3 SPRING 2016 REGISTRATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR CURRENTLY ENROLLED STUDENTS STUDENTS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO REGISTER FOR CLASSES UNLESS THEY HAVE MET WITH THEIR ADVISOR. IF THERE ARE ANY HOLDS LISTED IN YOUR MY.TLU.EDU STUDENT ACCOUNT, YOU MUST CLEAR THEM PRIOR TO REGISTRATION. Step I - Course Selection 1) Go to my.tlu.edu and sign in to your student account. Click on the Student tab, and select Registration and Advising. You will find information there on registering for courses. 2) See your academic advisor and get clearance for online registration. 3) Check the Registration Holds portion of the Registration and Advising page in your my.tlu.edu account. If you have holds, you must get them cleared with the appropriate office before you can register. 4) Students have a designated registration time based on the number of hours earned. Your online registration time is displayed for you in your my.tlu.edu student account, on the Registration and Advising page, in the Registration Times Info section. Call the Registrar s Office at ) Make-up registration and schedule changes may be made December Step II - Payment of Fees A bill will be mailed to the student s permanent home address in December. Students may choose to pay in full or submit the first installment of the monthly payment plan by January 4, Payments must be made online via credit card or e-check at my.tlu.edu. IF PAYMENT OR PAYMENT ARRANGEMENTS ARE NOT MADE BY JANUARY 4, HOUSING RESERVATIONS AND CLASS SCHEDULES MAY BE DELETED! A $50 late fee will be assessed to all students who do not return requested billing materials and meet the initial payment deadline. Step III - Required Check-in Students who have completed Steps I and II must check-in online January 7-10 th using their mytlu student portal. Every student must check-in. Students who have holds on their account can check-in in person in the Office of Registration & Records on January 12 th. Students who do not check-in before January 12 th will have their schedule deleted. Step IV Schedule Changes Students who wish to add or drop a course may make schedule changes on my.tlu.edu, or in the Registrar s Office, beginning Tuesday, January 12th, To change your schedule online, you must be cleared by your advisor and be a fulltime student. 2
4 NEW STUDENT & LATE REGISTRATION Late registration takes place in the Registrar s Office (BC 101) January 12-19, 2016, from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. A late registration fee of $100 is assessed for all late registrations. The last day to register for the Spring 2016 semester is Tuesday, January 19th. REGISTRATION INFO ADVISING New students will submit a New Student Registration Form and a schedule will be created using the information provided on the form. Once new students arrive for classes, changes can be made in the Registrar s Office. Returning students should visit their mytlu account, print off a copy of a registration card and a transcript, and see their advisor for registration clearance. Students meet with their academic advisor to discuss course selection and receive registration clearance. REGISTRATION Students may register between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m January Returning students who have been cleared by their advisor may register online using mytlu. New students needing a schedule change should go to the Registrar s Office. PAYMENT Payment in full, or the 1 st installment (40%) if using the payment plan, will be due at the time of registration. Refer to the TLU catalog for information regarding tuition, fees, and refund policies. MENINGITIS VACCINATION All new students under the age of 22 are required by Texas law to provide proof of bacterial meningitis vaccination at least 10 days prior to the start of the term. The vaccination or booster must have occurred during the five-year period preceding the start of the term. FAMILY EDUCATIONAL RIGHTS AND PRIVACY ACT (RPA) complies with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of This act is designed to protect the privacy of a student s educational records and the right of a student to his/her records. The Student Handbook and the TLU Bulletin both describe the policies that govern maintenance of and access to a student s personal and academic records. The policy permits disclosure of educational records under certain limited circumstances and routine disclosures, at the University s discretion of information defined by the University as directory information. Texas Lutheran defines directory information as the following: name, address, phone number, major, minor, photo, participation in sports, height and weight of athletes, degree candidacy, degrees and awards received, number of registered hours, classification, academic honors, dates of attendance, campus address, photographic/videotaped images, and previous colleges attended. You have the right to prevent the disclosure of directory information by filing a request in writing in the Office of Registration and Records on the Request to Prevent Disclosure of Directory Information form (which is available in the Registrar s office). Such a request is good for one semester only. assumes no liability for any actions or results that come from honoring your instructions that the information be withheld. 3
5 Additional Schedule Information General Education Requirements The general education curriculum has 3 parts: foundation courses, distribution courses, and competencies (and associated skills). Below are the requirements for each of the three areas. The Foundations (21 hours) Basic Quantitative Literacy: MATH 130 or higher Critical Reading: FREX134 Engaging Faith Traditions: THEO133 Modern Language: Any modern language at the 131 level or higher Self-Awareness & Development: PRWB130 Written Communication: COMP131 & COMP132 The Distributions (30 hours) Arts 6 hours from the following: ARTS130, DRAM, MUSI, VART Humanities 6 hours from the following: HUMA130, ENGL, GEOG, HIST, MAST, PHIL, WOST No more than 3 hours can be taken in any one discipline Natural Sciences & Math 6 hours from the following: NSCI 140, BIOL, CHEM, ENVS, MATH, PHYS, STAT At least one natural science course must have a lab No more than 4 hours can be taken in any one discipline Professional Applications 3 hours from the following: BUSI, COMM, CSCI, EDUC, ENGR, ISYS, KINS Cultural Perspective & Religion 3 hours from the following: CHIN, FREN, GERM, GREK, HEBR, PORT, SPAN, THEO Social Sciences 6 hours from the following: SSCI130, CRCJ, ECON, POLS, PSYC, SOCI No more than 3 hours can be taken in any one discipline The Competencies Through completion of the foundation and distribution courses listed above, and also through selected courses in their majors, students will be developing important competencies. Course offerings designed to meet each competency will be identified in the schedule of classes with a competency code attached to the course number. Throughout their course of study, students will be required to complete the following competencies: Critical Thinking (T) 3 courses Effective Communication (C) 2 courses Engaged Citizenship (Z) 3 courses Ethics (E) 1 course Competencies are identified in the fourth component of the course number. For example, VART C is an Art Appreciation course that can be counted toward completion of the Effective Communication competency requirement. Some courses will not have a competency. For example, GEOG is a Geography course that does not satisfy a competency requirement. 4
6 Activity Modules Activity modules stretch the educational experience beyond traditional academic boundaries by providing students structured learning experiences outside of the classroom that help them advance toward achievement of the competencies. For more detailed information and a meeting schedule for each module, go to the Student Life page of mytlu. COCR HELP! How Do I Study? L. Cradit Ever find yourself studying for hours only to do poorly on an exam, even though you think you are prepared? Maybe the strategies you use need some updating. This module will allow you to look critically at how you currently study, and it will help you develop better strategies for the more complex college environment. COCR Starlit Discussion Series D. Braaten This module supports the Engaged Citizenship competency. Specifically, the student will attend all of the Starlit Discussion Series over the course of the Spring semester. The topics of these focus on current political issues. Each discussion picks a topic, and brings in a range of experts who can provide perspectives during the group discussion. COCR Make Fitness Count D. Roberts Students who register for Make Fitness Count would be required to attend an orientation session, participate in pre and post fitness testing and participate in fitness activities at least twice a week for 30 minutes (9 hours for a 9 week program) or three times a week for six weeks. These activities would/could include using the fitness center, swimming laps at the pool, attending a non-credit fitness class, such as Zumba or Yoga. Up to five athletic practices may count toward the required exercise sessions. The students will keep an exercise journal to be turned in twice during the module. COCR Sophomore Connection M. Harvey/L. Cradit Sophomore Connection is a special program developed to guide sophomores through the college decision-making process, connect with their peers, and help establish a sense of identity and pride during the second year at TLU. Topics explored may include academic and career decisions, study abroad opportunities, community service and an investigation of meaning, purpose and identity. **Pre-Req : You must have credit hours to participate in the module.** COCR Got Your Six B. Wilson/L. Cradit "Got Your Six" means we've got your back! Student Veterans, we thank you for your service and encourage you to register for this module which will ease your transition into the TLU culture and provide strategies, tactics and fellowship for your new mission here at TLU and in the civilian professional world. **Pre-Req: You should only take this module if you have previously been on active military duty. This module is not for dependents of veterans. ** COCR Biology Seminars A. Lievens This module will allow you to learn about topics in various disciplines in the field of Biology by listening to a variety of speakers. You will reflect (in writing) on these talks. You may hear about post-graduate possibilities in Biology and how you might work toward any of these that you might find interesting. COCR Student Health 101 C. Anderson Read Student Health 101 and watch Tobacco 101 with your peers and learn how to look at health promotion materials with a critical eye. COCR Number Sense Mental Math C.Beicker /R. Clark This module will teach students number sense tricks for mental computations. COCR The Latino(a) Experience S. Lopez This module supports the Engaged Citizenship competency. Who am I? Who am I in relation to others? It might be argued that everyone in today's society struggles to understand and articulate their often multiple identities. This module will look at the diverse experiences of Latino's in the United States. Through sociological reading, media, stories, community and other relevant perspectives student's will explore the social economic, cultural, and political issues that affected the Latino life. The module is designed to be a highly interactive; requiring every student to participate and explore their own culture and experiences. 5
7 Activity Modules (cont.) COCR Volunteer Income Tax Clinic S. Cook This module supports the Engaged Citizenship competency. Make a difference in the community by preparing tax returns for low and middle income taxpayers from the local area. Gain experience working with the actual clients and apply accounting to solve real world problems. The Clinic will be open Wednesdays from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. and Saturdays 9:00 a.m. to noon. Volunteer for at least 10 hours to get credit for this module. **Pre-Req: Must have passed the IRS online tax qualification exam. ** COCR Diverse Worship Styles K. Stewart Diverse Worship Styles will give you the opportunity to learn more about Christian denominations. Visit worship services of churches you ve never experienced and notice differences in music styles, preaching styles, and participation styles. We ll meet twice as a group to discuss your observations and the theology behind worship services. Module meets on three Fridays, 1:00-2:00pm, at the Center for Servant Leadership (CSL). COCR Jefferson Elementary Tutoring R. Cunningham This module supports the Engaged Citizenship competency. Do you enjoy working with younger kids? We need you! As part of this module, you ll be partnered with a teacher at Jefferson Elementary to mentor and tutor students who need a little extra help. TLU students need to be available at least 30 minutes between 8:30 a.m. 2:30 p.m. on a weekly basis throughout the semester. Have fun and be a positive role module for local kids! COCR Yoga: Interfaith Spiritual Practice K. Stewart This module supports the Engaged Citizenship competency. Yoga: Interfaith Spiritual Practice will introduce you to the ancient spiritual and physical discipline of yoga. We will explore the Hindu and Buddhist roots of yoga and the ways those beliefs and practices intersect with Christianity. Our weekly yoga class will help you strengthen and stretch and find peace at the end of a busy week. Those who are new to yoga are welcome no experience is necessary! Module meets Friday from 11:30am-12:30pm in the chapel. COCR The New Career Professional B. Navarro/S. Ehrlich This module supports the Critical Thinking and Effective Communication competencies. Create a professional version of you. An overview of the concepts involved in an emerging professional. Develop a working knowledge of career information related to job market trends and personal marketing. Recognize the importance of on-going professional development. COCR Women s Basic Self-Defense Course J. Stevens This course is to provide women with basic knowledge in verbal skills, being assertive, being aware of their surroundings, and build confidence in self-defense techniques to defend against an attacker. COCR Get Your Financial Life In Order! S. Alexander This module supports the Effective Communication competency. GET YOUR FINANCIAL LI IN ORDER!...This module is for students interested in knowing and understanding basic financial information that will impact them for the rest of their lives. COCR Improve Your Sleep T. Weers Do you find yourself nodding off in class? Are you tossing and turning, not sleeping several nights out of the week? Take this module, learn how to get a better night s sleep and impress the person back home that used to have to drag you out of bed every morning. COCR Being Roman Catholic Means? K. Wych This module supports the Engaged Citizenship competency. Are you Roman Catholic and want to enhance or continue your spirituality as a student at TLU? Are you interested in finding out some things about Catholicism? Explore various aspects of Catholicism, meet other Catholic students and deepen your spirituality and understanding of the Catholic faith during this module. Note: This module will contain Sunday and Thursday dates for participation. COCR Oh, the Places You ll Go with TLU! C. Bailey This module supports the Engaged Citizenship competency. Where in the world will your TLU education take you now and in the future? Learn about the possibilities for international study and internships throughout the semester. Students will learn about the process, possible skills learned abroad, and how to put them to work in their lives after TLU. **Pre-Req: Open to first and second year students. ** 6
8 Activity Modules (cont.) COCR Past Meets Present: Flags, Statues, and Buildings D. Cottrell Past Meets Present: Flags, Statues, and Buildings will focus on recent contemporary events that connect to our country s history, in particular issues of racism and slavery. The module will incorporate historical information and analysis, numerous guest speakers, and a tour and discussion of a TLU exhibit on related themes. COCR Sweet Home Seguin A. Janicek There s A Story Here! is the motto of Seguin. Explore the story of Seguin and the historical sites written in the book True Women by Janice Woods Windle. This module will allow you to explore more of the city that TLU calls home and the history that resides in our backyard. COCR /02 So You Want to be an RA? K. Wych/T. Westmoreland/P. Mabrie This module supports the Engaged Citizenship competency. Do you want to be a RA? Students will be introduced to the basic training methods utilized during RA Training that happens in August of each year. Upon successful completion of this module, students will be interviewed for any positions that are available for RA s in the spring semester. COCR Little Libraries with Water Bottles A. Olson/J. Hoffmann This module supports the Engaged Citizenship competency. Students will be working to build a unique structure out of water bottles. The result will be at least one little free library for the Seguin community. Come get your hands dirty while making a difference to your community! COCR Cut the Chord: Basic Flatpicking Guitar S. Boehm This module supports the Effective Communication competency. The module is designed for students with basic guitar chord-playing ability who want to explore techniques for playing single string lead melodies. The ability to read music or tablature is not necessary as the class will be based on ear training and motor learning. While much of class will focus on folk, country, and traditional music, flatpicking techniques used in blues, rock, and jazz will also be explored. **Pre-Req: Students must have the use of an acoustic guitar and must know at least three basic chords. ** COCR Influencing and Persuasion Skills S. Hijazi This module supports the Effective Communication competency. The module covers the conceptual understanding of the principles of influence, source or power, generating buy-in, emotional intelligence, & influence, the value of storytelling, the difference between information and communication, and effective leadership in applying trust, Additionally, this class includes practical examples and workshops to build the students skills in handling demanding situations where influencing and persuasion are exercised. Students are expected to participate in discussion, answer questionnaires, and be ready to interact with one another. This is a highly interactive workshop with a clear framework and a clear set of strategies for influencing others. COCR Using Excel As Decision Making Tool S. Hijazi This module will increase students skills and knowledge of MS Excel Spreadsheet. MS Excel is used in all sorts of business functions. Also, this module will allow the students to meet the challenges created by dependency of businesses on information technology. Students will start by understudying and differentiate between formulas and functions, understand the aspect of decision making including goal seek, multiple scenarios, and table filtering. This module will use pivot tables to produce dashboards and slicers for quick access to information. Finally, students will understand and apply charts including bar, column, pie, line and some creative such as thermometer, speedometer, and RACI charts. COCR Professional Conference Presentation T. Sia This module supports the Effective Communication competency. This module is for students who will be presenting their research at professional conferences. It will help you create a presentation/poster to the specifications of the conference you plan on presenting at. This module will be mosty helpful for students who have already completed their research and have or are submitting it. The module will be hands on work, so arrange to have an appropriate device to work on (i.e. laptop or tablet). **Pre-Req: You must have above 27 credit hours to participate in the module. ** COCR STEM Careers R. Jonas Students in the LASER scholarship program must enroll in this module as part of their obligation for remaining in the program. We will explore career options with professionals in the STEM fields. 7
9 Activity Modules (cont.) COCR Black Experience in North America B. Buchanan This module is an opportunity to examine the Black experience in the US. As a group we will discuss articles, stories, media clips, community action, state and federal laws, and relate the information to each participants family experience. Through the discussions and information presented on the Black experience, each student will be drawn into understanding culturally relevant information which has a direct impact on them today. This module is designed to be highly interactive and selfreflective; requiring each participant to explore their own identity and cultural experiences. COCR Advanced Self-Defense Course J. Stevens This course is to provide women with advanced knowledge in verbal skills, being assertive, being aware of their surroundings, and to build confidence in advanced self-defense techniques to defend against an attacker. **Pre-Req: Must have completed COCR 172 Women s Basic Self-Defense module.** COCR Co-Ed Self-Defense Course J. Stevens This course is to provide men/women with advanced knowledge in verbal skills, being assertive, being aware of their surroundings, and to build confidence in advanced self-defense techniques to defend against an attacker. COCR Ball Early Childhood Tutoring J. Anderson This module supports the Engaged Citizenship competency. Play games with kids for 30 minutes a week and get credit! We re partnering with Ball Early Childhood Center to help 3 and 4 year olds master skills through games and be prepared for elementary school. TLU students need to be available to mentor at least 30 minutes every week between 8:30am-2:45pm. Have fun and make a difference! COCR Leadership & Lunch J. Anderson/P. Mabrie This module supports the Engaged Citizenship competency. What does it mean to be a good leader? How do teams work most effectively? We ll explore these questions through readings and interactive activities while sharing a meal together. **Pre-Req: Open to members of the Leadership & Service Living and Learning Community. ** 8

Final application deadline is December 7. A $300 non-refundable deposit is due at the time of pre-registration, payable to the TLU Business Office by cash, check, or credit card. The program fee will be added to the Spring 2016 TLU semester billing. Fees include airfare, lodging, ground transportation, group admission on planned activities, some meals, and medical insurance. All students participating in the programs abroad must be registered for the course and corresponding Lab section. 9
