About Coaching What is coaching? The International Coach Federation (ICF) defines coaching as partnering with clients (people being coached) in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential. The role of the coach is to Facilitate the exploration of needs, motivations, desires, skills and thought processes to assist the client in making real, lasting change. Use questioning techniques to facilitate client's own thought processes in order to identify solutions and actions, rather than take a directive approach Support the client in setting appropriate goals and methods of assessing progress in relation to these goals Observe, listen and ask questions to understand the client's situation Encourage a commitment to action and the development of lasting personal growth & change. Maintain unconditional positive regard for the client, which means that the coach is at all times supportive and non-judgmental of the client, their views, lifestyle and aspirations. Evaluate the outcomes of the process, using objective measures wherever possible to ensure the relationship is successful and the client is achieving their goals. Why become a coach? A lot of people are attracted to coaching because they want to make a difference to others. Many people enter the coaching profession having been coached first, enjoying and benefiting from the experience, and feeling inspired to help others. Coaching, that way, is a very fulfilling and meaningful choice. Apart from that, the coaching profession allows flexible hours and work from anywhere in the world via phone or Skype. However, gaining the skills and tools to change the lives of others is only one reason individuals choose to attend a coach-training program. Becoming a coach is a transformative process of self discovery and personal growth. Our holistic coach training provides you with the skills to facilitate greater clarity, focus, direction and motivation in others. Naturally, these skills transfer right into your own life. That alone makes the investment worthwhile.
It s not uncommon for our participants to experience lasting changes as a result of their dropping their own self sabotaging patterns, learning and exploring who they are and what matters to them the most, and developing confidence in their own capacity to set and achieve their goals. Observing our coaches grow this way, is the most satisfying and rewarding part of our work. What do people do after graduation with their new skills? Most people who attend the program, want to add coaching to their portfolio of skills. They are leaders of organisations and this skill becomes vital in their roles. They are able to increase their influence in their organisation, develop successors and make a difference to others Some others set up a coaching business or increase their offerings /services to their clients. Coaching compliments any area of learning and development. It can be offered stand-alone or in combination with training and assessments. Coaching is relevant to people of all ages and backgrounds. Some people choose niche coaching areas such as student or adolescent coaching, coaching leaders in transition, career coaching etc. Some others choose to focus on specific industries. Some others use the coach training for just personal development. It is an enriching journey that allows us to maximise our potential and enrich our relationships. Can I earn enough as a coach? Executive Coaching is still in its infancy in India but is growing rapidly. A rough estimate suggests that the industry size in India is USD 60 million as against USD 5 billion in the US. Today, 95 percent of executive coaching in India is reported to be company sponsored while 5 percent is self-sponsored mainly by CEO/owners of small and medium size companies (SMEs) which are growing rapidly, changing their business models, or facing succession issues with next generation family members. However, the industry has not understood coaching fully. In India, people still look to functional experts and seniors as coaches, so younger coaches may find it difficult initially though they may be skilled at coaching. Fortunately, the understanding of coaching is increasing rapidly and new coaches can take advantage of this vast, untapped market to educate clients and create niches for themselves.
About ICF and the credential What is the ICF? ICF is a commonly used acronym for the International Coach Federation. Founded in 1995, the ICF's core purpose is to advance the art, science, and practice of professional coaching. As the leading global coaching association, the ICF is working toward this goal by setting high standards, providing independent certification, and building a worldwide network of credentialed coaches. The International Coach Federation (ICF) is the largest global association of coaches with over members. The ICF has been a leader in establishing both ethical standards and coaching competencies worldwide. For more information go to: What does the ICF credential mean? ICF is the most widely recognised credentialing body worldwide. It sets benchmarks for coaching that are valued across the globe. Many clients are more inclined to look for and take on credentialed coaches. The whole rigorous process of training and certification, allows you to become a skilled coach and allows the world to recognise your skills. What does an ICF approved program mean? Apart from credentialing individuals as coaches, ICF also accredits coach training programs. Navgati s Leaders Develop Leaders is an ICF approved program (ACSTH). ACSTH stands for Approved Coach Specific Training Hours. An ICF approved program means that the program Defines coaching as is defined by the ICF Teaches coaching competencies and the Code of Ethics as are defined by the ICF Meets the comprehensive and rigorous criteria set by the ICF, which is a benchmark of a high quality coaching program Completion of the training allows participants to meet the training requirements for individual applications as an Associate Certified Coach (ACC) or Professional Certified Coach (PCC) with the ICF.
If I graduate from the Navgati Coaching Certificate Program will I be an ICF credentialed coach? Not automatically. Graduating from Navgati s Leaders Develop Leaders is the first step. Upon completion of the program you will receive a Navgati certificate which can be submitted to the ICF should you decide to go on to apply for your ICF Credential through the Portfolio Track. The 10 hours of mentor coaching that you need can also be done with us Apart from the training what else do I need to do to get an ICF certification? Apart from a minimum of 60 hours of training, you need 100 hours of coaching with clients 10 hours of mentor coaching with a qualified coach (also included in the program fee) A recording of an actual coaching session that will be reviewed by an ICF examiner Can Navgati help me get clients? The primary initiative to find clients for you will be yours. However, Navgati can help you in many ways Give you a starter kit than can help you with introducing coaching to your clients Help you create an arrangement with an NGO to coach their staff. Refer clients who come to us looking for coaches What is the difference between training hours and coaching hours? Training hours are those spent in the classroom with the instructor practising coaching skills with fellow participants. While you may have several opportunities to practise coaching
during the training, they are not counted as coaching hours. Only hours of actual coaching with someone who has hired you as a coach and not in any other capacity will count toward your credential. How will the ICF know that I have completed 100 coaching hours? You need to keep a simple log of the coaching hours. Client name Contact information Dates of the coaching relationship Ravi Shankar Ravi.shankar@gmail.com Jan Dec Rahul Gandhi rahulgandhi@aol.com September 2012 Paid hours Pro-bono hours 12 4 At least 75 % of your coaching must be paid hours The 100 hours should be distributes across at least 8 different clients You must obtain the consent of those who are listed in your log An ICF representative may contact them to authenticate that they have been coached. No questions will be asked about the content of the coaching. That information is confidential
About ICF and the credential What is the structure of Leaders Develop Leaders? Leaders develop Leaders was designed with the vision of creating informed practitioners of professional coaching. It consists of 64 hours of in-person class spread over 4 months (2 days each month). Given the nature of coaching, face-to-face sessions allow people the opportunity for practise, reflection, sharing and feedback. Each class size is limited to 6-10 people providing ample opportunity for individualized attention. Apart from the 64 hours of in-person training, the program also includes 10 hours of mentor coaching. (One-on-one work with qualified coaches) What is the flexibility offered? The program is offered on two Fridays every month. So the fastest you can complete the program is 4 months. Batches are offered continuosly one after the other. If you miss a day in a batch, you could attend the same class in the next batch. So you could complete the course over 8 months, instead of four. We also recommend that you plan to get hours of coaching experience a month, so that you can apply for your credential within 8 months of your starting the program What makes the program unique? The biggest strength of this program is that it offers face-to-face coaching. Coaching as a skill is learn best by coaching, being a client and reflecting on the practise. This program is designed to maximise that. We work with real coaching conversations, not simulations. So each participant is a client as many times as he/she is a coach, actually experiencing the potency of coaching and experiencing growth. The coaching sessions are followed by coaching supervision, in which feedback is shared along the ICF competencies
Spaced learning that allows participants to practice and bring back their experience to the group for processing. The program is spaced out. It allows people to practce coaching between sessions and bring back their experiences to share and work through. It allows repeated reinforcement of the skills Our program draws heavily from the behavioural sciences and uses evidence-based theories What does Coaching Supervision mean? Coaches must also be able to manage their emotional responses to clients and explore the processes that happen within them. They must learn about themselves as instruments of change and explore their own blocks creating productive and fulfilling relationships with clients. A strength of Leaders develop Leaders, is that each coaching session is followed by supervision. Supervision is reflective practise along with the mentor coach that focuses on 1. Raising awareness of the coach s interventions 2. The conscious and unconscious interactions between the coach and the client 3. The internal processes that were triggered for the coach in relation to that client 4. Ethical and other boundaries (where relevant) When you say drawn from evidence based theories, what does that mean? This program expands the applicability of theory and methods derived from therapeutic experience into the realm of coaching. Coaching is different from therapy and counselling. Yet, there are powerful tools and processes in the therapy that can increase the potency of coaching, without deviating from the boundaries of coaching. The ability of coaches to deliver long-term outcomes for organizations and clients often is compromised by their lack of understanding of the complexity of human nature and the difficulties of change. This program provides an introduction to the nature and extent to which unconscious forces shape behavior for individuals. An increase in this knowledge can radically improve the ability of coaches to deal with patterns of emotions, thoughts, defenses, and conflicts experienced by clients. Models and frameworks used in the program are drawn from Transactional Analysis, Neuro Linguistic Programming and Appreciative Coaching This unique method offers the coach tools of transformation without delving into a therapeutic model or approach. The approach at this depth affords the client the holistic awareness necessary to move from being stuck to being successful.
What is mentor coaching? Mentor coaching involves a coach listening to you coaching ( a recording) or watching you coach and then sharing feedback with you. How many mentor coaching hours are included in the program fee? 10 mentor coaching hours are included in program fee. This meets the number of hours of mentor coaching that the ICF requires for the credential. Who should participate in the program? The trainees at Navgati come from a diverse range of backgrounds, life experiences and careers. The working experience of people ranges from years. People who want a personal attention, support and genuine learning will find this program perfect. People who are willing to introspect and share authentically in a group setting are those who will value and benefit from this program immensely. This is not for people who want the shortest route to certification. There are no quick fixes in the process. The community that is formed is very supportive one there is enough safety to practice the skill without being judged, plenty of opportunities for peer coaching, and coach referrals. Also, the multi level coaching group with newcomers and seniors provides a rich learning opportunity What if I do not want the ICF certification? Then you could Do the first two days only Do the first four days only Attend the labs on a regular basis
What is the program fee? The program fee is Rs /- plus service tax for corporate sponsored participants. This includes the 10 hours of mentor coaching. Discounts are available for self sponsored participants and those working in the development sector. They fee is payable in two instalments one before the start of the program and another on completion of 4 days of training.
