Research Scope and Methodology Geographical Regions Covered World Base year for this research service is 2010 and the forecast period is Research Methodology Primary research with vendors Frost & Sullivan published research services Frost & Sullivan Decision-Support Databases (DSD) Frost & Sullivan Country Industry Forecasts (CIF) Company websites and other secondary sources Market Scope This research service will cover the world enterprise FMC market comprised of fixed-mobile convergence (FMC) solutions offered by a broad range of participants such as PBX vendors, independent FMC vendors, handset manufacturers and service providers. Although the study forecasts the overall world shipments of enterprise smartphone units with an FMC solution, specific emphasis will be placed on premises-based FMC solutions that require a premises-based hardware or software gateway/router/server/switch to deliver call control and PBX features (e.g. single-number reach, single voic , corporate directory access, etc.), as well as, in some cases, other advanced functionalities such as mobile and corporate IM/presence, conferencing, unified messaging, and dual-mode voice call handoff (manual or automatic) between networks. Although in many cases, these premises-based FMC solutions are delivered through a thick client downloaded onto a mobile device, some deploy a thin client or a Web Browser version of the client that communicates with the premises-based FMC component (i.e. server or gateway) of the solution. The component, on the other hand, could be a fully dedicated FMC installed hardware or a software server embedded as part of a UC or telephony platform. 9
Research Scope and Methodology (Contd ) In terms of revenue, Frost & Sullivan will estimate revenues generated through the implementation of enterprise premises-based FMC solutions using an average per-user charge for all the components involved in the FMC solution - mainly built-in mobile client licenses and mobility gateways/routers/servers/switches. Hardware and software components that are not included in the estimated revenues include: - Smartphone handset revenue. - Revenues of carrier-based enterprise FMC solutions (hosted FMC solutions coming from mobile carriers such as Sprint and T-Mobile or independent FMC vendors such as Telepo and OnRelay). - Premises-based FMC solutions that only offer dual-mode roaming functionalities and do not link the corporate PBX to extend PBX features. - New mobile collaborative apps that offer meeting capabilities (e.g. WebEx), messaging features or other UC&C capabilities, but do not support FMC extension or corporate voice. - FMC solutions that are deployed with feature mobile phones, rather than smartphones. - Desktop softphones, VoWLAN single-mode devices, DECT devices, or WLAN network infrastructure. Revenues represent original FMC vendor sales of FMC solutions to distributors, retailers, resellers, OEM partners and other distribution channels, as well as direct sales to enterprise customers. Revenues only include FMC hardware and software sales. They do not include any service fees associated with maintenance programs, integration services, installation and training. Within this analysis, Frost & Sullivan has identified drivers that are contributing to the growth of the market and restraints that are deterring market penetration and revenue growth. The study highlights key technology and market trends that are impacting the world enterprise premises-based FMC solutions markets. It provides profiles of selected vendors and an analysis of the competitive landscape. The study also provides current and forecasted revenue estimates and marketshare analysis of the world enterprise FMC markets. 10
Research Scope and Methodology (Contd ) Enterprise Premises-based FMC Solutions Market: Illustration of Premises-based FMC Solutions (World), 2010 Must Have Premises-based FMC Features : -Single-number reach -Single voic -Directory Access -Basic PBX features Additional Premises-based FMC Features : -Presence/IM -Unified Messaging (UM) -Seamless Roaming -Conferencing -Social Networking Integration. IP PBX A premises-based FMC solution utilizes a premises-based component to deliver PBX and UC features to the mobile device. It may also support advanced features that enhance the total value of the solution. Source: Frost & Sullivan 11
Market Definitions Enterprise FMC Frost & Sullivan defines an enterprise FMC solution as any feature, service or product that allows a mobile device to connect with the corporate PBX or WLAN to either extend corporate telephony features and applications or deliver cost-related benefits through the integration of wired and wireless networks. Depending on the customer needs and requirements, an enterprise FMC solution can deliver one or more of the following capabilities: -Basic PBX mobility (or PBX-to-mobile extension) -Session redirection (or device handoff) -Single-number reach -Single voic access -Manual or automatic session continuity (or call handoff) -Mobile UC features (e.g. mobile and corporate presence/im, UM, conferencing, etc.) First-level PBX-to-mobile Extensions Frost & Sullivan defines First-level PBX-to-mobile extensions as basic FMC solutions that deliver capabilities such as single-number reach, simultaneous ring, single voic , and call-control features (e.g. call forward, do not disturb, call hold/resume, etc.) to the mobile device. For PBX-to-mobile extensions, all incoming calls are directed to and all outgoing calls originated from the PBX number. Usually seen as a first step towards an advanced FMC solution, and offered most commonly in its clientless service version, (to be activated within different telephony networks), basic PBX-to-mobile extensions do not usually require a full-blown premises-based FMC equipment, but the programming of the cell phone number into the PBX. 12
Market Definitions (Contd ) Advanced FMC Solutions Frost & Sullivan defines advanced FMC solutions as all fixed-mobile convergence solutions that were created to work with advanced smartphones to go beyond the typical touch-tone interface and the access number prefixing of a basic PBX-to-mobile extension. Due to the growing population of mobile workers and the increasing availability of smartphone brands, many enterprise telephony participants, including PBX vendors, independent FMC providers, smartphone vendors and even some carriers have started to develop advanced FMC solutions as the progression of their PBX-tomobile extension offerings. Typically, an advanced FMC solution requires a client application or a mobile user interface to deliver call control and PBX features (such as single-number reach, single voic , corporate directory access, etc), as well as other advanced features and capabilities such as mobile and corporate IM/presence, unified messaging, conferencing, and dual-mode voice call handoff (manual or automatic) between WLAN and cellular networks. The solutions usually consist of an advanced client software provisioned to the mobile device and a mobility network element such as a server/controller/router/appliance/gateway that connects the corporate platform with the mobile client. If the network element physically sits in the enterprise network and connects to the company s PBX, the solution is called a premises-based enterprise FMC solution. If, on the other hand, the appliance is located in the service provider network and FMC is offered as a network service, the solution becomes a hosted/network-based enterprise FMC solution. Finally, there are new versions of advanced FMC solutions that either offer native FMC support integrated within the phone user interface (e.g. BlackBerry) or use a thin client Web browser version of the client to access premises-based FMC component features from a mobile device. Although both types of solutions are part of the advanced premises-based FMC solutions space, these type of products do not require a downloaded client application on the smatphone. 13
Executive Summary The world enterprise FMC market has been growing at a steady double-digit pace, driven by continuous recognition of the technology s key benefits such as sizeable cost reduction, productivity gains, and ability to enhance collaboration across remote and mobile users. Frost & Sullivan estimates that, in 2010, the overall worldwide enterprise FMC market reached x.xx million FMC units shipped (counting only those installed or activated) a xx.x percent yearover-year growth. While this growth is significant, the actual growth levels were somewhat lower than what Frost & Sullivan had anticipated. This is mostly due to the latest shift of interest in the enterprise mobility arena. Emerging enterprise mobility trends and solutions such as collaborative applications, team spaces, social medial tools, and enterprise tablets with built-in mobility software clients distracted some attention of different enterprises and technology vendors away from the market for FMC solutions. However, this partial eclipse of enterprise FMC is expected to soon clear up as both enterprises and technology vendors acknowledge the ROI benefits and opportunities in delivering and deploying FMC solutions. In fact, Frost & Sullivan expects the compound annual growth rate of enterprise smartphone units shipped with an FMC solution to be around xx.x percent over the forecast time period. Enhanced premises-based and hosted FMC solutions that offer significant cost reduction capabilities as well as mobile UC features, including IM, presence, collaboration conferencing, etc., are expected to boost the sales of enterprise FMC solutions in coming years. After all, the majority of FMC product offerings are being constantly modified and enhanced to address new mobility needs and requirements. 14
Executive Summary (Contd ) In terms of advanced enterprise premises-based FMC solutions, on the other hand, software clients shipped in 2010 reached xxx, xxx, a xx.x percent year-over-year growth. Today, these types of clients make around xx.x percent out of the newly activated FMC solutions in 2010 a number that has considerably grown from previous years. Aggressive bundling strategies, clever pricing techniques and the increased penetration of smartphones in the enterprise space (as opposed to feature phones) have been some of the main drivers behind the growth of advanced premises-based FMC solutions as a percentage of total FMC solutions. In terms of CAGR, on the other hand, advanced enterprise premises-based FMC solutions are expected to enjoy potential growth of xx.x percent in terms of client units shipped and xx.x in terms of total revenue incurred, over the forecast period. Potential revenues of enterprise premises-based FMC solutions could, therefore, hit around x.xx Billion by Furthermore, and although not covered in this study, hosted FMC solutions are also expected to grow over time, due to carriers and other FMC vendors (including telephony vendors) pushing the concept of cloud services as another alternative of deploying enterprise FMC solutions. While hosted FMC shipment levels are still low in the enterprise space, Frost & Sullivan estimates hosted FMC clients to potentially reach around xx Million units shipped by Still, and even in 2016, the number of hosted FMC clients will be significantly lower than the number of premises-based FMC units shipped. Regardless of the type of solutions, Frost & Sullivan expects to see increasing adoption of enterprise FMC over the coming years. 15
