3 Introduction According to the BMJ (formerly known as the British Medical Journal), physicians walk six miles per day, or more when they are on call while they make their rounds through the hospital to treat patients. Nurses, though typically working in an assigned unit, still log an average of two to three miles per day, according to a study published by Kaiser-Permanente. Given the mobile nature of work involved in the healthcare services, there lies a high degree of demand for mobile access of patient information. Many organizations such as Kaiser Permanente, Sutter Health, Partners HealthCare and the Veterans Administration have recognized how mobile tools can improve the delivery of care.
