3 ABOUT OUR KEYNOTE The Honorable Michelle K. Lee The Honorable Michelle K. Lee, Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the United States Patent and Trademark Office provides leadership and oversight to one of the largest intellectual property offices in the world. Ms. Lee serves as a principal advisor to the Secretary of Commerce on both domestic and international intellectual property matters, and provides leadership and oversight of the day-to-day management of the policy, budget, and operations for an agency of almost 12,000 employees. She also promotes innovation domestically and drives international harmonization efforts, in support of the administration s top economic priorities to increase economic growth. Prior to her role as Director, Ms. Lee was Deputy Director, and also served as the first Director of the Silicon Valley United States Patent and Trademark Office where she was responsible for establishing and leading the Silicon Valley office as well as advising the USPTO on a variety of policy matters. Before becoming the Director of the Silicon Valley office, Ms. Lee served by appointment of the U.S. Secretary of Commerce on the USPTO s Patent Public Advisory Committee, which advises the USPTO on patent policies, goals, performance and operations. The San Francisco Business Times and San Jose Business Journal recognized Ms. Lee as Best Bay Area IP Lawyer in 2012 and one of the top 100 most influential women in the Silicon Valley in Ms. Lee has spent most of her professional career advising some of the country s most innovative companies on technical, legal and business matters. Prior to joining the USPTO, Ms. Lee served as Deputy General Counsel for Google and was the company s first Head of Patents and Patent Strategy. She also served as a partner at the Silicon Valley-based law firm of Fenwick and West, where she specialized in advising a wide range of high-technology clients from start-ups to Fortune 100 companies on patent law, intellectual property, litigation and corporate matters. Prior to her career as a legal advisor to technology companies, Ms. Lee worked in the federal judiciary, serving as a law clerk for the Honorable Vaughn R. Walker on the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California where she worked on the precedent-setting Apple v. Microsoft copyright infringement case. As a law clerk for the Honorable Paul R. Michel on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, Ms. Lee worked on many patent and trademark appeals. Before building her legal career, Ms. Lee worked as a computer scientist at Hewlett-Packard Research Laboratories, as well as at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (M.I.T.) Artificial Intelligence Laboratory. She holds a B.S. and an M.S. in electrical engineering and computer science from M.I.T., as well as a J.D. from Stanford Law School. Jeff Joyner Jeff Joyner s experience includes patent, trademark, and copyright litigation, trials, appeals, enforcement, protection and licensing. He also focuses on technology, including green technologies, entertainment, Internet and new media law. 5 Kathi Vidal (Lutton) As a principal at Fish & Richardson, Kathi Vidal (formerly Lutton) leads and tries high-profile, high-stakes patent litigation. 8 Lisa Buccino Lisa Buccino is a Director in SAP s Global Litigation Group in Palo Alto. Originally from Portland, Oregon, Lisa graduated from the University of Washington in Seattle before obtaining her J.D. from Santa Clara University School of Law. Lisa joined SAP in 2008 after nearly 10 years at Howrey LLP representing numerous Fortune 500 clients in high-stakes patent and trademark cases. Now at SAP, the world s largest enterprise software company, Lisa is responsible for managing international and domestic litigation matters, including pre-litigation disputes, trials, appeals and data security related investigations. Henry Bunsow With over three decades of experience trying some of the most difficult and important patent cases, Henry Bunsow has built a reputation as one of the country s top IP trial lawyers. 9 Steve Chiang Steve Chiang is Director of Patent Analysis and IP Counsel at RPX Corporation, where he is responsible for technical and legal analysis of patent portfolios in consultation with the company s patent acquisitions team. Additionally, he manages day-to-day operations of RPX s validity challenges. Before joining RPX, he worked in private practice on patent prosecution and litigation support including reexaminations. Ted Dane Ted Dane is a partner in the Los Angeles office of Munger, Tolles & Olson. Mr. Dane s principal areas of practice are intellectual property, with an emphasis on patent litigation and antitrust. In the patent area, Mr. Dane has represented a variety of client, including Abbott Laboratories, Microsoft, Southern California Edison, Takeda Pharmaceuticals and Verizon, in diverse technological areas including avionics, digital security software, medical devices, pharmaceutical products, radio frequency identification devices, telecommunications, and wireless networks. Mr. Dane received his A.B. degree in English in 1986 from Harvard University (magna cum laude), where he was elected to Phi Beta Kappa. Mr. Dane received his J.D. in 1989 from Stanford University, where he was elected to the Order of the Coif. Mr. Dane served as a law clerk to the Honorable Harry Edwards of the District of Columbia Court of Appeals during the term. In addition to his work at Munger Tolles, Mr. Dane also worked spent a brief sojourn as in-house counsel for Warner Bros. Craig Davis Craig Davis is a Senior Litigation Counsel at HP Inc., where he manages IP, regulatory, commercial, and other disputes. Prior to joining HP, Craig spent 13 years as a litigator at several firms in the San Francisco Bay Area. 10 Jim DeCarlo James J. DeCarlo is an Intellectual Property Shareholder in Greenberg Traurig s New York and New Jersey offices. A registered patent attorney and Electrical Engineer, he is actively involved in virtually all aspects of intellectual property counseling. Jim s experience includes litigating patent matters in District Courts around the country, handling matters before the PTAB, counseling clients on the strategic use and manage ment of intellectual property assets and drafting infringement, validity and freedom to operate opinions. For over twenty years, her practice has focused on litigation in software and electrical fields. She is an experienced trial attorney. Her firm understanding of what matters at trial and what it takes to effectively communicate about any issue, ranging from the most complicated technical issue to an emotionally charged employment issue, enables her to develop and pursue successful strategies for her clients. 11 Hon. James Donato Judge James Donato sits in the San Francisco courthouse for the Northern District of California. He was nominated by President Barack Obama on January 6, 2014, to a seat vacated by James Ware, and confirmed by the Senate on February 25, Prior to his federal judicial service, he was a partner and trial lawyer at Shearman & Sterling LLP and in private practice for over 20 years. He graduated with a B.A. from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1983, an A.M. from Harvard University in 1984 and a J.D. from Stanford Law School in He served as a judicial law clerk to the Hon. Procter R. Hug, Jr., United States Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, Margaret P. Kammerud Meg Kammerud is of counsel in Steptoe & Johnson s Palo Alto office, where she is a member of the Intellectual Property Group. Ms. Kammerud has wide-ranging experience in patent, copyright, and trade secret matters. 12 Imran Khaliq Imran Khaliq is a senior intellectual property litigation director at a leading technology company in Silicon Valley and teaches patent licensing and enforcement at USF School of Law. He has effectively handled patent, trade secret, copyright, Lanham Act, and business tort cases in courts and agencies throughout the U.S., including federal and state courts in California, Texas, New York, Delaware, the International Trade Commission (ITC), the USPTO, the Patent Trial and Appeals Board, and in appeals before the Federal Circuit and 9th Circuit Court of Appeals. As a USTPO registered patent attorney, he routinely assists high-tech clients, start-ups, and entrepreneurs build, protect, license, and enforce their patent portfolios across a diverse spectrum of technologies. He has been quoted frequently in the press on IP issues and cases and has published numerous articles in leading legal publications such as Westlaw, Bloomberg, and the Daily Journal. Khaliq has also served as an expert and consultant on IP cases, lectures on patent law topics at the University of San Francisco, and has presented at several CLE events before leading corporations and bar associations. This year he was also elected to serve on the Board of Governors at the University of San Francisco School of Law. Jeff Kichaven Jeff Kichaven is an independent mediator with a nationwide practice and extensive experience and expertise in intellectual property cases. He has been honored as California Lawyer Attorney of the Year in ADR and has been named to the Daily Journal s list of California Top Neutrals list eight times. 13 Jamie Laird Jamie Ledet Laird is a Senior Trial Consultant at Douglas Green Associates. She specializes in witness preparation, jury selection, and assisting attorneys at trial, as well as mock trial and focus group research. She is skilled in identifying case themes and developing effective case strategy for complex litigation. Jamie received her Master s degree in Communication Studies with a main concentration in Legal Communication from the University of Kansas where she was also an undergraduate public speaking instructor. Doug Lumish Doug Lumish, global co-chair of Latham s Intellectual Property Litigation Group, is a trial lawyer with experience litigating complex patent cases for the world s leading technology companies. He has won jury trials and summary judgments to defeat billions of dollars in claims against his clients, including jury verdicts for Arista Networks, Symantec, Skype, TransPerfect, Google/YouTube, Microsoft, Oracle and others. Dwayne Mason Dwayne L. Mason serves as the Head of the Texas Intellectual Property Litigation Practice at Greenberg Traurig. Dwayne s practice focuses on patent, trademark, copyright, trade secret and technology-based commercial litigation. Dwayne also manages patent and trademark portfolios, and assists companies in protecting and commercializing their intellectual property. Dwayne has litigated numerous intellectual property disputes in various state and federal district courts, the U.S. Judicial Panel on Multidistrict Litigation, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal and 5th Circuits, and in domestic and international arbitration proceedings before the American Arbitration Association and International Chamber of Commerce. 14 Stephen McGrath Stephen is Senior Corporate Counsel in T-Mobile s Litigation Group, where he manages patent and other intellectual property litigation and provides related strategic counseling. Prior to joining T-Mobile, Stephen served as Assistant General Counsel at Microsoft where he managed U.S. and international patent litigation in Microsoft s Litigation Group, and later handled patent counseling and licensing related issues as part of Microsoft s Innovation and Intellectual Property Group. Prior to Microsoft, Stephen practiced in the IP space at Latham & Watkins in Silicon Valley. Hon. K. Nicole Mitchell Judge Mitchell was born in Victoria, Texas. She graduated with honors from Baylor Law School after receiving both bachelors and masters degrees from Texas A&M University. While at Baylor, Judge Mitchell served as the Senior Executive Editor of the Baylor Law Review, as well as Managing Editor of the Law Review s Texas Practice Edition. After law school, Judge Mitchell clerked for the Honorable Chief Judge Leonard Davis in the Eastern District of Texas before starting her civil practice at Fulbright & Jaworski in Houston. Judge Mitchell s practice focused primarily on the area of Health Law Litigation, but she also worked on patent cases and is licensed to practice before the USPTO. After her time at Fulbright & Jaworski, Judge Mitchell returned to the Eastern District of Texas to serve as the Chief Staff Attorney to Judge Davis. Judge Mitchell was sworn in as a United States Magistrate Judge on August 16, In her time on the bench, Judge Mitchell has overseen numerous patent and general civil litigation cases. 15 Erik Puknys Erik Puknys represents clients across industries in intellectual property disputes at Finnegan Henderson. He has been named one of the top 75 IP litigators in California by the Daily Journal, and recognized as an IP Star in Palo Alto by Managing Intellectual Property and for superior client service in The 2015 BTI Client Service All-Stars. Stacy Quan Stacy Quan is an Assistant General Counsel at Microsoft Corporation, where she manages patent litigation. Before assuming her current role, Stacy handled patent counseling and pre-litigation conflicts as part of Microsoft s Intellectual Property Group. Prior to joining Microsoft, Stacy practiced intellectual property law at Nike Inc. and law firms in Los Angeles and Seattle. Ashok Ramani Ashok Ramani is an experienced trial lawyer at Keker & Van Nest who handles patent and trade-secret disputes for companies including Netflix, TSMC, Hulu, HTC, Square and Broadcom. 16 Karen Robinson Karen Robinson is Associate General Counsel, Director of Litigation at Adobe Systems Incorporated. Karen manages Adobe s in-house litigation team and oversees Adobe s worldwide docket of litigation. Before joining Adobe, Karen was Litigation Counsel at Google where she managed patent litigation for Google s Geo and Social offerings. Before coming in-house, Karen had over a decade of experience in patent litigation and was a partner in the Washington D.C. office of Kirkland & Ellis. Leslie Schafer, Ph.D. Leslie Schafer is a Senior Economist with Econ One Research, Inc. in Los Angeles, CA. As a testifying and consulting expert, Dr. Schafer applies economic analysis and econometrics to liability and damages estimation for litigation in intellectual property, antitrust, and health care matters as well as consulting for non-litigation projects. For patent, trademark, and trade secret matters, Dr. Schafer has estimated reasonable royalties and damages in a wide variety of industries such as information technology and software, personal mobile communication devices and other consumer electronics, networking hardware, pharmaceuticals, and medical research.
