Introduction Your home s plumbing system encompasses all of the pipes that deliver water to your home, as well as all of the water and waste drainage from your home. If you have gas heat, then your plumbing also includes your gas lines. When you think about it, your plumbing is a fundamental part of your health and well-being. If your plumbing is not in good shape, then you can t afford to waste time when it comes to getting it the care it needs. But, what steps can you take on your own to maintain your plumbing, and in what ways can you (and should you) rely on a plumbing professional? For the answers to these questions and more, we have put together this hand report to get your questions answered. Enjoy! 4 5 Things You Should Know Before You Hire a Local Plumber
Home Plumbing Checklist Even as a layperson, you can assess most of the plumbing inside of your home in order to determine which areas might need some special attention. By going through this home plumbing checklist, you can identify small issue before they become large issues so that you can take proper steps to repair them (or have them repaired by a professional). Here is a basic guide to checking your home s plumbing: Leaky faucets. It may not seem like a huge loss, but leaky faucets can actually cost you a lot of extra money on your monthly water bill. If you need proof of how much water a leaky faucet can waste, simply place a bucket underneath the faucet in question and leave it overnight. Water pressure. Low water pressure may be indicative of something as simple as sediment buildup in a shower head, or as serious as a problem with the water lines that feed your water supply. If you experience low water pressure in any area of the house, then you need to get to the bottom of it. Leaks. A leaky faucet is one thing, but leaky piping is something different altogether. This is generally a much more serious problem that requires much more complex repair work. If you notice wet spots on your walls, ceilings, or floors, then it may be that you need to repair and/or replace your piping and pronto before you incur serious 5 5 Things You Should Know Before You Hire a Local Plumber
water damage. Also, be on the lookout for mildew, which could be indicative of standing water (and a leak). Corrosion. Corroded pipes can contaminate your water, or even further erode your plumbing, and need to be replaced right away. Look for green, yellow, or orange stains around shut off valves and pipe fittings to identify corrosion. Caulking. Examine the caulking around your showers, sinks, and toilets. Replace any damaged or loose caulking to prevent leaks. Water heater. There are a number of things that can go wrong with your water heater, impairing its ability to deliver hot water when you need it. Clean the tank regularly to prevent sediment buildup. Also, check the thermostats and heating element to make sure they are functioning properly. 6 5 Things You Should Know Before You Hire a Local Plumber
How to Prevent Clogged Drains Clogged drains are one of the most common plumbing issues, and they can be a real nuisance when it comes to maintaining your quality of life in the household (have you ever tried to do the dishes in a sink that wouldn t drain?). Fortunately, it is easy to avoid this all-too common problem if you take the right precautionary measures. Here are some tips for how to prevent clogged drains: Use drain screens. The simplest way you can keep drain-clogging materials from going downstream is to use a drain screen. A drain screen is simply a plastic or metal strainer that you place over your drain. Clean your drain screens regularly to maintain proper drain flow. Boiling water. Even if you use drain screens, soap scum and mildew can build up underneath your stopper and in your drain, eventually causing clogs. An easy way to combat this kind of buildup in your drain is to pour a pot of boiling water down each of your drains once a week. Watch what you put down your drain. It goes without saying that things like hair and food remnants can go a long way in clogging your drain and fast. But did you know that you should NEVER pour hot grease down a drain? When hot grease cools off, it hardens, and it is all too easy for that hardened grease to stick to your plumbing pipes and clog your drain. Additionally, be wary of drain cleaning chemicals; they 7 5 Things You Should Know Before You Hire a Local Plumber
can erode your pipes over time and cause more serious issues than a clogged drain. Why Copper Plumbing? Copper plumbing has been the gold standard of plumbing materials for over seventy years now, from the time of its inception. Although a number of alternatives have been developed in the hopes of competing with copper, nothing measures up, and copper plumbing is currently installed in approximately eighty percent of all American homes. If your home does not have copper plumbing, then you may want to consider an upgrade the next time you must call your plumber in for repair work. Here s why: Copper is reliable. Copper is not a man-made material, and it therefore does not break-down over time as synthetics do. Generally speaking, copper plumbing joints do not leak. Copper is also noncorrosive, and a properly installed copper plumbing system can easily outlast the building it is installed in. Copper plumbing is easy to install. It is a soft metal that can easily be bent and manipulated to fit into even the tightest or most awkwardlyshaped areas. Additionally, copper piping is thin-walled, and therefore narrow in diameter. Both of these qualities make for easy installation. 8 5 Things You Should Know Before You Hire a Local Plumber
Copper is relatively inexpensive. While copper plumbing may cost a little more initially, for the material itself, copper is relatively inexpensive when you consider other factors. For one, copper requires little to no maintenance and is least likely to require plumber repairs. Secondly, because copper is bendable, you don t have to pay extra for joint and connection hardware. Lastly, because copper is easy to install, you will save money on labor. Copper protects the purity and safety of your water. As previously mentioned, copper is non-corrosive; it is also biostatic (meaning it prevents the growth of bacteria) and manufactured without lead, so it won t contaminate your water. Additionally, copper supports a naturally balanced ph level perfect for water that may be too acidic (a common condition of city water supplies). 9 5 Things You Should Know Before You Hire a Local Plumber
Services Your Local Plumber Should Offer As you know by now, your plumbing system includes a number of different elements, all dependent on each other for the overall functioning of your home s water delivery and waste drainage. Therefore, your local plumber must be knowledgeable and skilled in a variety of areas. What can you expect from a plumbing professional? Here are some basic services your local plumber should offer: Drain cleaning. As previously mentioned, clogged drains are a number one concern for homeowners in need of a plumber. Whether your problem is related to buildup or a stoppage further down into your piping, a plumber will be able to identify the cause and get your drain back to functioning order. Leak repair. Any time you have a water leak, it is imperative that you get it repaired as quickly as possible, before it causes more serious problems. Your local plumber will not only be able to repair your leaks, but will also make recommendations for how to prevent further leakage. Sewage and drainage cleaning. All of your indoor plumbing is connected to an outdoor sewage and drainage system. If this system gets full or blocked up, it could overflow into your yard and make it impossible to drain water and waste away from your home. Your local 10 5 Things You Should Know Before You Hire a Local Plumber
plumber can clean and drain this system, and make repairs if it is blocked or clogged. Frozen pipes. If your home is not properly winterized, you could experience frozen pipes, which could lead to a burst pipe and subsequent water damage. Your plumber can thaw frozen pipes and repair damage caused by burst pipes. Pipe installation. Whether you are building a new house and installing plumbing for the first time, repairing damaged pipes, or replacing old pipe for new, your plumber can handle the job. How to Choose a Plumber for Your Plumbing Job Ask around. The best way to find a reputable plumber is to ask people you trust who they might recommend. Also, call local builders, real estate agents, and plumbing supply stores to find out who they use and/or send their clients to. Research online. You can round out your list of candidates by searching for local plumbers online. Additionally, you should be able to find a great deal of information to help you weed out the good from the bad by searching online for customer reviews Things You Should Know Before You Hire a Local Plumber
Licensing. Ask candidates for their license numbers. Then go online and search your state s licensing board to verify the validity of the license. Plumbers must submit to a background screening and pass a plumbing competency examination in order to obtain licensing, so this is a great place to start when narrowing down your candidates to a list of favorites. Interview candidates. Ask about years of experience, type of experience (commercial or residential, for example), and specializations. Also, make sure to get references that you can call on. Call references. Remember that a plumber s level of customer service, workmanship, accountability, and timeliness are just as important as years of experience. Therefore, when you call on references, be sure to do a thorough job of asking questions, so that you get the complete picture regarding your plumbing candidates. Obtain bids from the remaining candidates. Your final step in choosing a local plumber should be obtaining bids from those few that you have left after narrowing your candidates down to a manageable list through the previous steps. A complete bid should include number of labor hours, types and amount of materials used, and an estimated time of completion for the job. If you do all of your homework before you get to this part of the selection process, then your ultimate decision should come down to choosing the most reasonable bid Things You Should Know Before You Hire a Local Plumber
Conclusion As you can see, there is a lot to think about before you hire a local plumber. Getting informed and making the right choices now can save you a lot of time, hassle, and money down the line. Keep the things you learned in this report in mind when considering your plumbing needs, and remember that you are not an expert; therefore, when in doubt, always opt to call on the services of a plumber. Your home s plumbing is a major investment, and one that you will need to last for many years to come. Don t take any chances with faulty plumbing materials or installation.
