Choosing Modules at The University of Nottingham For general information on modules including the definition of a module please see: Schools and Departments at Nottingham Study Abroad and Exchange students should select a minimum of 30 credits per semester in their home school/department and the remaining 30 credits in other schools/departments at The University of Nottingham. For a list of schools and departments please see: What is the module catalogue? The online Module Catalogue provides information on which modules are offered at The University of Nottingham: Modules which are available to Study Abroad and Exchange students are listed as available to JYA/Erasmus. The module catalogue provides all the information you need about each module, including: The module code and title The number of Nottingham credits the module is worth (usually 10 or 20 credits) The level of module (Level 1/A are for first year students, Level 2/B are for second year students etc.) The taught semester: the semester the module is running i.e. Autumn Semester September-January, Spring Semester January-June, Full Academic Year September-June The pre-requisites: whether specific prior knowledge is required for the module The content of the module How the module is taught How the module is assessed The module convener: the name of the academic member of staff who teaches the module.
How many modules should I study? All Study Abroad and Exchange students are expected to take 60 Nottingham credits per semester or 120 Nottingham credits per academic year, which is the normal credit load for all undergraduate students. In certain circumstances, with the written approval of your home university, a student may be entitled to take the minimum of 50 credits per semester in order to be classified as a full-time student. It is an immigration requirement that you are registered as a full-time student at The University of Nottingham. European students may find it useful to know that 60 Nottingham credits are approximately equivalent to 30 ECTS.
Schools with limited module availability or specific requirements Architecture and Built Environment All students must submit a portfolio of their work to date on either CD or USB or submitted via with their other supporting documentation. It should show examples of your best work. The School would like to see a combination of skills including conceptual/spatial design (design poetics and contextuality) and its technical resolution (structures and construction, environmental design). Portfolios should be sent to the International Office. Students can take modules from years 2 or 5 only. Specifically students may only apply for the prescribed course programme (compulsory modules) that are available in year 2 semester 2 B.Arch (Spring) OR in year 5 semester 1 M.Arch (Autumn). These modules are: K12DSB + K12TSB + K12IDB + K12AH2 (year 2) OR K14AUS+ K14DCC + K14ET1+ K14PS1 (year 5). Art History V41110, V41152, V42999 not available to Study Abroad and Exchange students. Business School Only certain modules are available to Study Abroad and Exchange students in the Business School. A list of available modules is circulated annually and if a module is not listed, it is not available. Chemistry Places on laboratory, project and computing modules are limited and cannot be guaranteed. Chemical and Environmental Engineering Exchanges are only possible for a full academic year, single semester is not accepted. Students must enroll into year 2 or 3 of the programmes in Chemical Engineering, Chemical Engineering with Environmental Engineering or Environmental Engineering. Students must follow the prescribed programme for the academic year; there are no optional modules available. Civil Engineering All modules - except H23A13, H23A14, H24A04 and any Summer semester modules are available, provided the applicant has a similar level of knowledge as expected from local students. Applicants interested in H23A13, H23A14 or H24A04 should choose H23AOA instead, adding H23AOB/C/D etc. if they wish their project to be more substantial. Applicants may choose or H23GDP or H24A03, but not both.
Classics No restrictions, though full-year Level 3 modules will have priority given to home students. Places not agreed through the pre-enrolment process will be subject to availability due to caps. The exception is language modules, which have no cap. It is advisable for students wishing to study post-beginner's Latin or Greek to consult with the Classics Language Coordinator, particularly if they are not pre-enrolled. Computer Science Study Abroad and Exchange students who do not have a direct agreement with the School may not take any level 1 modules due to pressure of numbers. Culture, Film and Media Studies Economics Core modules (Microeconomics and Macroeconomics) in both years 1 and 2 are not available to students not majoring in Economics. Alternatives are on offer in year 1 (Britain in the World Economy and How do Markets Work). However, the latter 2 are NOT available to Business School students. Education It is not possible for Study Abroad and Exchange students to take postgraduate modules from the School of Education. English Studies Only certain modules are available to Study Abroad and Exchange students. U21 institutions that are native English speakers or ERASMUS students from Oslo, Helsinki, Heidelberg or Venice can choose a max of 60 credits of Level 2 and 3 modules and/or subsidiary modules. U21 institutions that are non-native English speakers, non-u21 institutions that are native English speakers, or students from City University, Hong Kong may choose a max of 40 credits of Level 2 and 3 modules and/or subsidiary (Level 1) modules. All other institutions can choose a max of 30 credits of subsidiary modules per semester of exchange. Students who are not native speakers of English must meet the School s minimum English language entry requirement of IELTS 7 (or equivalent) in order to be considered for Level 2 or 3 modules within the School. For non-english majors and all other students who wish to take modules in the School of English Studies, certain Level 1 modules are available to all Study Abroad and Exchange students, up to a maximum of 30 credits per semester.
Geography Only certain modules are available to Study Abroad and Exchange students. Law Outside the Universitas21 programme and specific international exchange partners of the School of Law, spaces are very limited. Only Law majors will be considered and all applications must be approved by the School prior to acceptance. Life Sciences (Neuroscience) All applications must be approved by the School prior to acceptance. Please note that there is no guarantee that the modules will be available. Mathematical Sciences Mathematics modules with codes beginning G1 are intended for mathematics students and are not normally available to students from other disciplines, except when their previous curriculum includes significant mathematical content. Mathematics modules with codes beginning HG are intended for non-mathematics students. All module choices need to be approved either in advance or upon arrival. Project-based modules will not normally be available, and restrictions may apply for modules requiring computing facilities. Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences Study Abroad and Exchange students are not able to take modules from any School/Department in the Faculty of Medical and Health Sciences: The only exception to this is the School of Life Sciences (see above for details). Music Pre-requisites may be expected for specific modules; study abroad applicants are advised to speak with the department in advance. Study Abroad and Exchange students who wish to take performance classes will be charged a separate fee which is not included in tuition fees or in the exchange agreement between Nottingham and your home university. Pharmacy Laboratory-based modules cannot be guaranteed. The timetable will not allow students to take modules from more than one academic year; ideally students should take a whole semester/year of the MPharm programme. Students are advised to select modules at one level lower than that which they are studying at the home institution. Professional modules which relate specifically to UK practice are restricted to UK full degree students only. Physics and Astronomy The majority of modules are only available for a full academic year; some modules are possible for one semester. All applications approved by the School prior to acceptance. There is no guarantee the modules will be available.
Politics and International Relations Outside of U21 and the School s exchange partners, spaces are very limited. Only Politics/Government/Political Science/International Studies/Area Studies majors will be considered and all applications are approved by the School prior to acceptance. A list of modules will be circulated during the summer. If a module is not listed, it is not available to Study Abroad and Exchange students. There is no guarantee that modules will be available without pre-registration. Psychology Please be aware the majority of level 1 modules are year-long. Only certain modules are available to Study Abroad and Exchange students. All applications must be approved by the School prior to acceptance. There is no guarantee the modules will be available.
