6 Recent Trends in e-payments The state of Kenya Payments made using plastic cards dipped by 18.2% to Ksh. 1.1 trillion in past 11 months to November 2015 Mobile phone-based payments are eating into commercial banks business Card Transactions Mobile Transactions 18.2% % Ksh 1.4 trillion *Transacted eleven months to November 2014 Ksh 1.3 trillion Ksh 1.9 trillion Ksh 2.8 Trillion There are an estimated 17,015 point of sale (PoS) devices and 13.9 million cardholders, translating to one PoS device per 2,350 customers In perspective, these are over 121,000 agents serving M-Pesa, MobiKash, Airtel Money, yucash, Orange Money and Tangaza with 24.9 million subscribers. However, the market is still relatively unexploited; in sub-saharan Africa more than 80 percent of adults have made bill payments or remittances with cash Existing mobile money infrastructure and new technologies such as NFC put mobile strongly place to steer the future of e-payments What s Next Deeper financial inclusion making payments, especially mobile accessible Regulators in many markets are paving the way for e-money and the entry of nonbank operators Development of business models and systems for electronic remittances both domestic and international; money systems will operate within the boundaries of a single country Established payment networks such as Visa and MasterCard integrating with mobile network operators to provide mobile payment solutions in emerging markets; This is already true for Latin America where MasterCard has signed extensive agreements with Telefonica JamboPay 2015 The Unified e-payment Gateway VISIT 8
