Outline Having an eye to establish the world s best wireless broadband environment, the MIC has conducted R&D for Expansion of Radio Frequency Resources to develop technologies for the efficient use of frequencies and the promotion of joint use of frequencies with the aim of relaxing the condition surrounding of frequencies less than 6GHz, which are used very densely. The MIC will hold a presentation of achievements of seven R&D theses that were completed in FY2011 and facilitate the exchange of various opinions on measures for further use of the achievements between researchers and parties concerned. 2. 2 *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* STATISTICS State of Use of Communications in Japan in Terms of Traffic Quick estimation of state of use in FY2011 The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) has compiled a quick estimation of voice communications traffic data for FY2011 as reported from telecommunications carriers based on the provisions of the Rules for Reporting on Telecommunications Business (Ministerial Ordinance of MPT No.46 of 1988), and officially announces it. 1. Background The MIC requests telecommunications carriers to provide reports on the state of traffic, etc. related to their telecommunications services, based on the provisions of the Rules for Reporting on Telecommunications Business. A quick estimation of voice communications traffic data for FY2011 was compiled and it is officially announced herein. Please note that numerical values may change in the final report. 2. Purpose This survey aims to grasp the trends of use of telecommunications services based on objective and reliable data in order to consider on the state of telecommunication services that are essential for people s lives and social and economic activities, as well as to deepen users understanding of telecommunications services by officially announcing data thereof. 3. Main points (1) As for domestic communications, both the total number of communications and the total communication time decreased. (2) Both the number of communications and the communication time from IP telephones have been on an upward trend. (3) Although both the number of communications and the communication time from mobile phones turned to a downward trend, mobile phones still account for more than 50% by ratio of type of transmission. (4) Both the number of communications and the communication time from PHS turned to an upward trend. *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* STATISTICS Results of 2012 Basic Survey on the Information and Communications Industry (preliminary report) The Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications (MIC) and the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) compiled the third survey results (preliminary report) of the Basic Survey on the Information and Communications Industry as a joint survey program to comprehensively grasp the information and communications industry of Japan, and officially announces it. 1. Outline of results
3 (1) Outline of companies that engage in the information and communications business - The number of companies that engage in the information and communications business (all companies that engage in any information and communications business, regardless of whether it is their main business) was 5,371. The sales related to the information and communications business in FY2011 amounted to 41,078.1 billion yen (total sales of all companies were 62,406 billion yen), and the sales related to the information and communications business of the companies which responded to the survey for two consecutive years were 38,720 billion yen (a 1.6% increase from the previous fiscal year). The telecommunications business reported the highest sales, followed by the software industry, and the information processing and service business. These three sectors accounted for 77.4% of the total sales of the information and communications business. - The number of information and communications companies (companies whose sales predominantly come from the information and communications business) was 4,643, and their sales totaled 42,270.5 billion yen (the sales from the information and communications business were 38,711.9 billion yen). The sales per company were 9.1 billion yen (a 5.3% decrease from the previous fiscal year), with the highest figure indicated by telecommunications companies, followed by newspaper companies and publishing companies. (2) Telecommunications and broadcasting businesses The number of companies that engage in the telecommunications and the broadcasting businesses was 961, and their sales in FY2011 totaled 16,302.5 billion yen. The companies which responded to the survey for two consecutive years showed 15,582.9 billion (a 0.5% decrease from the previous fiscal year). When looking at data by business category, the sales were 13,255.5 billion yen for the telecommunications business, 1,902.5 billion yen for the private broadcasting business, and billion yen for the cablecasting business. (3) Broadcasting program production business The number of companies that engage in the broadcasting program production business was 299, and their sales in FY2011 totaled billion yen. The sales of the companies which responded to the survey for two consecutive years amounted to billion yen (a 2.4% increase from the previous fiscal year). Companies whose capital is less than 50 million yen accounted for more than 70% of them, and those with less than 100 workers accounted for more than 90%. (4) Internet based service business The number of companies that engage in the Internet based service business was 523, and their sales in FY2011 amounted to 1,255 billion yen, (a 6.9% increase from the previous fiscal year). This was an increase for two consecutive years. The sales of the companies which responded to the survey for two consecutive years among them marked 1,099.9 billion yen (a 13.4% increase from the previous fiscal year). The sales per company increased to 2.4 billion yen (a 4.9% increase from the previous fiscal year). (5) Information service business The number of companies that engage in the information service business was 3,312, and their sales in FY2011 were 13,097.5 billion yen (an 8.0% increase from the previous fiscal year). This was an increase for two consecutive years. The sales of the companies which responded to the survey for two consecutive years marked 11,460.3 billion yen (a 3.7% increase from the previous fiscal year). When looking at data by business category, entrusted software development companies marked the highest sales. The sales per company increased to 3.95 billion yen (a 0.3% increase from the previous fiscal year), marking an increase for two consecutive years.
4 (6) Video picture, sound information and character information production business The number of companies that engage in the video picture, sound information and character information production business was 613, and their sales in FY2011 were 2,595.9 billion yen (a 16.7% increase over the previous fiscal year). This was an increase for two consecutive years. The sales of the companies which responded to the survey for two consecutive years marked 2,007 billion yen (unchanged from the previous fiscal year). When looking at data by business category, newspaper publishers marked the highest sales. The sales per company were 4.23 billion yen (an 8.8% decrease from the previous fiscal year), and all business categories except newspaper publishers marked a decrease. Note: The data indicated in this document are preliminary, so may be subject to change. 2. Outline of the survey (1) Purpose This survey is to reveal corporate activities in the information and communications industry of Japan and to obtain fundamental data for information and communications policies. (2) Surveying organizations MIC and METI (3) Business types and criteria for the survey Businesses whose amount of capital or investment is more than 30 million yen or more (*) and that engage in the information and communications industry (telecommunications industry, broadcasting industry, broadcasting program production industry, Internet-based service industry, information service industry, video picture, sound information and character information production industry) *However, the survey covers all registered telecommunications carriers in the telecommunications industry, all private broadcasters in the broadcasting industry, and all businesses in the broadcasting program production industry (television and radio program production industry).
