3 FALL 2016 REGISTRATION INSTRUCTIONS FOR CURRENTLY ENROLLED STUDENTS STUDENTS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO REGISTER FOR CLASSES UNLESS THEY HAVE MET WITH THEIR ADVISOR. IF THERE ARE ANY HOLDS LISTED IN YOUR mytlu STUDENT ACCOUNT, YOU MUST CLEAR THOSE RIOR TO REGISTRATION. Step I - Course Selection 1) Go to mytlu and sign in to your student account. Click on the Student tab, and select Registration and Advising. You will find information there on registering for courses. 2) See your academic advisor and get clearance for online registration. Your advisor will need to change your advising flag from N to Y. 3) Check the Registration Holds portion of the Registration and Advising page in your mytlu account. If you have holds, you must get them cleared with the appropriate office before you can register. 4) Students have a designated registration time based on their number of earned hours. Your online registration time is displayed for you in your mytlu student account, on the Registration and Advising page, in the Registration Times Info section. Call the Office of Registration & Records at ) Make-up registration and schedule changes may be made April Step II - ayment of Fees A bill will be mailed to the student s permanent home address in July. Students may choose to pay in full or submit the first installment of the monthly payment plan by August 1 st, IF AYMENT OR AYMENT ARRANGEMENTS ARE NOT MADE BY AUGUST 1 st, HOUSING RESERVATIONS AND CLASS SCHEDULES MAY BE DELETED! A $50 late fee will be assessed to all students who do not meet the initial payment deadline. Step III - Required Check-in All students must check-in before they attend classes. Students who have completed Steps I and II will check-in online August using the mytlu student portal. Students who have holds that prevent them from checking-in online will check-in in-person in the Office of Registration & Records on Monday, August 22 nd. Students who do not check-in and confirm their registration will have their schedule deleted. Step IV Schedule Changes Returning students who wish to add or drop a course may make schedule changes at mytlu, or in the Office of Registration & Records, beginning Monday, August 22 nd.
4 LATE REGISTRATION Late registration takes place in the Office of Registration & Records (BC 101) on August 22-26, 2016, from 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. A late registration fee of $100 is assessed for all late registrations. The last day to register for the Fall 2016 semester is Friday, August 26 th. REGISTRATION INFO ADVISING REGISTRATION AYMENT New students will receive registration instructions during summer orientation. Returning students should visit their mytlu account, print off a copy of a registration card and a transcript, and see their advisor for registration clearance. Students meet with their academic advisor to discuss course selection and receive registration clearance. New and returning students may register between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. in the Office of Registration & Records after seeing an advisor. ayment in full, or the 1 st installment (40%) if using the payment plan, will be due at the time of registration. Refer to the TLU catalog for information regarding tuition, fees, and refund policies. FAMILY EDUCATIONAL RIGHTS AND RIVACY ACT (RA) makes every effort to comply with the Family Educational Rights and rivacy Act of This act is designed to protect the privacy of a student s educational records and the right of a student to his/her records. The Student Handbook and the TLU Bulletin both describe the policies that govern maintenance of and access to a student s personal and academic records. The policy permits disclosure of educational records under certain limited circumstances and routine disclosures, at the University s discretion of information defined by the University as directory information. Texas Lutheran defines directory information as the following: name, local, permanent and address, phone number, major, minor, photo, participation in sports, height and weight of athletes, degree candidacy, degrees and awards received, number of registered hours, classification, academic honors, dates of attendance, and previous colleges attended. You have the right to prevent the disclosure of directory information by filing a request in writing in the Office of Registration and Records on the Request to revent Disclosure of Directory Information form (which is available in the Registrar s office). Such a request is good for one semester only. assumes no liability for any actions or results that come from honoring your instructions that the information be withheld.

6 Compass Requirements Beginning in fall 2012, students who are new to TLU are required to complete a new general education curriculum called Compass. Compass has 3 parts: foundation courses, distribution courses, and competencies (and associated skills). Below are the requirements for each of the three areas. The Foundations (21 hours) Basic Quantitative Literacy: MATH 130 or higher Critical Reading: FREX134 Engaging Faith Traditions: THEO133 Modern Language: Any modern language at the 131 level or higher Self-Awareness & Development: RWB130 Written Communication: COM131 & COM132 The Distributions (30 hours) Arts 6 hours from the following: ARTS130, DRAM, MUSI, VART Humanities 6 hours from the following: HUMA130, ENGL, GEOG, HIST, MAST, HIL, WOST No more than 3 hours can be taken in any one discipline Natural & Math 6 hours from the following: NSCI 140, BIOL, CHEM, ENVS, MATH, HYS, STAT At least one natural science course must have a lab No more than 4 hours can be taken in any one discipline rofessional Applications 3 hours from the following: BUSI, COMM, CSCI, EDUC, ENGR, ISYS, KINS Cultural erspective & Religion 3 hours from the following: FREN, GREK, HEBR, SAN, THEO Social 6 hours from the following: SSCI130, CRCJ, ECON, OLS, SYC, SOCI No more than 3 hours can be taken in any one discipline The Competencies Through completion of the foundation and distribution courses listed above, and also through selected courses in their majors, students will be developing important competencies. Course offerings designed to meet each competency will be identified in the schedule of classes with a competency code attached to the course number. Students will be required to take courses with the following competencies: Critical Thinking (T): 3 courses Effective Communication (C): 2 courses Engaged Citizenship (Z): 3 courses Ethics (E): 1 course Competencies are identified in the fourth component of the course number. For example, VART C is an Art Appreciation course that meets the Effective Communication competency requirement. Some courses will not have a competency. For example, GEOG is a Geography course that does not satisfy a competency requirement.
7 Reflective Activity Modules Reflective activity modules stretch the educational experience beyond traditional academic boundaries by providing students structured learning experiences outside of the classroom that help them advance toward achievement of the competencies. Module requirements are: Four modules are required for graduation. All incoming freshmen take the freshmen experience module during their first semester of enrollment with the remaining three modules determined by the student referably the majority of modules are completed by the end of sophomore year For every 15 hours transferred in, one less module would be needed (hours earned from an institution of higher education, not A, IB, or Dual Credit hours) Modules are offered during the fall and spring semesters and registration runs concurrently with class registration Modules run a maximum of 12 weeks and are assessed as Credit/No Credit Reflective Activity Module Descriptions To determine meeting times and locations for reflective activity modules, go to the mytlu portal and click on Student Life. COCR , aw rint M. Harvey This module supports the Self-Awareness and Development foundation. The aw rint module is required for all incoming students enrolled in the (FREX 134) course. This module will focus on first-year students understanding of why they have decided to get a higher education degree, what they want to do with it to better their life and community, and how they are going to get it done (graduate). Students will discuss the concepts of liberal arts and vocation and complete a comprehensive education plan for their upcoming college years. **re-req: Enrolled in FREX 134 Fall 2016.** COCR , HEL! How Do I Study? L. Cradit This module supports the Critical Thinking competency. Ever found yourself studying for hours only to do poorly on an exam, even though you thought you were prepared? Maybe the strategies you use need some updating. This module will allow you to look critically at how you currently study, and it will help you develop better strategies for the more complex college environment. COCR , Starlit Discussions D. Braaten This module supports the Global Citizenship competency. This module develops the competency of Global Citizenship. Specifically, the student will attend all the Starlit Discussion Series events over the course of the Fall semester. The topic for these discussions focuses on current political and social issues. Each event picks a topic and brings in a range of perspectives on which the students will discuss and debate in an intelligent and civil manner. COCR , Watoto = Children R. Shao This module supports the Global Citizenship competency. Ever wanted to make a difference in another part of the world? Here s your opportunity! Help organize and run a kickball tournament to raise funds and awareness for orphans affected by AIDS in Tanzania. COCR , Make Fitness Count D. Roberts This module supports the Self-Awareness and Development foundation. Students who register for Make Fitness Count are required to attend an orientation session, participate in pre and post fitness testing, write a fitness contract, and participate in fitness activities at least twice a week for 30 minutes (8 hours for a 8-week program) or three times a week for five + weeks. These activities would/could include using the fitness center, swimming laps at the pool, attending a non-credit fitness class, such as Zumba or Yoga. Up to four athletic practices may count toward the required exercise sessions. The students will keep an exercise journal in the fitness center to record their workouts. COCR , Muslim Journeys A. Koford This module supports the Global Citizenship competency. Islam is one of the world s major religions how much do you know about it? Deepen your understanding of Muslim beliefs and cultures through this module. We will watch and discuss several films that depict the diversity of Muslim experiences around the world.
8 Module Descriptions (cont.) COCR , Sophomore Connection M. Harvey/L. Cradit This module supports the Self-Awareness and Development foundation. Sophomore Connection is a special program developed to guide sophomores through the college decision-making process, connect with their peers, and help establish a sense of identity and pride during the second year at TLU. Topics explored may include academic and career decisions, study abroad opportunities, community service and an investigation of meaning, purpose and identity. **re-req: You must have credit hours to participate in the module.** COCR , Basic olicing S. Boehm/G. Hopper This module supports the Ethics competency. Thinking about a career in law enforcement, or just curious about how the men and women in blue really operate? Dispel mediadriven myths and learn about the realities of police work. Completing this module will qualify you to do volunteer work with the TLU police department. COCR , Jefferson Elementary Tutoring R. Cunningham This module supports the Global Citizenship competency. Do you enjoy working with younger kids? We need you! As part of this module, you ll be partnered with a teacher at Jefferson Elementary to mentor and tutor students who need a little extra help. TLU students need to be available at least 30 minutes between 8:30am 2:30pm on a weekly basis throughout the semester. Have fun and be a positive role model for local kids! COCR , Reducing Stress T. Sia This module supports the Self-Awareness and Development foundation. College is a high stress environment. Handling stress effectively is necessary to personal well-being and success in college. Many of students favorite stress relief is either too time consuming or not available at particularly stressful times of the semester. This module will focus on developing a set of evidence based stress reduction techniques that can fit within half hour or less time blocks. Students will practice and develop specialized skills in progressive muscle relaxation, deep breathing, mental focusing techniques (RAFTing) and guided imagery (Mindplay). COCR , Get Your Financial Life In Order!!! S. Alexander This module supports the Effective Communication competency. GET YOUR FINANCIAL LI IN ORDER!...This module is for students interested in knowing and understanding basic financial information that will impact them for the rest of their lives. COCR , Improve Your Sleep T. Weers This module supports the Critical Thinking competency. Do you find yourself nodding off in class? Are you tossing and turning, not sleeping several nights out of the week? Take this module, learn how to get a better night s sleep and impress the person back home that used to have to drag you out of bed every morning. COCR , Oh, the laces You ll Go with TLU! C. Bailey This module supports the Global Citizenship competency. Where in the world will your TLU education take you now and in the future? Learn about the possibilities for international study and internships throughout the semester. Students will learn about the process, possible skills learned abroad, and how to put them to work in their lives after TLU. COCR , Ball Early Childhood Tutoring R. Cunningham This module supports the Global Citizenship competency. lay games with kids for 30 minutes a week and get credit! We re partnering with Ball Early Childhood Center to help 3- and 4- year-olds master skills through games and be prepared for elementary school. TLU students need to be available to mentor at least 30 minutes every week between 8:30am-2:45pm. Have fun and make a difference! COCR 199, What s the Zoo Saying? R. Bisha This module supports the Critical Thinking competency. This module deepens our experience of a visit of the San Antonio Zoo with a behind the scenes view and concentration on the presentations and sign that teach us about the animals. We will consider the arguments presented about how the world around us works as we practice collecting and analyzing data and practicing in an informed conversation on important questions of our time. COCR 200, Social Justice and Tea. Mabrie This module supports the Self-Awareness and Development foundation. This module will allow the students to gain a better understanding of the meaning of social justice and their role in making TLU an even more inclusive community. Students participating in this module will explore their own identity and biases as well as gain information about the following concepts: microagression, ableism, ageism, privilege, sexual orientation, race, religion and gender.
