1 Proposal For Upgrades in the AG450 Lab Agricultural Education & Studies through the College of Agriculture in response to a call for proposals by the Computer Advisory Committee Gaylan Scofield, Ph.D., Proposer - ggs@iastate.edu 006 Curtiss Hall Larry Trede, Ph.D. - trede@iastate.edu 206A Curtiss Hall Greg Vogel -gvogel@iastate.edu AG450 Farm Lab Robert Martin - Professor & Head Agricultural Education & Studies Department Dean, College of Agricutlure
2 Project Overview and Expected Benefit This proposal from the Department of Agricultural Education & Studies is a request to enhance the AG450 computer classroom / lab to function with GIS software & data collection. There are currently 3 computers in the lab (Pentium 100, Pentium 133, Pentium 150). The Pentium 100 was purchased with student departmental funds three years ago, while the other two systems have been provided by non-student funds. Students currently utilize these systems in class as well as outside of class. A. Description and intended purpose for all project expenditures and identify expenditures from Central Pool Funds. This project proposes to upgrade the AG450 computer classroom / lab to implement GIS and precision agriculture technology for collection and management decisions for a College of Agriculture Capstone course. It is our intent to purchase one Pentium III Laptop and two Pentium III Desktop systems with 19" monitors, scanner, inkjet printer, and current software to enhance student collection and analysis of agricultural GIS data for use in the AGEDS 450 management class as well as the sharing of that data with other University Departments for use in their classes. B. Quantify how the proposed facilities will be made available to students. 1. Identify the hours this facility will be open for general student use. The AG450 Lab is open 24 hours/day 7 days/week. Scheduled courses are taught 6 hours per week in this lab. 2. Identify the number of students that will be able to work simultaneously during these hours. 5 students 24 hours/day 7 days/week except when the class is taught (6 hours/week) for data collection and analysis Sharing of data to other Departments could have an impact on 3000 plus students 3. Identify the number of student population(s) that should benefit from the proposal. Estimate the number of students to be served. This laboratory currently serves approximately 400 undergraduate students in the Ag Studies and Ag Education curriculums. With the new shared data concept, it has the potential of reaching students in courses from any other Department in the College of Agriculture as well as others at the University level.
3 Agricultural Studies Undergrad Major Agricultural Education Undergrad Major AGEDS 450 Farm Management & Operation Students from other Departments (estimated) - via shared data to other instructors 285 students 125 students 100 students /year 3000 plus/year C. Special new technologies needed. None D. Identify university facilities needed for the proposed project. AG45 0 classr oom / lab Support and Maintenance 1. Support for recurring costs will not be supported; identify the anticipated costs and explain how these costs will be met this year and in future years. The AGEDS Department employs a hardware/software support person to perform the required routine maintenance and repair. The Department installs devices to prevent theft. Additional support and maintenance costs for this facility will be paid through other resources made available to AGEDS by the College and University or by the AG450 Farm.
