1 UCLAN Medicine Undergraduate Foundation Programme
2 The best choice for your future career WHICH DEGREE? Medicine The UCLan School of Medicine and Dentistry MBBS programme has been established to offer a UK MBBS qualification to 35 international students. Why study Medicine? Medicine is about more than a qualification. It is a vocation and a way of life that is about putting the patient first. Medicine is a challenging but exciting and rewarding career. A medical degree will help you to become a competent and compassionate doctor, with expertise in a range of practical areas. Why study Medicine in the UK? Medical training in the UK has a long history of excellence and of offering training to overseas doctors. Leaders in Medicine throughout the world have received their training in the UK. The UK National Health Service (NHS) is envied across the world for its free for everyone at the point of access ethos. Students will take up their placements within the East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust - GP practices in East Lancashire, Bridgewater Community Foundation NHS Trust, Lancashire Care Foundation Trust and Lancashire Teaching Hospital Foundation Trust. Students will be part of a team delivering care to the highest standards. The North West of England is not only a vibrant and welcoming area in which to live and study, it is also a culturally, socially and economically diverse region. This means that medical students at UCLan are exposed to a wide range of clinical and public health issues, giving them a broad and varied experience. 3 Medicine at UCLan UCLan has been producing respected graduates in the field of healthcare, dentistry, pharmacy and biomedical science for many years and has a reputation as a leading provider of health education. The MBBS programme has been developed in line with UK General Medical Council approval processes.* State-of-the-art facilities, including: five highspecification skills laboratories equipped with life-size human simulators to help students develop their clinical skills; the Human Anatomy Resource and Learning Centre where students learn about the workings of the human body; and simulated settings such as a doctor s surgery and patient s home. Placements undertaken within the East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust at the Royal Blackburn Hospital and Burnley General Hospital. These hospitals have first-class medical facilities, almost a thousand inpatient beds between them, and one of the busiest Emergency departments in the North West of England. Placements are also undertaken at: - Lancashire Care NHS Foundation Trust (LCFT) Whilst the majority of clinical placements will be provided by ELHT, LCFT will provide our students with mental health and some community placements. - Lancashire Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust (LTHFT) Additional specialist teaching in renal medicine and neurology will be provided by LTHFT in years 3 and 4. The UCLan MBBS is closely aligned with the USMLE curriculum to assist students who may want to write this exam and undertake postgraduate training in the USA. *The GMC recognises bodies to award primary medical qualifications and quality assures UCLan and its first undergrdaute medicine programme. This takes the form of a year by year review following the first cohort to graduation. Only during the final year of the programme will the GMC be able to approve UCLan and add it to its list of bodies that can award primary medical qualifications. There can be no guarantee that this will be the outcome of the review and UCLan has contingency arrangements in place so that students enrolled in the programme will be able to complete their studies.
4 BACHELOR OF MEDICINE AND BACHELOR OF SURGERY (MBBS) The UCLan MBBS aims to prepare graduates who are able to take on the roles and responsibilities of a medical doctor. The UCLan MBBS is a 5-year programme. Three themes are central to the curriculum: 1. Integrated science and clinical medicine 2. Evidence informed practice of medicine 3. Medical skills and quality care Years 1 & 2 Students will learn in small groups and receive a good grounding in the medical sciences so that they can begin to integrate this knowledge with their learning in communication and clinical skills. Modules include: ISCM - the scientific concepts that underpin human biology, health and disease; EIPOM - the wider determinants of health and wellbeing at community and population levels; MSQC - the clinical and communication skills needed by a medical doctor. Students will meet patients in Years 1 and 2, initially in GP practices and community settings and in Year 2 in hospital. Years 3 & 4 Students rotate through clinical specialties. Students are based mainly at the Royal Blackburn, Burnley General Hospitals, Bridgewater Community NHS Foundation Trust and GP practices in East Lancashire, three days per week and at a UCLan campus for the remaining days, in either Preston or Burnley. Year 5 Students develop their early professional practice by undertaking four six-week apprenticeships in: urgent/emergency care; acute medicine and surgery; community; and a special study module. Students are encouraged to work independently with close supervision from departmental mentors and an assigned clinical supervisor. Finally, students will complete a four week assistantship shadowing a foundation doctor. Like all graduates from UK Medical Schools, UCLan MBBS graduates would be eligible to apply to the UK Foundation programme for postgraduate training. However, we should point out that this is a very competitive process. The Medical School has in place a Careers and Transitions Lead who will meet with each student throughout the course to plan for progression into postgraduate study and registration, either in their home country or their country of choice after completion of the programme.
