4 What causes central heating breakdowns and inefficiency? If you have an older boiler which has been fitted for several years it s likely that you will have a build-up of this sludge in your existing pipework. Damaging iron-oxide sludge According to the Energy Savings Trust, a new boiler replacement costs 2,500-3,000 on average Central heating systems can be highly efficient and economical to run - especially new boilers which are technologically far more advanced than a few years ago. The waterways within a modern boiler are much narrower which significantly improves efficiency, but only when they are operating at peak performance. When they re not, heat levels can plummet and costs can rocket. Within all unprotected central heating systems (radiators and metallic components) there is a corrosion process taking place almost constantly; the result of which is the creation of black iron oxide (sludge), contaminating the water. Left untreated this thick sludge will clog boilers, radiators and pipes and impair the performance of the central heating. The result is a system under pressure to perform correctly.
