constrained optimization, and general excel functions such as cell formatting. The goal is to bridge the theoretical techniques presented in class with the practical knowledge required to analyze real world data in excel. The FIN 4315A class will be integrated with Fin 4315 Portfolio Analysis. The lab will focus on using excel to optimize a portfolio by selecting stock weights that maximize an objective function using the excel Solver. The students will estimate stock beta's using regression techniques in excel. The student will then use excel analysis to evaluate the performance of the portfolio relative to predicted portfolio performance. Monte Carlo simulation will be applied to identify the long run performance of the portfolio under a series of randomly generated conditions. Bond portfolios formation will also be examined. The lab will be used to show the practical application of portfolio theory using real would data on stocks and bonds. The addition of the labs requires a change to the degree plan for general finance. First, to maintain the 120 credit hour degree, one financial elective will be dropped from the plan. Second, Fin 4310 and Fin 4315, along with the financial labs will be listed as required courses. Third, Fin 3315 Investments, will be added as a required course because it is a prerequisite for Fin Finally, although there is no substantive change to the course catalog, the existing copy of the catalog is included with this request. Please note that the Fin Lab course numbers may change to fit within the existing course identification framework of the College of Business Administration. A separate memo is attached to the degree plan change for the Financial Analyst concentration.

This course s objective is to produce proficiency in the student s application of Excel in the solving of financial problems. Students are required to take the course concurrently with Fin 4310 (Managerial Finance). The course will introduce students to solving financial problems, given the topics covered in Fin 4310, using Excel or other statistical software. Proficiency in Excel in solving financial problems will be highly valuable in the finance marketplace to students who take this concurrent laboratory as they develop their careers in finance.

Objectives The objective of this course is give our students the practical knowledge required to incorporate the theoretical framework presented in the primary corporate finance class into financial models developed in Excel. This effort will also give our students practical experience in financial modeling using data from actual stocks. In addition, Excel is a primary software packaged used by many corporations. This class will give skills to the student in using both basic and advanced Excel features Exams There are no exams in the lab. Projects There are six projects for this class. Complete project details are available on the class website and only a brief overview is presented here. Each project will require a detailed report. Roughly 60% of the grade will be based on the excel application and 40% of the grade will be based on the detailed report. In order to guild the student through the process of building the Excel based financial model, online videos are posted, giving step-by-step instructions. 1) Sales Forecast (100 pts): The student will be assigned a firm for evaluation. The student will download sales and economic information and crate a regression model that will forecast future sales including a 10 year projection. Linear and quadratic regressions are required. The focus of the project is on selecting a model that best forecasts future sales and a discussion of the forecast accuracy. 2) Income and Cash flow statements (50 pts): Based on the sales forecast, the student will create income and cash flow projections for 1, 5, and 10 years. The student will focus on the financing needs of the company including working capital, short term debt and long term debt. 3) Income and sensitivity analysis (100 pts): Using the standard error of the forecast, the student will create a financing plan over a 5 year time span. The financing plan must maintain key financial ratios such as debt to equity, quick ratios, current ratios, and payout ratios.

6 4) WACC (50pts): The student will evaluate the Weighted Average Cost of Capital for the firm and estimate a min and max level for the WACC. This calculation will be used in the capital budgeting plan. 5) Basic NPV with demand curve optimization (100pts): The student will be given a demand curve and cost structure for a new product and be required to formulate a simple NPV spread sheet that optimizes production and pricing levels to maximize profit. Discount rates will be based on the WACC calculations. 6) Complex NPV (100pts): The basic NPV project will be further optimized considering capacity matching. In addition, a Monte Carlo simulation will be evaluated to produce and expected distribution of payoff and downside risk evaluations.. Project due dates will be posted on the class black board website. All submissions will be online. Both the excel file and word document containing the report must be submitted. Using WRDS, the student will download return information and generate an excel file that creates three portfolios. There will be a Sharpe Optimal portfolio, a Minimum Variance portfolio, and a Targeted Beta portfolio. Each portfolio will be evaluated based on performance. 2) Advance portfolio formation: Using the same 10 stocks, the student will re-balance the portfolio based on a market model regression and a Fama and French 3-factor regression. A Sharpe Optimal, Minimum Variance, and Targeted Beta portfolio will be required. Each portfolio will be evaluated based on performance and compared to the prior portfolios formed with historic data.

19 3) Hedging with S&P mini-futures contracts: The student will establish a cross-hedge using S&P mini future contracts for each of the advance portfolios, Evaluate the VaR of the portfolio and evaluate the hedge performance over a 30 day period. 4) Monte Carlo Simulations: Using the Minimum Variance portfolio and the Sharpe Optimal portfolios from the basic portfolio project, the student will create a simulation over a 30 year investment horizon, running 1,000 simulations. The simulation will incorporate investor income, income growth, and random properties of investment. Performance evaluations of the portfolios will include min/max results, downside risk curves, statistical properties, long term risk evaluation, and the recommendation of one portfolio 5) Bond portfolio: The student will create a portfolio of bonds having a target duration and a final target value. 10 bonds are required as a minimum in the portfolio from 5 difference sources. The student will also be required to develop a three year rebalancing plan that minimizes trades, meets the changing duration target and the final value target. Each project is worth 100 points.
