2 The Campus Landscape: September 18, 2009 Transformation and Preservation: FS09 Illinois Institute of Technology Landscape Case Study- Now and Then Peter Lindsay Schaudt, FASLA, FAAR Hoerr Schaudt Landscape Architects, LLC TIMELINE 1. Site was Armour Institute founded by Philip Danforth Armour Sr. from Armour & Co. meat packing business. 2. Both Armour Institute and Lewis Institute in Chicago merged to create IIT after The Great Depression. 3. Mies arrived in 1938 from Germany IIT site of Armour Institute. 5. Two years before merger, Mies was offered the job of Director of the Department of Architecture at Armour Institute of Technology. 6. Within a year, AIT commissioned Mies to design an innovative Master Plan encompassing the entire campus. 7. At that time there were two previous master plans Mies plan approved First building built-minerals and Metals Research Building Building Program started new structures had gone up (7 by Mies) Campus was 65 acres Crown Hall built 14. Mies- 72 when retired from IIT (Designed 18 total buildings) 15. SOM-Partner Walter Netsch and Myron Goldsmith worked on many Projects The Campus Landscape: Transformation and Preservation- Timeline 1
3 16. Building boom ceased in 1971 and the campus remained relatively unchanged until the early 90 s. 17. Buildings deteriorating/ landscape removed and not replanted IIT convened a National Commission reviewing the school s Academic, financial and physical status Urban Land Institute studied IIT s development options which one was to relocate to Chicago s suburbs and recommend that IIT stay and leverage its south side asset of land and famous buildings. 20. Enrollment on campus dropped from 6,000 in 1970 to 3,200 by BOT approved a master plan by Dirk Lohan (Mies Grandson)- Main Idea- Have an international competition for a student campus center in the heart of the campus, to put IIT on the world architectural map again. It was a brilliant idea that worked. He proposed a long dormitory to be constructed on the eastern side of State St. between 33 rd Street and Crown Hall creating an edge to the open space across the street, in the historic core. Fulfill Mies and Alfred Caldwell vision of a campus in a park which was never realized. 22. Mid 90 s- Princeton Review ranked IIT as one of the most un-pleasant campus settings in the nation. Looking back, this was a good thing Trustees Robert Galvin and Robert Ritzier made a gift of $120 million dollar matching grant International Competition-McCormick Tribune Campus Center Won by Rem Koolhaus, of OMA 25. During this time, the Chicago Police Headquarters was built on 35 th Street and Michigan Ave., designed by Dirk Lohan. At this time the city was committing to the nearby Bronzeville community. And this project gave great confidence to the IIT trustees to invest in the campus Campus Landscape Master Plan by MVV and PLSLA 27. City of Chicago provided $7m to convert State Street into a green The Campus Landscape: Transformation and Preservation- Timeline 2
4 Corridor. Narrowing the street and planting hundreds of trees. 28. IIT launched its Mies vander Rohe Society, dedicated to preserve Mies Designed buildings Helmut Jahn-State Street Village-367 beds Campus landscape receives national ASLA honor award Restoration of Crown Hall National Historic Landmark- by Architects Krueck Sexton, Gunny Harboe and landscape architect Chandra Goldsmith Restoration of Wisnick Hall by Holabird & Root 33. Future-Restoration of the Carr Memorial Chapel by Mies. 34. Recently the entire campus, including its landscape was added to the National Register of Historic Places, so any future projects are subject to the Secretary of Interior s Standards for the Treatment of Historic Property with Guidelines for the Treatment of cultural landscapes.
